Every few days, I keep getting problems from the recent Windows XP Security 2010 malware. Malwarebyte's Anti-malware and Spybot keeps killing it, but it comes back every now and then. Could someone check this log for me and help me out?

Thanks for your help. Just in case it might help you, when combofix restarted my computer, I got a small "RunDLL" error for a file that was deleted. I couldn't write down the specifics in time.

I don't think Combofix fully solved the problem, because Spybot keeps finding these 2 things (it was finding it when the popups first arrived).
http://www.screenshotdumpster.com/img/m7Gbd58636/MWSnap142.jpg
Note: I know the screencap says 3 problems, but the last one was just a cookie.
Those are no threats, they are user-defined settings in most cases.
Have you set Security Center not to notify about antivirus and firewall?

I don't think so... maybe I did a while back.
Any way, the computer ALMOST seems to be back to normal (no more fake security popups). However, I sometimes get redirected when clicking a link from search engines. It's rare, but it has happened a few times.
Any other suggestions?

UPDATE:
Well, the XP Security malware hit me again this morning. So, what's our next step? Hopefully we can get rid of this quickly. It's towards the end of the semester in college and I've got some research papers coming up... :hair:

Sorry to triple-post now, but I HAD to scan with MBAM before it affected it more like last time. Here's the log if it helps.

Are you able to keep infected completely offline and transfer tools/log via usb stick?

Are you able to keep infected completely offline and transfer tools/log via usb stick?
Yes, I can transfer tools and logs with a USB stick.
As for taking the infected laptop completely offline, do you have any specific steps on how to temporarily disable wireless networking? Isn't there a way to boot in safe mode without internet?
I always try to reply within 24 hrs.
Safe mode is usually enough but you should be able to disable it from setting as well.
Please download latest version of combofix to usb stick, transfer it to infected computer, run it in safe mode and post back logs.
Leepo136
2010-04-18, 22:23
Well, it did something different this time. It said it detected rootkit activity and that it needed to reboot. However, it didn't reboot back into safe mode. Should I have forced it to reboot in safe mode again after it restarted?
Leepo136
2010-04-18, 22:45
Yeah, tell me if you want me to run combofix again. As you can see from the log, McAfee and firewall was enabled and it popped up a few times asking me if I wanted to allow registry changes for Internet Explorer. I allowed it each time.
Plus, again, it didn't reboot back into safe mode like I had intended. Here's the log though.

Please run another mbam scan in safe mode.

A couple of questions...
1. What line in the logs indicated to you that the second combofix run fixed it? Was it " c:\windows\system32\drivers\pciide.sys "?
2. Safe mode appears large and clunky on my laptop. For example, I could barely click the "start scan" button in MBAM because the window was so large. Resizing the window barely helped. Any suggestions?
3. MBAM took nearly twice as long to run the quick scan in safe mode. Is that normal?
Here's the log...

What is going on?!?!
Did you use it meanwhile in normal mode?
It is completely natural that it came back if there is a downloader. That's why it needs to kept offline and in safe mode until it is cleaned.
Leepo136
2010-04-19, 15:16
Yes, I did use it in normal mode afterwards. I guess I should just keep it in safe mode until we have gotten rid of it all.
So what's our next step?
Yes you should :)
Download to the desktop: Dr.Web CureIt (ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe)
Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

I'm currently scanning with that tool in safe mode, and it seemed to be going fine. But then, the scan slowed to a mere crawl when it got to the drivers. It's still scanning, but it's going very slow. Shouldn't it be a "quick" scan at first?
Leepo136
2010-04-20, 07:20
Update:
The program locks up when it starts scanning the drivers. Could this indicate faulty or infected drivers? Personally, I think it has something to do with running it in safe mode, because other scans (like mbam) go twice as slow when I'm in safe mode.
Anyway, after trying it a second time, it tried to lock up again when it reached the drivers, but I manually stopped the scan. I could then follow the rest of your instructions (run full scan on all drives, save logs, etc.). However, it was late, so I'll run the scans in the morning.
It may be worth noting that the quick scan did find a "backdoor" virus or something. Hopefully it was the darn downloader you mentioned.....
It could be yes.
Do you have any details about that backdoor?
Leepo136
2010-04-20, 22:52
Well, the FULL scan has been going all day. Since it's scanning every file on my drives, I expected as much. The full scan is running smoothly though, and it's about 3/4 of the way done.
As for the backdoor, it was found again during the quickscan (before I stopped it from getting to the drivers). Here's the listed info.
Object: Process in memory: C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE:840
Status: BackDoor.Tdss.565
Action: Eradicated
Everything is still being done in Safe Mode. The laptop has not been connected to the internet or any other network for the past two days.
Leepo136
2010-04-21, 01:09
Big sigh.....
It got to the very end of the full scan, and it's trying to scan the drivers again. Again, when scanning those drivers, it scans very slowly. I could leave it on all night and let it finish scanning, especially since it decided to find all of the quarantined files from other anti-malware/spyware programs.
Leepo136
2010-04-21, 18:44
Well, I left the scan running overnight, and it was still scanning the drivers at a slow rate. I then manually stopped the scan. A whole list of infections is shown, but most of them were from quarantine folders in Spybot and MBAM.
Here's my problem though. I don't see any of those buttons that you listed in the instructions. I do have 5 buttons on the bottom: Select All, Cure, Rename, Move, Delete. Cure, Rename, Move, and Delete only become available after I click Select All.
After clicking Select All, what should I do? Should I move them or delete them? I'm just leaving the program open until I see your answer.
Lastly, here are the logs you requested.

Attached is the Dr. Web log. It was messy when I tried to copy/paste it.
Looks like most of those were already inactive.
Those can't be cured so delete is the option.
Let's see this next:
Locate if present the following file & delete it:
C:\windows\ntbtlog.txt
Restart the computer
Just before the OS loading screen starts hit F8 as if going to safe mode.
From the advanced boot menu choose "enable boot logging" then hit enter.
Post the following file:

I couldn't enable boot logging AND run it in safe mode, so it ran in normal mode. I quickly copied the ntbtlog to my flash drive and turned it off. I didn't want the downloader to re-download the malware...
Here's the log.

Should I run this in normal mode or safe mode with networking? I can't run an online scan without... well, an internet connection.

I deleted those files and folders as instructed. I won't be able to use the laptop for most of the day, but I will update you on its performance tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help! :bigthumb:
No hurry, take your time :)

Well, no signs of that malware so far. However, I did have a weird occurrence. A window popped up asking me if I wanted to debug an error that happened to svchost.exe. I simply closed it, and my display settings went a little crazy for a second (title text of windows was a bit different). I then went to change them back, but it corrected itself.
Before that happened, I did notice that one entry of svchost.exe in the processes list was temporarily taking up about 25% of the CPU.
Other than those two things, it has been relatively "normal."

I haven't used the laptop since. I will be able to use it tonight, and I will update you again soon.
Thanks for hanging in there with me... :)

Has that re-occurred?
Shortly after turning on the system today, it DID re-occur. I also ended an svchost.exe process because it was using up 50% of the CPU. My display settings changed for a second, and when I went to change them back, it corrected itself (like last time).
What I don't understand is why all of a sudden a svchost process is taking up 50% every time I boot up.

It's also worth noting that when I was first using safe mode (when you first told me to), I had to adjust screen resolution so that everything could fit on the screen. Ever since then, when I'm in normal mode, everything "seems" like it is smaller than before (text, icons, etc.).
I just rebooted into safe mode to see if I could re-apply the old settings of monitor resolution to make everything appear large and clunky (only in safe mode), but that resolution option no longer appears.
Overall though, it seems to run smoothly after I end that svchost process.

That is normal in safe mode.
Are automatic updates on? That might explain high svchost.exe CPU usage.

Yes, automatic updates are on. I will disable them and update you.
No hurry, take your time :)

Well, everything is running smooth, but I'm getting browser redirects in Firefox (haven't tried in IE).
So, how can we fix these redirects?

UPDATE:
I used Google in Internet Explorer, and I had no redirects. I searched around 15 links, and no redirects occurred.
Firefox redirects when I google something about once every three searches.
So that then indicates that firefox is infected.
You will need completely remove firefox and reinstall it.
Please see here (http://wvistathemes.com/windows/completely-remove-uninstall-firefox/) (steps 1.-4.), reinstall firefox and let me know if it helped.

Ok, I will follow those directions to uninstall Firefox within the next few days.
I used the laptop for quite a while today, and after a few hours, my taskbar changed styles and never reverted. Here is what it looks like... (see attached screenshot).
Other than that, no fake security warnings. At least that part of the malware is gone. :)

And to clarify, the text style of "Jokerman" is set by me. The only problem is that the taskbar itself is supposed to be blue and smooth.

I'm still here. I just haven't had time to uninstall firefox. End of college semester is keeping me busy...

I completely uninstalled firefox and reinstalled it. However, I'm still having to end an svchost.exe process that eats up a lot of CPU. I even turned off automatic updates like you asked.
Should we run a DDS scan or something? I'm considering restoring the entire thing if we can't get this sorted out pretty soon. The windows installation is about 3 years old now.

I just tried to go to the microsoft website to manually check for updates, but it says the page can't be loaded, while using both firefox and internet explorer. That's a new problem...
Restoring is looking like the best route so far...
Can you visit that website if you use webproxy, for example myproxy.ca?

I'm probably just going to do a full system restore. It seems like it's just one problem after another. Do you have any tips for me before or after I restore?
I know that once I do complete the restoration, installing anti-virus/malware software and updating EVERYTHING is the very first thing I should do.
I then recommend to backup needed documents, pictures and so and then doing what you already mentioned.

Okay then. Thanks for ALL of your help, Shaba. I'm sorry that I now must resort to restoring.
