hi jamiekate,

there is a similair post here:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=5263
---------------------------------------
we will try what they did, running the rest of the fix, it may or may not work. you will need to download ewido also.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

A. Please download the trial version of Ewido anti-spyware 4.0 from here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

these are a earlier version directions, should be similiar:

* Install Ewido anti-spyware.
* When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.
* When you run Ewido for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok.
* The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button.
* The program will now go to the main screen.

You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.

* On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
* Click on Start.
* The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once finished updating, close Ewido.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates. Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.

B. Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

* If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
* Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
* Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
* Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
* Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
* Login on your usual account.

______________________________

C. Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
______________________________

D. Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:

* Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
* Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
* On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
* In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
* On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
* Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
* Click OK.

Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.
______________________________

E. Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.

* Click on Scanner
* Click on Settings
o Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
o Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
o Under What to scan select Scan every file
o Click on Ok
* Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
* Let the program scan the machine.

If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.

* Click Save Report button
* Save the report to your Desktop

Close Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.
______________________________

F. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
--------------------------------------------------------------------
also run spybot in normal mode and copy/paste the info about the zlob downloader from the report:

start spybot search and destroy:
* Close all browsers, check for problems and fix everything found in red
* Then on the toolbar menu select mode and switch to advanced mode, on the left lower down select tools, and view report, ensure all the options are selected near the bottom except:
* Uncheck[ ] do not report disabled or known legitimate Items.
* Uncheck[ ] Include a list of services in report.
* Now select (near the top) view report.
* Press export in the save in box, choose a place such as My Documents folder and save the report there.

Close Spybot-S&D

SETTINGS
HKEY_Local_Machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\wininet\dll.....regperf.exe

in your post you said "The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter"

I did not get the prompt to replace yet i do see the wininet.dll in my infected string..

what next?

hi jamiekate,

sorry for delay. thanks for the info.

are you still having the fake security/virus popup warnings that are the sure sign of smitfraud?

in any case lets try the smitfraud fix again, but first delete the other smitfraud folder and download it again. the reason to download again is that its occasionaly updated for new variations of the malware.

you can get it here:
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

just run the first option (search) afterwards a txt file opens with the result, save it somwhere and then post it in next reply.

hi jamiekate,

The funny thing is is that i am not having any troubles at all.
good. that last smitfraud log looks ok.

see if you can locate the file below on your computer, after you do this to show all files:

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok

>regperf.exe<
probably in the system32 dir, make a note of the dir its in, we will try to delete it later.

also try a online scan or two at one of these websites, reboot computer once and rescan and post a new hjt log.....shelf life

hi jamiekate,

i know how it goes, no problem. iam at a lose to explain spybot flagging that item.
let try this, you downloaded and scanned with smitfraud.log looked ok. this time boot computer into safe mode, tap the f8 key during restart, chose first option safe mode.

open the smitfraud folder, click the smitfraudfix.cmd and start with option 2 (clean) when asked to clean the regisrty select y (yes)

-----------------------------------
reboot normally, check for any updates to spybot, run spybot to see if reg item is gone. (cross fingers) also since its been awhile would you rescan and post a new hjt log for me.

my disk clean up never works...it just sits there.
nope the zlob.downloader is still there and it can't be fixed, it just asks to run on my next restart. in my recovery part i see the zlob downloader and the files underneath say this.

hkey\local maching\software\microsoft\windows\current version\policies\explorer\run\wininet.dll

i also did a search on the regperf.exe again and still nothing.

hi jamiekate,

sorry for delay. well that didnt work. its apparent this is just a harmless registry leftover that SBSD keeps flagging.
its possible that sbsd cant remove this with sunbelts counterspy real time protection running, its a long shot since sbsd does it at reboot, before any real-time protection would load i would think. might as well try it.

1. Right-click the running icon of CounterSpy in the sytem tray.
2. With your mouse, hover over Active Protection Status (This should be enabled).
3. A menu will slide out and then you need to right click on "Disable Active Protection".

next run a updated SBSD and let it do its thing.

you might also want to try this removal tool for zlob varients, maybe it will clean up that registry entry. i cant speak for this removal tool, normally i like to run tools on my own malware infested box before asking others but i just reformatted to start fresh. up to you.

-----------------------------------------------
can you run disk clean like this:
start>run>cleanmgr
might also download/use atf cleaner:
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/

you should at some point also visit windows update to get any critical patches/updates to your OS.

hi jamiekate,

I cant use my Counterspy anymore, the trial expired

ok, then it wasnt running when sbsd ran? did you try the link to the zlob removal tool?
this seems to be a harmless registry leftover, you dont have the smitfraud trojan anymore. you can right click on the entry after sbsd flags it and exclude it from future scans
did you get atf cleaner?

hi jamiekate,

that item SBSD flags is just a harmless leftover, why it didnt clean up i dont really know. if you still had "it" you would know. i think your good to go. cookies are pretty much harmless, but you can set Firefox to dump cookies after closing.

with firefox open:
tools>options>privacy tab>cookies> check "allow sites to set cookies"
"for the originating site only" keep cookies "unitl i close Ffox" more options under settings tab.

hi jamiekate,

I wanted to say thank you to you and tashi for helping and not giving up on me

glad to help.

Be careful of what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with extra software. You may be installing more than you think. Learn more about the program, Does it come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? If you search hard enough you can always find a "clean" alternative to any software. Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is. DO YOU TRUST THE SOURCE? Check this database:Spyware Guide (http://www.spywareguide.com/) or this: Library (http://research.sunbelt-software.com/Browse_Library.cfm)before installing free/shareware.

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp)
occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs.

Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more:
Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/security/settings.mspx)
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer, you dont have to use it. Try a different browser. You can have and use more than one browser on your computer.
Like Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/),

Install a Firewall:A firewall will help to control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. XP firewall dosnt block outbound traffic. Its important to know/learn what routinely needs a internet connection.
Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=dbtopnav_zass)
OutPost Lite (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
Jetico Personal Firewall (http://www.jetico.com/index.htm#/jpfirewall.htm)
Look n Stop (http://www.looknstop.com/En/index2.htm)

Outlook Express with the default settings is not secure. It will run scripts, download images etc, just like a browser. You dont have to use it. Windows SP1/SP2 updates have made big improvments to Outlook. Another reason to stay updated.
look here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/web/sp2_oe.mspx)
and here (http://www.tames.net/security/oesettings.htm)
Or try Pegasus Mail, safer by default,no tweaking needed. (http://www.pmail.com/)

Make sure you have and keep updated Antivirus software
Free for home users:
avast! 4 Home Edition Download (http://www.avast.com/eng/free_virus_protectio.html)
AVG free version 7.0 (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/)
AntiVir Personal Edition (http://www.free-av.com/)
Clam Win (http://www.Clamwin.com/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/)

Download one or two of these, install and update before using:(if these are constantly finding malware, then you need to make changes to your browser and or your habits)
CounterSpy (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/)Free trial version
Spybot Search and destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)
Ad-Aware SE Personal edition (http://www.lavasoft.de/)
Microsoft Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx)
Becarful with spyware "removers and scanners"-- there are many "rogue/suspect" (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm) programs that "claim to remove" spyware.Check here first.

AntiTrojan software to fill in the gap:
a2 free (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/)
Ewido Anti-Spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/)
Trojan Hunter (http://www.misec.net/)
Tauscan trial version (http://www.agnitum.com/products/tauscan/)

Other programs to consider:
Process Guard (http://www.diamondcs.com.au/processguard/) stop events/processes with user intervention
SpywareBlaster (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=49) add security to IE
IE-SPYAD (https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD) adds adware peddlers sites/domains to IE restricted zone
ATF cleaner (W2K,XP only) (http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/) cleans out temp files, history, autoforms etc

hi jamiekate,

i have a dvd rw drive that is not giving me the option to format my disks?

format? do you mean burn (audio/video files) to a blank DVD or CD ?

you can look in device manager:
right click on my computer, select properties, hardware tab, device manager, click the + sign next to CD/DVD ROM, see if your drive is listed and that its not flagged with a exclamation mark.

No exclamation mark next to my dvd-rw drive.I can burn dvd's just fine but when i do a dvd rw it is giving me a error message. I have been formatting them on my sony dvd recorder. It says

I/O Error

device [1:0:0] plextor dvdr px 750a 1.02(e:) (ata)
interpretation:check conditon
cdb:2a00 00 00 00 00 00 00 20 00
interpretation: write 10 -sectors:0-31
sense area:70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0a 00 00 00 00 30 05 00 00 00 00
interpretations:cannot write medium-incompatible format.

Now when i format them on dvd recorder it will burn just fine, and my dvd -r's burn fine too.
This burner is new,just replaced.

thanks
