Hi, I hope someone can help me.

Two years ago I received great help here for infections/virus/trojans, lots of bad stuff. This same laptop has been running great since then until about Thursday 4/8/2010.

All of a sudden, I cannot get to some web sites, such as “cnn.com” while other web sites work fine (like Spybot). When I do a search in google, I get the usual goggle results, so I am not actually redirected. The web sites that won’t work just never finish loading the page. Sometimes the page shows “server taking too long to answer…”

In case this is related -- I had been having problems with my mobile broadband about the same time, not realizing there may be a browser/trojan problem, so I uninstalled & reinstalled VZAccessManager (Verizon’s boardband). I also uninstalled a program called “Fax Talk” that was installed when I updated drivers on my multifunction machine.

Just in case, too -I think the day or two before this web problem started, I was watching videos on youtube, yogajournal, and southpark, and I cant remember which, but one of them requested update the media player or plugin.

I am using Firefox, and when I researched the problem about some websites not loading on their help area, it showed “vundo trojan” could be the cause. My Norton A-V expired, and I've had a problem removing it and installing McAfee in the past few months, so I just used online scans for now. Today I tried to download both avast and avira but I keep getting the "page taking too long..." error (The server at software-files-l.cnet.com is taking too long to respond.) I cant buy AV right now because $ is very low.

Here's what I did so far, hope to find help again.

I backed up my registry with ERUNT.
I ran HijackThis and log will be with this post at the bottom.

I ran the following after updating databases
Spybot - found nothing
Super Antispyware - found 8 adware cookies, which I had it quarantine
MalwareBytes - found nothing

Ran the online Kaspersky scanner, and it only found “threat hoax.win32.agent.fp in my copies of “The Avenger” program that I used two years ago (Spybot volunteer requested). I should probably delete that program & files? Kaspersky results will be with this post.
I had to use IE for Kaspersky, because Firefox just would not work with it.
When I did use IE, Windows Defender showed "a change was made to c:\Program Files\Adobe\Actobat 7.0 AcroIEFavClient.dll." No idea what that is.

Ran the online ESET scanner, and it found “win32/Adware.Virtumonde.Neo application" in 7 files. All 7 of these files were dated/created/modified two years ago, so i don't really think they are the problem. The results will be with this post.

Just now downloaded and ran DSS, and those two logs will be pasted here also, in case they are needed.

Last thing - looking at my C drive I found this file in C:\Windows\Temp\

D653F3EC.TMP 4/7/2010 1:25am

I have no idea what that file is, and it is right before I started having problems.

Assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!!

Hi,

Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab, uncheck files option and then click scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply. Post fresh dds logs too.

Hi,

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Hi,
Two years ago ComboFix would not run even in safe mode on this Vista laptop.
I'll go download the file, read the tutorial & see if it will work this time around.
Thanks.

Unfortunately, combofix would not run - safe/normal modes. I see the registry files being copied, but then the blue combofix screen sits at this spot:

Please wait.
ComboFix is preparing to run.
Attempting to create a new System Restore Point.

Thanks.

Hi,

Did you disable your protection software (McAfee and other protection) first?

taichi
2010-04-18, 20:47
Yes. I disabled everything that was running.
Thank you.

Hi again,

1. Place fresh copy of renamed ComboFix file (taichi.exe) from your desktop to root of C: drive (C:\). That way we can access it on every account.

2. Try running ComboFix thru in safe mode with command prompt. Here are steps to follow (print/save these since you won't be able to access them while in safe mode):
Press F8 before Windows' loading screen and select safe mode with command prompt -option.
Then type the following commands (I assume you moved taichi.exe to C: root):
cd\
taichi.exe

When ComboFix reboots select safe mode with command prompt again so that ComboFix will finish there.

Hello,
I will try these instructions after work today (Monday), so it will be late or tomorrow before I can reply. Just to be clear, do I need to download a *new* copy of ComboFix, then rename it, or can I just use rename the one I downloaded yesterday?
Thank you.

You may use either one.

Hi,
You've been very patient. I wanted to let you know it may be a couple of days before I post results because I'm sick. Please keep the thread open to fix things, if possible.
Thanks.
