View Full Version : CPU running at 100%

Hi
I have had multiple problems: CPU running at 100% all the time, Not able to download any spy ware programs or other Microsoft products/help etc, Java problems etc. I had to uninstall Spybot at one point to get the computer to at least run in safe mode
I disabled Windows Update in msconfig eventually, which has given me some measure of normality (hence this thread while I have the chance)
I still have multiple problems although they seem to be mainly to do with Microsoft/Windows tools and accessories and HP Security stuff (I have a HP Compaq 6720s) ... and in some areas my computer has never run better! ???

Any help will be MOST appreciated !

My HJT Log is below:

Hello simta

Welcome to Safer Networking.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen. It is advisable that you back up your important data before starting any clean up procedure. Neither Safer Networking Forums nor the Analyst providing the advice may be held responsible for any loss.

HJT log looks fine, lets run this scan

Download OTL (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe) to your desktop.
Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start
eventlog.dll
scecli.dll
netlogon.dll
cngaudit.dll

%systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav

Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

Good Morning,

Your opening statement is a bit confusing, you stated that your cpu is running at 100% all the time but then said in some aspects its running real well.

Sometimes malware will play havoc with a system and sometimes its just a couple of programs conflicting.

What exactly are you experiencing now ?

Hi Ken

Current Status
Sorry about the confusion... From Start Up (loads normally or even faster) my computer and CPU appears to be operating normally (or even faster than normal) when I am using programs I use a lot. eg Firefox, Thunderbird, Open Office, and also programs I use less frequently. The problem arises when I use for example: Windows Disk Cleaner, Defragmenter, Anything to do with Windows Security / HP Defender Windows Update , Spybot S&D AVG SpywareBlaster etc. These programs seem to do a variety of things but the one thing they all have in common is that at some point during their use, usually when loading or shortly into their operation they send they CPU to 100% and it seems to lock the CPU there. The only way I have been able to "free" up the CPU has been to re-boot otherwise it stays at 100% and slows qperation to a slow crawl if at all and the whole system appears very unstable.

Initial Status ... (The CPU would run at 100% from initial start up ie pushing the start button)

The only way I could get the computer to operate in this fashion(paragraph above) was when I disabled Windows Update in msconfig. If I had not done that the then I would not have been able to access this Forum for example. The computer was almost unusable ... even in safe mode ... which I could only access after uninstalling Spybot S&D which then gave me the ability to access msconfig in safe mode. (It took me many hours to get the computer to this point [re 1st paragraph]) ...

Hopefully the above has made the picture a bit clearer ! ...but if it's still as "clear as mud" then please advise

Latest after running Mbytes scan

I tried to reconnect Account User Control and use Disc Cleaner to see if anything had improved ... They both sent the CPU to 100% and locked it there so the problem remains !

Thanks HEAPS for this help ...I am appreciating it enormously !

Lets check for a rootkit.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip). Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double click GMER.exe.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/gmer_zip.gif
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED ...
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)
http://www.geekstogo.com/misc/guide_icons/GMER_thumb.jpg (http://www.geekstogo.com/misc/guide_icons/GMER_instructions.jpg)
Click the image to enlarge it

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
Save the log where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
Please copy and paste the report into your Post.

Well !!! ... It didn't like that !

I followed instructions and ran GMER scan ... After 10-15 minutes into scan it had a blue screen moment and rebooted the computer ... Upon restart a windows dialog box appeared stating unexpected shut-down (the details I have posted below) ... I tried again to run GMER scan ...this time though it froze the computer when I clicked the scan button to start scan resulting in me having to crash the computer with the OFF button... On both occasions prior to the event happening I noticed that the CPU had done the usual running at 100% (I have a CPU meter on Sidebar)
After restart from second crash no dialog box appeared...

I thought it wise to post here before doing anything else

Details from Dialog Box

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.

The application window will appear
Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
Click Yes to continue
A 'Finished!' message will appear
Click OK
DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK

IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.

The application window will appear
Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
Click Yes to continue
A 'Finished!' message will appear

Not much luck !

I have now spent two nights trying to get something happening ... I have followed instructions re Defogger etc (nothing came up on screen to post) ... GMER sought of runs but at different points into the scan it stops with an error message like GMER has stopped working or it just freezes the whole lot and I have to crash the computer ...CPU always runs at 100% while trying to scan

This happens either in normal or safe mode.

The only thing I have been able to save is posted below ... I suspect there should be lots more in the log ???

I haven't tried the other root kit yet ... I'm too tired !

I will try Root Repeal tomorrow night ...

Can / Should I re-enable CD drivers yet ?

Thanks for you help ...

Yes go ahead and re enable your CD drivers.

Then do this

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_FF.gif

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC2-1.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Not having much luck ! ...in fact getting worse !

I followed instructions re Combo Fix ... I Tried to disable AVG as per Bleeding Computers but when I tried to disable SMTP (had 2 entries ???) it would not let me disable them ... so I disabled everything I could re AVG in msconfig and tried to run Combo ...it stopped with message that AVG was NOT disabled and to continue was at my risk ! ... So I uninstalled AVG ... and tried to run Combo after a re-boot ... It never got past scaning files ...I let it run for 1 hour and then crashed computer as nothing was happening ... I then re-booted in safe mode and tried again ... It ran until it had completed 50 tasks ... When that occured a windows dialog box appeared (PEV.exe had stopped working) ... It then briefly continued and started to delete 3 files and about 4 folders (3 of which seemed to be Recycle Bins) ... At that point it gave up the ghost and stopped working (left running for 1 hour) ... I crashed computer again and re-booted in normal mode so I could reply to you ... I have noticed that since I downloaded Combo the CPU runs at 100% ALL THE TIME in normal mode ...something which it had not done since I had disabled Windows Update in msconfig ... even though Win Update is still disabled in msconfig ...so effectively the problem is now WORSE !

I have 2 HJT Logs ... One prior to running Combo in SAFE MODE and one done just before replying to you in NORMAL MODE ... I will paste the latest one ... if you need the other one please let me know.

As I now have an almost unprotected computer is it safe to be on.line ? ...All I am running is Windows Firewall ...please advise

Cheers (but getting worried !)

HJT after running Combo

Further to my previous post

I have disabled Windows Error Reporting Service in msconfig using the same halving methord I used to disable Windows Update to "free" up the CPU again ... so we are back to where we were before using ComboFix ... except that I now have 2 services disabled in msconfig ... If I didn't do that then the computer slows to a crawl and very unstable ...so at least my computer is now usable again ...

Awaiting further instructions ...

Good Morning,

First thing is to reinstall your AV, when its installed you just need to disable it and then run CF even if it says it not disabled.

pev is part of CF, what I need you to do is to drag CF to the trash and download a fresh copy as its updated on a regular basis and then try running CF again

To be on the safeside, lets have these checked

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html)

Go to VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com/) and submit these files for analysis, just use the BROWSE feature and then Send File , you will get a report back, post the report into this thread for me to see.

c:\windows\System32\drivers\asyncmac.sys
c:\windows\System32\drivers\beep.sys

If the site is busy you can try this one

Good Morning,

Those files look ok. What are you experiencing to say that you don't think things are right ?

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) or from Here. (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
This will start the program and scan your system.
The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.

Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

Hi Ken

I'll reply before running online scan ...

I gradually enabled the things I had disabled re windows defender, account user control, Windows accessories etc and rebooting after each change ... Everything was going great and still is (meaning they are all still enabled) except when it came to enabling Windows Update and Windows Reporting Service which I left till last.

I noticed in msconfig prior to enabling WUpD and WRS that it said WUpD was running even though the box did not have a tick.
Anyway I thought I would give WUpD a try and it almost worked ...It downloaded 11 updates and installed 3 but would not install any more. I thought maybe that the tick in the msconfig box wasthe problem and it was waiting for me to enable it so after another re-boot I enabled both WUpD and WRS and changed to Normal Startup in msconfig thinking all was fixed

... This was not the case ! ... The same problem occured CPU running at 100%...
So i disabled both again (albeit one at time in case it was only one of them) Anyhow it proved to be both ... So the end result is that I have gained some functionality back, but basically the problem remains ...

It was looking so good !... I thought you had it beaten ! ...so I'm disappointed !

I'll run scan from your last post while waiting for a reply ... This is bloody frustrating !...

Cheers

PS Hope you can follow the above as it's way past my bedtime! ...

Try running this one

Please run this free online virus scanner from ESET (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)

Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is ticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Hi Ken

I tried to run ESET in IE but it keep coming up with an error ... Saying that a dll file was missing .... so I ran it instead in Firefox ... it seemed to download a plug-in ... any how it ran for several hours ... and at the end come up with Zero problems and did not supply a report (maybe because it found no faults)

My computer runs like normal and I am wondering if it's possible we have disabled the effects of what ever is causing my problem/s and as long as I leave windows update and the win error reporting service disabled in msconfig then all wii be good .... I am looking at replacing my laptop in about 6 mths or so

... So is above a possible remedy albeit not "perfect" ?

ken545
2010-04-29, 10:39
Well, I don't think I would disable windows updates as there needed to secure your computer.

C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt <--Have you tried looking here

Hi Ken

Looked for the txt file at that location and did not find there or anywhere else ...

One thing I have noticed since re-enabling Windows Disk Cleanup and have used three times since is that it seems to have large amounts in win error reporting dump files to clean up ... anywhere from 4.5GB to 450MB. Is that normal ? or would it be just because I had the service disabled ?

I'm still willing to give any ideas a try ! .... I just don't want to take up more than my share of this forum !

Cheers

Good Morning,

It looks like you had Symantec installed at one time, wondering if its not completely uninstalled.

Try running this removal tool, it will get rid of all symantec

Hi Ken

EUREKA !!! ... Problem solved !!!

I ran the Norton cleaner and it cleaned out heaps by the time it took (I actually un-installed Norton as the VERY first thing on my very first boot up of my then new computer. I had found Norton impossible to remove (fully) in the past, especially if it had been used.

Anyhow, It gave me an idea to try and somehow re-install Windows Update as it may help my problem ... I found a Microsoft page after a bit of searching and came across the following couple of pages (below) with what proved to be the solution to my problem ... I used "AGRESSIVE" Mode

... My Computer is back to "NORMAL" !!! ...

1st Link

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&tid=1f59343c-343b-45dc-948b-9b76e25662ce&cat=&lang=&cr=&sloc=&p=1

excerpt from page "run MicrosoftFixit50202.msi and choose the
Aggressive mode. The system *must* be connected to the internet when the
Aggressive mode is chosen so ensure that the native XP firewall is On.
The required updating components will be downloaded and installed.
Restart the system once the Fixit has finished it's operation."

2nd Link : MS Fixit Tool 50202.msi

... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058#FixItForMeAlways

.... So, Thanks for all your time and assistance ... It's been a very frustrating experience for both, I feel !
... Just goes to show perseverance pays off !

... Believe it or not, I was going to chuck the towel in after my next post and just put up with the way it was running until the next "thing" got to the computer ... ... ... ... then I was going to SHOOT IT !!!

Thanks again and again

Have a "BONSA" Day (Aus slang) ... I will be !

simta
2010-05-03, 17:00
Opps !

When using Fixit Tool ... I used Install not Repair when you get to that bit !

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
