View Full Version : Internet Browsers hijacked, esp google search links

Hi,
I've run sbsd, mbam & antivir like 10 times over and even in safemode, but i'm still infected!

The symptom is that my browser(IE 8 & Firefox) keeps getting hijacked, especially when i click on a google search result. When i click on a google search result i get redirected to some random ad websites. And sometimes a new tab(in firefox) or a new window (in IE8) just opens up n it's own (haven't observed any trigger).

Historically, last year i had a Virtumonde infection which i tackled using the same softwares mentioned above and also did some cleaning manually. So that has some remanants(eg. startup registry for some file called zisamedu, i have deleted the file) which i did not know how to get rid of and they seemed harmless.

Mbam discovered fruadpack and fake antivirus (avsoft & avsuit) a couple a days ago, i believe they were downlaoded by the real infection that has not been detected fo far. Posting below the DDS log.

Absolutely desparate call for help!!!

Hello and welcome to Safer Networking.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Sorry for the delay in replying, the forum is very busy. If you still need help, please do the following:

Step # 1 run DDS

Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Step # 2: Download and Run Gmer

Please download gmer.zip (http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip) from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

***Please close any open programs ***

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOTKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click No.

If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure that the 'Sections' button is ticked and the 'Show All' button is unticked. Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.

Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
Click OK.

GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. The two DDS Logs (DDS and Attach.txt)
2. The GMER Log

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

Hi,

I have already posted the dds log in my previous post. I tried running gmer on my comp., now my computer does not even connect to the internet. (I know it is not an internet connection issue as I am able to connect to internet on my other computer)

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thank

I have already posted the dds log in my previous post

Your last DDS Log was dated May 28th. I need to see a fresh DDS Log from you.

We can use your other computer and a Flash/USB Drive to transfer files/logs back and forth until we can get your Internet fixed on your infected computer.

Download both DDS and GMER from the clean computer and transfer them over to your infected computer using the USB Drive, then run them (using my instructions from my previous post) on the computer and transfer the logs back over to the clean computer to posted here.

Post the two DDS Logs (DDS and Attach.txt) and the GMER Log.

Thanks. :)

gmer just isn't running on my computer. The internet connectivity problem started after i tried running gmer the first time. When i run gmer it's window opens up and it just stalls endlessly.

Ok, since GMER is giving you problems, we'll try another rootkit scanner in its place.

Step # 1 Download and run SysProt

Download SysProt Antirootkit from the link below (you will find it at the bottom of the page under attachments, or you can get it from one of the mirrors).

http://sites.google.com/site/sysprotantirootkit/

Unzip it into a folder on your desktop.

Double click Sysprot.exe to start the program.

Click on the Log tab.
In the Write to log box select the following items only:
Process
Kernel Modes
SSDT
Kernel Hooks
Hidden Files
Click on the Create Log button on the bottom right.
After a few seconds a new window should appear.
Select Scan Root Drive. Click on the Start button.
When it is complete a new window will appear to indicate that the scan is finished.
The log will be saved automatically in the same folder Sysprot.exe was extracted to. Open the text file and copy/paste the log here.

Post the SysProt Log and the two fresh DDS Logs (DDS and Attach.txt) in your next post/reply.

Hi,

Here are the DDS logs . I finally got gmer running but it crashed my system (blue screen) everytime. Will try the new tool you suggested today.

Sorry I've been so sketchy so far. The other computer is not really my computer, it's my roommates comp and that too not personal comp. Also , just a prenote, the comp is here only during the weekend so if my comp won't get online by sunday night i'll probably vanish monday. :(

Thank for you all your help and effort so far.

Another thing i forgot to mention; everytime I right click or hit delete windows installer starts up and starts installing norto antivirus which is already installed.

Also, in the DDS log, the line starting with 'LSA" look suspicious. They contain names of files I had manually deleted during my Virtumonde infection.

C: is FIXED (NTFS) - 70 GiB total, 2.367 GiB free.

Your computer is extremely low on free space. Uninstall any programs/games you no longer need/use via Add/Remove Programs. Also, if there is any movies, music and other files you no longer need/use, transfer them to either a USB/Flash Drive or an external Hard Drive to free up some space.

Step # 1:Remove one of your Anti Virus programs.

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus

Symantec AntiVirus

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove one of them.

Step # 2: Disable Teatimer

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

This is a two step process.
First step: Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
If you have the version 1.5 or 1.6, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version : Open Spybot S&D
Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
If your firewall raises a question, say OK
In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
OK any prompts.
Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Step # 3: Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

*Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hi KM,

Was unable to do the second step required to disable spybot resident. When i hit the resident tab in spybot, it returns an 'out of memory' error message. I have uninstalled almost all the programs on my system and deleted a lot of files. Currently have 11 GB free. I have also uninstalled both the anti-virus softwares. i'm planning to uninstall spybot. or should i run combofix in safemode? What do you suggest i do?

Thanks

Go ahead and uninstall Spybot, you can reinstall later if you choose to do so.

Since you freed up a lot of space and since you need one, I would install an AntiVirus on your computer. You can either reinstall Avira or choose another free AV, which I'll link to you below:

2)avast! Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download)

Whatever one you choose to be sure to disable it before running ComboFix. If you choose Avast, here are the instructions to disable it:

* Right click on avast! Antivirus icon near the clock and select Stop On-Access Protection.
* Right click on this icon again and select Program Settings.
* On the left, click on Troubleshooting.
* Uncheck (untick) this box - Disable avast! self-defense module.
* Click OK to apply the settings

If the above doesn't work, do the following:

Right click on the toolbar icon, then pull down "avast shield control" and click "Disable for 1 hour".

As for running ComboFix, go ahead and run it in Normal Mode.

Thanks. I'll uninstall spybot. Can I run combofix without an antivirus software on my computer?

Yes, you can. :) But once we run ComboFix and get your Internet connection on your computer up and running, we'll need to install an AntiVirus.

Thanks :) was waiting for this. I have an old setup.exe of avira on my comp. so that will have to do for now. off to run Combofix now.

btw, recently i've been getting these error reports from windows - "windows has just recovered from a serious error" . i hope it's not a biggie :(

Well maybe not hurrah yet, is it fixed? What next?

The first step in this post should restore your internet connection. Once your internet connection is restored, immediately install Avira and then update it.

Step # 1: Restore Proxy Settings

In Internet Explorer: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings".

Open up Firefox, go to Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection. And once in "Connection Settings" box, make sure that Direct Connection to the Internet has a mark by it then click OK.

Step # 2: Download and Install Recovery Console

Seems your missing an important part of your operating system. Let's get it reinstalled in case you ever need it.
Nothing is going to change on your computer other than we are going to reinstall the Recovery Console.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

At that page, scroll down and click on the appropriate download for your version of Windows XP (Home or Professional) and the service pack level that you have installed. When you click on the link to download the file, make sure you save it directly to your desktop. If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), then select the Service Pack 2 download. If you are using Windows XP Media Center, then you should select the Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 download. If you are unsure what version of Windows you have and what Service Pack is installed, you can follow these instructions to gain that information.

Click on the Start button.

Click on the Run menu option.

In the Open: field type the following: sysdm.cpl and then click on the OK button.

A screen will appear showing information about your installation. Under the System: category you should see your Windows version and the installed Service Pack.

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Click and drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

At the next prompt, click 'No'.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Step # 3: Run CFScript

Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

KILLALL::

DDS::

uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

FireFox::

FF - ProfilePath - c:\documents and settings\Ashish\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\0rqw79jb.default\
FF - prefs.js: browser.search.defaulturl - hxxp://slirsredirect.search.aol.com/slirs_http/sredir?sredir=2685&invocationType=tb50ffwinampie7&query=
FF - prefs.js: keyword.URL - hxxp://slirsredirect.search.aol.com/slirs_http/sredir?sredir=2685&invocationType=tb50ffwinampab&query=

Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

Note: This CFScript is for use on tommytommy's computer only! Do not use it on your computer.

Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

NOTE:

If you can't online after completing Step #1, try doing Step #1 again after completing Step #3

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Are you able to get online with your computer?
2. Recovery Console Log
3. The ComboFix Log that appears after Step 3 has been completed.
4. A fresh DDS Log taken after Step 3 has been completed.

Hi,

Computer's back online :). woohooo!!!

I have installed and updated Avast!. Thanks for recommending that one :). Also updated Windows.

I think, i dont have the windows recovery console because this comp came loaded with the thinkvantage rescue and recovery. anyway as it seems combofix uses windows rescue console, i will install it and re-run combofix.

Thank so much so far :)

Hi,

I made a huge mistake i guess. as you will see i downloaded the recovery console and dragged it to ComboFix but i accidentally clicked yes when i was supposed to click no i guess..so combofix continued running. i guess the idea was to stop combofix and run it with the script?

well i'm posting the combofix log here anyway. how do i run the script now? should i just rerun combofix with the script? sorry for the goof up

well i'm posting the combofix log here anyway. how do i run the script now? should i just rerun combofix with the script? sorry for the goof up

It's no problem. :) Go ahead and rerun ComboFix with the script as instructed in Step #3.

Before you do that, since you have internet connection back, we want to make sure you have the latest version of ComboFix.

First, delete ComboFix.exe, then download the latest version from one of the links below:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

Be sure to save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop.

Hi,

Well everything ran smoothly. i have posted the Combofix & DDS logs. I'm not sure how to access the recovery console logs now. What do you think? clean? :)

I also have a side question, if it is ok to ask. So before running combofix the first time, i backed up my data on an external Harddrive. The backup software categorized all the files on the system. The odd thing was that it showed 40GiB of data as 'system' files. Any idea what it means? other categories were documents, images, music etc.

Well, gzillions thanks once again for fixing my computer. Have a great weekend. :)

No need to worry about accessing Recovery Console log, your past ComboFix Logs show that you have sucessfully installed Recovery Console. Both the ComboFix and DDS Logs you just posted look great. :) Just a few more scans/things to do and we'll be done. :bigthumb:

System files are files that are important to the System/the computer, you need them so that your computer works. If one or more go missing, more often than not you can't boot up your computer. Don't know why the backup software would say you have 40GB of 'system' files, you might have that much 'system' files on your computer, best to ask the backup software company directly. They probably have a website where you can contact them or post in their forum and ask about it. :)

Step # 1 Remove old versions of Java

Older Java versions have vulnerabilities and need to be removed.

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

Java(TM) 6 Update 3

Reboot your Computer.

Step # 2: Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:

well, now that it seems whatever my computer had is gone, I'm just a little curious to know what it was. I'm also curious about what the little nifty script you wrote for ComboFix was meant to do :D. Finally do you think my external backup would have been infected or the thing wasn't contagious like that?

hehehe lots of curious little questions. BTW anymore prescriptions for the PC? :D

and once again Mucho Grande Gracias!!! :)

km2357

What your computer had, besides leftovers from a previous virtumonde/vundo infection, an infection called TDSS/TDL3. What it does is redirect your computer and infects/modifies certain driver files (in your case atapi.sys, which ComboFix found and disinfected and replaced :) ).

As for the CFScript, it got rid of some bad registry entries in Firefox and IE.

As for your external Hard Drive, it should be ok, but I would scan with your Anti-Virus just to be safe.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Adobe Reader 8.1.7.
Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html)
On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
Click the Continue button
Click Run, and click Run again
Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 9.3.2 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3.3.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/index.php

If you decide to install Foxit 3.3.0 instead of Adobe, do the following during Foxit's Setup/Installation process:

Uncheck the following boxes:

I accept the License Terms and want to install Foxit Toolbar

Make Ask.com my default search

Create desktop, quick launch and start menu icon to eBay

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log
2. A fresh DDS Log
3. How is your computer doing, any problems?

Hi,

Step #1 is done and i opted for foxit as you recommended. Thanks :).

About Step #2, we'll i've been trying to run kaspersky all day. It seems to keep getting stuck. I mean it starts scanning but after an hour and a half of scanning (and only does 19%) it just randomly stalls. Am i doing something wrong? should i disable my anti-virus first? also the problem is that it is indicating that it has found 1 threat and 3 infected objects. Hellllp!

Hi,

I scanned my computer with Avast! 3 times - quick scan, full system scan, and boot-time scan. I'm not sure how to copy-paste the scan logs here, so i'll just give you a summary.

All three caught a total of 4 files.
2 related to Win32:Alureon-FZ (TDSS i believe) of which one was just one of the combofix quarantined files.
2 related to Java:Djewers-L (Trojan)

i've quarantined everything. posting DDS logs below

Don't see any problems with your DDS Logs.

Since Kaspersky was giving you problems, let's try another online scanner in its place.

Before that, since Avast found some items related to Java, let's go ahead and clear your Java Cache:

Step # 1 Clear Java's Cache

Click Start > Control Panel

Double-click the Java icon in the control panel. (coffeecup icon)
Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.

-The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.

Click Delete Files.

-The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
-There are two options on this window to clear the cache.

Applications and Applets
Trace and Log Files

Make sure both are checked

Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.

-Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.

Click OK on Temporary Files Settings window.
Close the Java Control Panel

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
ESET OnlineScan (http://eset.com/onlinescan) Click the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetOnline.png button. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps) Click on http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetExport.png to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop. Double click on the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png icon on your desktop. Check http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetAcceptTerms.png Click the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetStart.png button. Accept any security warnings from your browser. Check http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetScanArchives.png Push the Start button. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time. When the scan completes, push http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetListThreats.png
Make sure that Remove found threats is unchecked
Push http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetExport.png, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply. Push the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetBack.png button. Push http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetFinish.png

Post the ESET Log in your next post/reply and let me know how your computer is doing.

If there are no other problems, then you are good to go. :)

You can delete the following off of your computer:

DDS.scr
The two DDS Logs
GMER.zip
GMER.exe
SysProt.zip
SysProt.exe
The SysProt Log

To remove ComboFix from your computer, do the following:

Go to Start > Run - type in ComboFix /Uninstall & click OK

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Please take the time to read my All Clean Post.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Make sure the C:\ drive is selected and click OK. If your computer's Hard Drive is not located on C:, change it to the correct drive letter then click OK.
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created..

Clearing your restore points is not something you should do on a regular basis. Normally, this process only needs to be done after clearing out an infestation of malware.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure This can be done by following these simple instructions: From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub frames across different domains to Prompt When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it asks you if you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK

Use An Antivirus Software and Keep It Updated - It is very important that your computer has an antivirus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a day. If you do not update your antivirus software, then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit Microsoft Updates (http://update.microsoft.com/) regularly. This will ensure your computer has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install SpywareBlaster SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line Anti Malware (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=54#54)
Use the hosts file: Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate web pages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain web pages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional. Download mvps hosts file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial HERE (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html) If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button on the task bar at the bottom of your screen Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then doubleclick it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok..
Use an alternative instant messenger program.Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc/) and Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.com/) These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
Please read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place (http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showtopic=5931)
Please read Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and Dialers (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial41.html)
Please read Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial82.html)
If you are using Internet Explorer, please consider using an alternate browser: Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox) or
Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/).
If you decide to use either FireFox or Opera, it is very important that you keep them up to date and check frequently for updates of the browser of your choice.
Update all these programs regularly Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If your computer was infected by a website, a program, IM, MSN, or p2p, check this site because it is Time To Fight Back (http://spyware-free.us/2006/01/time-to-fight-back.html). Follow these steps and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here's a good website to read about Malware prevention:

If your computer is running slow, click here (http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php) for instructions on how to help speed up your computer.

Good luck!

Please reply one last time so that I know you have read my post and this thread can be closed.

Wow! Is it fixed really. Thank you soooo much. :bighug:
Well before we go, i had a few questions(things i'm still worried about), if you don't mind :)

1. I have an 80 GB Harddisk. It is currenly displaying 53 GB as used. However, after adding up the size of all the folders on C Drive (i have only one drive) i'm able to account for only 25 GB. Do you have any idea where i would find the remaining data? Or is this some sort of Virus effect :(

2. I have 2 instances each of CLI.exe & atievxx.exe running on my system constantly. Is that normal?

3. Is the ESET log clean? i mean it seems to have found 1 malware, no?

4. Do you recommend i continue to use ESET & ATF cleaner once in a while? or is it not required and i can delete them?

5. I uninstalled Combofix as you instructed, but it has left 1 folder on my C Drive. What is that?

Finally, I would like to make a small donation to say thank you support your fight againts malware. Please direct me to where you would like me to make the donation. you were absolutely great! Your every response was meticulously crafted, detailed and formatted, that it was unbelievable. And you were so patient with me :) . Thank you so much again.

It doesn't sound like a virus effect. It sounds like the remaining data that you can't account for, is probably the files and folders normally hidden by your computer. It doesn't sound like anything to worry about. :)

2. I have 2 instances each of CLI.exe & atievxx.exe running on my system constantly. Is that normal?

Both of those are related to your ATI display adapter/card. And after doing some research it looks like that is normal for cli.exe and atievxx.ese to have 2 (or sometimes more) instances running on your computer.

3. Is the ESET log clean? i mean it seems to have found 1 malware, no?

The ESET Log is clean/good. What it found, it deleted and quarantined. It didn't find anything that we take care of ourselves. :)

4. Do you recommend i continue to use ESET & ATF cleaner once in a while? or is it not required and i can delete them?

ESET you don't need to use, so you can go ahead and uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs. Go to Add-Remove Programs and choose ESET Online Scanner, once it has been removed, reboot your computer.

As for ATF Cleaner, I would keep it on your computer and run it every couple weeks or so. It'll help keep your computer clean of temp files and other such junk files.

5. I uninstalled Combofix as you instructed, but it has left 1 folder on my C Drive. What is that?

What is the name of the folder? If it is ComboFix or Qoobox it sounds like a leftover from ComboFix and you can go ahead and delete the folder.

Thank you for wanting to make a donation, it is greatly appreciated. :)

Hi,

Sorry about that. I was just a little bit depressed with the first answer (though it's good news ). I've gone through everything in the all clean post (just for future posts the tony klien link is broken, i googled it anyway). don't have anymore questions. Well maybe just one. there's a whole bunch of free antispyware out there and firewalls any that you recommend in particular?

You can close this thread. Than you so much :crowned:

Thanks for the note about the Tony Klein link, I've replaced it with a working one. :bigthumb:

As for free anti-spyware out there, the best out there (in my opinion) is MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware. Just be sure to keep it updated and run Quick Scans with it every 2 weeks or so. Spybot is also another good one if you want another scanner, but I wouldn't go more than having two anti-spyware/malware programs.

As for free firewalls, if you decide to go that route:

There are a few firewalls available for free that appear to be good and easy to use:

Jetico Personal Firewall (http://www.jetico.com/jpf2.htm)
Soft perfect (http://www.softperfect.com/products/firewall/)
Sunbelt Kerio Firewall (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)

Please download and install only one!

Once the firewall is installed, check to see that the Windows Firewall is disabled. To do so follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, check to see if Off (not recommended) is checkmarked/ticked, if it is not, then checkmark/tick the box and click OK
