View Full Version : PC turning itself off and not rebooting

For several months now my computer has just randomly been turning itself off and then not rebooting properly afterwards. It goes off totally and then when I press the on/off button on the hard drive box platform thing [whatever you call it LOL] it then never seems to turn on straight away. It takes loads of attempts of pressing the button before you actually manage to get the computer on and working again. After it's back on and the desktop loads an error message shows up saying the system has recovered from a serious error. The computer also strangely seems to shut off [well the monitor goes black anyway] when I plug in my memory stick, digital camera and MP3 player. I dunno what on earth could be causing all this myself, so I thought I'd ask here as I dunno if it could be a virus that's being undetected by my AntiVir or something? AntiVir hasn't found anything for ages, since the last time I posted about a problem on here actually, a couple of months ago. Spybot and Adaware's scans don't find anything these days and Ewido only manages to find tracking cookies, so I'm very clueless.

hi em1500uk,

i have good news and bad news.

the good news:
you say your antivirus hasnt found anything. good, thats not to say its couldnt be malware related as some malware can be poorly coded.

the bad news:
computer "shutdowns" could be hardware related, a over heating cpu, a failing power supply or some component in your computer.

to rule out a malware issue, see this thread. item #4 about posting a HJT log:
