View Full Version : hijaked browser and TrojanHorseGeneric17 - Nothing will clean it
Hi All,
I have a problem similar to this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=56536) and will include info below.
My browser is hijacked, going to random sites when I perform a search and click any of the links. My AVG antivirus keeps popping up "TrojanHorseGeneric17" with a number of different extensions.
While checking the computer TEMP files, I actually watched as one popped into the diectory, and the AVG popped a warning. It seems to hapen every 15 mins or so.
I keep the comuter very clean as this forum helped me fix a nasty bug about 18 months ago... and I have not had a problem since.
Currently, I have run MBAM, SpyBot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and also rootalyzer... They have all found problems, and I attempted to clean them...but the issue still remains.
The only thing I have not done at this point is to run Combo-Fix as was needed in my last repair.
So... After that long explaination, here is my HJT Log:
(I see a possible problem at:

Hi,
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

This copies log to clipboard
Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Here are the first two files. I am having trouble with GMER... something happens to hog all CPU usage. It crashed my computer twice, I was able to get it to complete... but then was unable to open notepad to paste the file, as there were no available resources left.
I am restarting the computer again, and will attempt another try.
Here are DDS.txt & attach.txt:

Hi,
after running ComboFix, there was a new IE icon on the desktop. Just FYI. Is this normal?
Yes, that's normal.
Could you run GMER now having files option disabled again? If it doesn't work try in safe mode.
Below is the new log. If we need to Run GMER again, is there another tool that can get you the same info? It runs horribly on my machine... takes multiple tries. I was able to run it in safe mode... BUT due to native resolution, I was not able to get to the copy button to save the file. I had to run again in normal mode... it usually takes several tries to get a result as the computer keeps locking up.

Bed time... back in 6-7 hours!
Since running to items you requested I have not tried to search google or any engine that was resulting in the redirect/hijacked issue.
Should I try and see what happens? EEEhhhh, no.... I will wait for your response!
Hi again,
Click start->run->type cmd.exe and press enter. Command window opens up.
Copy paste code box contents below into command window:
copy %systemroot%\system32\drivers\intelppm.sys %systemroot%
echo copy intelppm.sys system32\drivers>%systemroot%\fix.bat
echo del intelppm.sys>>%systemroot%\fix.bat
exit
cls
Print following instructions since you won't be able to access them in recovery console.
1. Restart your computer
2. Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start
3. Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4. You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press enter.
5. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:
batch fix.bat
6. At the next prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:
exit
Windows will now begin loading. Run GMER (uncheck files) and post back the report.
I followed your instructions.
Pasted the box contents into the command window and restarted the computer.
BUT... it did NOT allow me to choose an OS, it went into windows, apparently without networking support. (it did flash a fast blank black screen prior to starting windows)
I again entered the comments... it asked if I wanted to overwrite the files... I selected ALL then restarted hoping it would give me the revovery console option... it did not.
It just starts in normal windows mode.
Hi,
When you reboot system it should show menu with these options for 2 seconds:
Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Try to press up and down arrow keys right after reboot to make that menu stay on screen. If you don't do that it runs normal Windows installation by default.
Nope... arrow keys takes me to a primary computer setup area... bios info, drive boot sequence, advanced menu's etc.
I saw a flash on screen F11 for recovery console... when I rebooted and tried that, it went to a default Gateway recovery mode to select partial repair or full hard disk format.
Don't want to do that! Any suggestions?
Hi,
Before Windows loads, press F8 to enter boot menu. From there choose "return to os choices menu". Then you should be able to select recovery console.
OK... Got in. Ran command. Windows is now starting. I'll post results when complete.

Hi,
Please install update 9.3.2 for Adobe reader here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows).
Click start->run->copy paste following command into text box:
mbr -t
Post back log that gets created.
Didn't see a log created, but here was cmd screen output:

Sorry, forgot to add log creating directive to that command. Anyway, results looks good. Please see if browsing works properly now.
If no issues, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.
THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK
Please download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.
Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Run Secunia vulnerability check here (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) and fix its findings.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html) or Comodo Firewall Pro (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html#fw3.0) (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation Install Comodo HopSurf.., Make Comodo my default search provider and Make Comodo Search my homepage and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade
It seems the browser issue is corrected!
I'm off to work now... but in about 9 hrs, I'll be home and be able to complete the remaining steps.
I'll post back when completed!
Ok. Shall wait for your reply :)
Thank you for all the help Blade! :thanks:
I completed all the steps (But chose not to use a hosts file). Most of them had already been set/completed as after getting virtumonde on a computer about 18 months ago, I keep pretty much everything locked down and up to date/secure. I'll keep my eye on Java & items like the reader as well.
Since I don't download anything, and the only thing I had installed was iTunes... I suspect this issue came from a visited website when I was researching music.
The computer showed no symtoms of infection except the browser redirect, I was surprised that AVG didn't pick anything up, AND how the different anti malware programs found things. (Hence the reason for multiple programs/scanners)
Based on all the similar threads I'm seeing here and on bleepingcomputer.com I assume it is spreading and/or getting more momentum. Hopefully, the malware guys can find a way to stop it, get this issue fixed quickly. SO more people don't need to come here and get assistance!
Thank you again for the help.
I noticed after running a couple repair steps I have a couple taskbar icons that don't load on startup... this is evidently due to repair of registry keys. Do you have any suggestions on getting them back?
(I did find a couple resolutions online, but thought I'd ask you before attempting anything!) :police:
Hi,
I have a couple taskbar icons that don't load on startup
What are those icons?
It looks like it's just the AVG. Others appear to be OK.
Please reinstall AVG and see if it fixes the problem. It's possible infection harmed its components.
I'll do that in the AM, and post back if it takes care of it.
OK... all set. I did a uninstall from control panel, including removing user settings, virusvault, etc. then a complete fresh re-install.
Icon is back on restart.
Computer seems to be working great, no browser issues, or anything unusual.
Thanks again! :thanks:
