Hi, there seems to be a problem. I have been trying to upload the DSS and attachment but the forum is either giving me a connection problem page (IE8) or a "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading" error page (Firefox). It will not let me paste the DSS onto the page...what should I do? Sorry!

I am putting the DDS and attach separately as zip filed since for some reason whenever I copy and paste the text of the DDS it won't let me post. I will restate my errors below:

am being plagued by malware I cannot even detect. I was hit by a trojan about a week ago and since then my browsers (both Firefox and IE8) are working a bit odd.

Symptoms:
* Once in awhile a pop up window or tab shows up on both browsers with ads. Obviously there's adware somewhere hidden in my system.
* Windows update doesn't work by clicking on the tab or from the Microsoft page (the infamous "0x80072EFF" error message).

What I have done:
* Run my McAfee enough times and after the initial clean from the first attack, it's caught nothing.
* I installed other items like SuperAntiSpyware and Registry Convoy and Malwarebytes -- they all caught minor things, but they have not cleared the problem.
* I installed Spybot S&D of course and it caught a few more things, but the problems persist.

And all the software are completely up-to-date and I have run all of them numerous times to clean scans.

I am utterly perplexed. As a seasons computer user (my first computer was a Apple IIe in the early 1980s) and one that have managed to self-fix previous issues, this one has utterly puzzled me.

I think you missed Please do NOT run 'FIXES' (ComboFix etc) without being asked (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16806) (ran ComboFix though it shouldn't be used without supervision) sticky. Look for c:\ComboFix.txt file and post back its contents, please.


Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab, uncheck files option and then click scan.
Don't check
Show All
box while scanning in progress!
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.

BTW if it helps the system infection happened around 29/30 April 2010, as you can see from the "attach.txt" log a lot of activities.

Sorry to keep posting, but I managed to "intercept" manually a browser hijack. It opened up ad pages via a domain that looks pretty suspicious:

Typical China-based trojan/malware in my system? Maybe that'll help you identify it. Plus, the long URL of the hijacked window also referred back to a recent Google search. So it is somehow looking at my Google search via history (it doesn't happen when I clear cache).

Hope this helps you ID the problem.

Hi,

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform a quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Post also a fresh dds.txt log.

Hi there,

I had used Malwarebytes in the past and it removed a lot of stuff, but this was before I came on the forum.

I followed your instructions and ran it again (yes, updated) and the log is below. It removed a bunch of items related to that useless programme called Registry Cleaner, so they are not damaging.

I attach the new DDS 2 (DDS.txt and attach.txt) as zips again. I also attach the old Malwarebytes log I did last week before I posted on the forum for your information on what was removed back then.

FYI I use McAfee. Malwarebytes was the first "cleaner" I used after McAfee failed me.

Hi there,

I did everything you listed in order and the logs are all attached:

1st: Combofix gave me log.zip
2nd: I deleted my Java and Adobe reader and re-installed both
3rd: I ran ATF cleaner
4th: I ran the Kaspersky online scan, which took over 3 hours.
Log is KAS.zip and it did remove some Java-related trojans.
5th: I ran DDS and it produced DDS.zip and attach.zip

I tested the system and the same pop-ups are still happening on IE8 and it still cannot check for Windows Updates. I also noticed that constantly in the Popup settings section of options it keeps allowing something called "PopupMgr" even though I remove it. Another clue.

Hi there,

I did what you asked but a little differently. The cmd.exe does not accept pastes (I'm using XP) so I typed all of it in manually. Then on the restart, it went straight to normal Windows, so I restarted and manually got to the Recovery Console page.

I chose option 3 (number was different as my #1 was a D drive). Then followed the rest of your instructions and restarted.

To my pleasant surprise my IE8 allowed the Windows Update site to be accessed again, and it loaded. And no pop-up windows have appeared in the last 20 minutes as I continue to test.

I did notice, however, my McAfee catching 2 "programmes" that wanted access to the Internet. Not sure what they were, or if they are reminants of the problems. In any case, they were:

ldpf486.exe
itmo.tmp (within it is svchost.exe)

The McAfee blocked both. Please let me know if they are legit or bad.

Anyway, attached is the GMER log from after all this. Please don't quite close this thread yet until I know for sure it is fine.

Those two are not likely legit so don't let them access net. Please try to run ComboFix in normal mode now (disable protection first). Post back the log and fresh dds log (copy-paste contents of both if possible).

Hi there,

I'll post the Combofix log below. While Combofix ran it said it had to upload a few files for further analysis. Not sure what that will lead to, but the upload was apparently successful. Below are 2 logs -- the Combofix log itself (log) and a DeQuarantine file it also generated.

I also ran the ATF so things are clean. I will run the Kaspersky later and since it takes over 3 hours to complete, I guess you will read what happens tomorrow morning in Suomi.

BTW my McAfee picked up another item (c:\windows\fonts\1RCXdqu.com) which I believe the Combofix caught.

Hi,

I did the Kaspersky scan and the log is below. It caught a few Java-based items. I think it was the same as the scan I did last time on Kaspersky. I forgot that the online scan does not remove the items -- so I manually removed them. I re-scanned the section and it came out clean.

Oddly I used both McAfee and Malwarebytes to scan that Java folder before I manually removed those trojans and they skipped it! Is Kaspersky that much better than McAfee?!

Oddly I used both McAfee and Malwarebytes to scan that Java folder before I manually removed those trojans and they skipped it! Is Kaspersky that much better than McAfee?!
All scanners don't target same items.

Also, you still have to update Adobe Reader to 9.3.2 version.

Good. Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.


THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis


Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK



Please download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.


Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.


UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.


Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.



The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Run Secunia vulnerability check here (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) and fix its findings.



Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Hi,

There doesn't appear to be any problems anymore, although the frames are rather slow on my IE8. Maybe that's just a virtual memory issue.

I followed all your clean-up steps. The setting on IE8 was already the same as you suggested. And I do update (check) at least 3 times a week manually, which is how I found this problem the first time (when the Windows Update page would not load).

I will run a few last scans and it should be clear.
