View Full Version : possible malware

I just learned the definition of malware, so my apologies for not posting this in the correct forum to begin with. I hope I am following protocol now, I did read the instructions but a lot of it is greek to me.

I have disabled the tea thing in spybot.

I have installed the ERUNT, clicked only the appropriate box and ran it.

I have not re-booted.

I was unable to bring up the HJT site, so therefore am not including a log.

My problems are:

My email addy friends started receiving emails from me that I did not send. They were noted as from, "Stacey" when normally my emails come as from, "Stacey McKinley". The subject on all the emails was two names, like a first and last name but I do not recognize any of the names. The body of the email contained a link to different drug websites. I also was sent some of these emails from myself so I do have some to show if you would like to see them.

In trying to fix my problem, I first tried to go to norton.com as I have an active subscription with them (I have norton installed on my pc but not on my laptop) The laptop (hp mini) is the one with the problem. I have access to install it on the mini (I know, I know, I should have done this but never did....sigh), but now I can't access any of the major name protection sites including norton.com.

In searching via google, I found spybot, installed it, ran it, it found some cookies, but nothing major. This is how I found this forum.

Thank you so much for your time in looking into my problem.

Warmly,
Stacey

Hi,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Sorry about that, I thought I did both...if this is not the correct one, please let me know...wasn't sure what to do about the zipping and unzipping...I've never zipped a file before, so I didn't do that. If I need to zip it, please tell me how to do that. I so appreciate this!!!!!

UNLESS SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED, DO NOT POST THIS LOG.

Yes, that was correct one.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Thank you. I do not have access to a printer this weekend. Is it ok to proceed with your last request without printing out the guide that they recommend printing before moving forward?

Thanks,
Stacey

Hi,

It would be recommended to print out the instructions unless you have other system among the affected one that you can use to follow the instructions.

Good Morning and thank you again for all your help. You are a blessing!! I'm not 100% sure that when I dragged cfscript to combofix that it did it right...I'm sure you will know right away from the below info. I'm going to wait to hear back before I go to the next step in case I didn't do that right. Thank you again! ~Stacey~

Hi,

That went fine :) Among those instructions listed in my previous post there's one extra thing that has to be done.

Please see if you can find a zip file that name begins as [4]-Submit in c:\qoobox\quarantine folder. If found, upload to this website (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=4). Kindly include a link to this topic in the message.

Regarding the extra thing you gave me to do in the last post, should I do all the other things first and do that last?

I found the file, copied it, registered at bleepingcomputer but don't know what forum to copy it to?

Sorry, I'm very new to threads and such...thanks for your patience and generosity!

2. To "Link to topic where this file was requested:" -field put your topic url (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=56791)
3. "Browse to the file you want to submit:" Use browse button to select the requested file.
4. Click "send file" button.

Hi,

In page with "Download Java SE Runtime Environment 6u20 for Windows, Multi-language" text you should see following things mentioned under Available Files:
Windows Offline Installation
jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe

Click jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe and select location where to save the file (e.g. desktop). You don't have to use red "Download Selected with Sun Download Manager" button.

When we are done with this, would you mind if I asked you some questions regarding some other computer things like norton and java and email options?

Looks good. Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions :)

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

Please download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Run Secunia vulnerability check here (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) and fix its findings. Check should be run once or twice a month.
Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Good free antivirus programs are:
Antivir (http://free-av.com/en/download/1/download_avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html)
Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)
Good commercial ones are from:
Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/homeuser) and
ESET (http://www.eset.com/products/index.php)
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html) or Comodo Firewall Pro (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html#fw3.0) (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation Install Comodo HopSurf.., Make Comodo my default search provider and Make Comodo Search my homepage and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. Am working on my latest assignments...thank you...computer is running much faster...no problems noted so far...should i install my norton that i have access to now or when i'm done with the assignments? i don't think any firewall is set up as it gives me that msg everytime i reboot....i don't even know what firewall is.....will norton automatically take care of the firewall thing or is that something i need to do?

Hi,

You may install Norton after taking those steps outlined in my post. Norton Internet Security has a firewall included. Was that the version you have a license for?

Yes, the Norton is the one that I have the license for. I did all that you said to do and installed Norton. A few questions:

I still have several items on my desktop from our working together....should I delete these? If so, do I also delete them somewhere else other than just right clicking on the desktop and choosing delete?

Were you able to see what my virus or whatever it was was called and/or where it came from?

In the past, my system would ask me if I wanted to update Java when I would first turn it on...should I be saying, Yes, to that?

Is one way better and safer than another to view email? On this system, I go to www.att.net and view my email but I don't like it that I can't preview the email on that same screen...I have to click on the subject and open it to read it. On my pc, I have outlook express I think....and that allows me to see the message on the bottom half of the screen by only highlighting the message. I like that better but don't know how to put it on this computer and whether it is recommended one way or the other.

I thank you so, so, so much for all your help. You are amazing and a very giving person! Thank you for all you do. Is there anywhere I can post a thank you or a kudos or anything that would help you with anything? I would love to do that for you. I will also be making a donation to spybot!

Much thanks and gratitude,
Stacey

One other question...I get lots of emails with spaces at the front of their names or subjects...all trash stuff...is there a way to stop them?

Hi,

I still have several items on my desktop from our working together....should I delete these? If so, do I also delete them somewhere else other than just right clicking on the desktop and choosing delete?
What are the remaining items there after ComboFix has been uninstalled and OTC run?

Were you able to see what my virus or whatever it was was called and/or where it came from?
At least one of infections there was Conficker worm. Of possible reasons for getting infected you may read here (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279).

In the past, my system would ask me if I wanted to update Java when I would first turn it on...should I be saying, Yes, to that?
Yes, it would be easiest to keep Java up-to-date that way.

You're welcome :). We have this (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=17699) topic reserved for that.

Those email related questions are more like general computing related. We deal with malware issues here only. Help with email issues can be asked for example at TechGuy (http://forums.techguy.org).

Hi,

Is spybot search installer file from web or shortcut to the program itself? If it's the first mentioned then it can be removed.

Of those other listed ones I'd keep ATF Cleaner and run it occasionally to get rid of temporary items.
