You need to install the detection updates first by using the integrated update or the manual updater.
my question is, how do i actually get to start scanning?
I have the same problem...does anybody know what to do

Hello,
Before you run your first scan you need to install the detection updates first.
Yesterday the update server was not available for quite some time due to maintenance.
Please try again now.

Just download and run that file - it is self-installing.
