View Full Version : Unexpected error in fixing problems

After running Spybot (fully updated) the following problems are identified;
Fraud.WindowsProtectionSuite 15 entries - Malware
Microsoft.Windows.RedirectHosts - 3 entries - SecurityC
When I try to "Fix" either of these errors, I get an error that reads, "Unexpected error in ficing problems (Cannot create file "C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts". Access denied)
I have tried to remove these issues while on the domaine and while off the domaine in Safe Mode with no connection to the network and still get the same errors. I have tried Malwarebytes as well as AdAware and they do not seem to find these errors and do run clean at this time.
Would appreciate some guidance or removing/repairing these problems.

Hello,
Please delete your old host file.
Where the hosts file is located depends on your Windows version.
Windows 2000/XP/NT: C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
Windows 95/98: C:\windows\hosts
Then download a new host file from this site (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt).
Copy the whole text.
Then create a new txt file on your desktop and name it hosts without any extensions.
Then paste the text into it and store the file at the same place like mentioned above.

The Wininit error is a different error, so I would suggest to open a new thread than posting in an existing one with an other error message.
About the problem:
This is a common error code seen in our software. Although it is a common Windows error code, it's not really an error so much as an administrative access issue. Spybot requires that you have administrative rights over the machine upon which you install them.
Right-click the Spybot - Search & Destroy entry in your start menu,
instead of just left-clicking to start it.
Then, choose Run as administrator from the context menu.

Hello,
I am having exactly the same issue as the previous user, Spybot has located 15 Malware entries under Fraud.WindowsProtectionSuite and 3 security centre entries under Microsoft.Windows.RedirectedHosts. When I attempt to fix selected problems I get Access Denied error...
I have followed your instructions in deleting hosts file and storing new txt. file with info from the site above yet I am still getting access denied message.
Could you please advise where I can go from here?

Hello,
Did you remove the extension txt from the file so that it is only named hosts and not hosts.txt?
Have you also deleted any host backup files in that folder?
Make sure all files are visible.
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

after running spybot for the first time i now have a radio screen picture about 4 cms wide and two cms high on the left side of my screen. i cant move it or remove it what is this.
that should be a wireless tower it is a wireless tower something like the old RKO tower and B next to it.

And when I searched I couldn't find a match for exactly what it might be.
Did you happen to install anything different right before you downloaded Spybot?Or,were you listening to a radio station,or anything.....?
no i didnt and i dont listen to radio on the computer except occasional horse race. but it has gone now was worried for a while maybe spybot got rid of it on a boot up. hadnt seen it before. thanks for taking an interest.
