Uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis. To access the Uninstall Manager, do the following:

Start HijackThis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

P2P Programs

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

µTorrent
StreamTorrent 1.0
UUSee*
Veetle TV 0.9.16

I'd like you to read this information (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Your use of P2P is most likely the reason why your computer is infected.

If you do not wish to stop using P2P software, your best option is to reformat and reinstall windows as other forums and helpers I know of work by the identical policy.

Please post back even if you don't wish to continue so I can quickly move on to help other malware victims.

If you decide to continue, then uninstall the programs as requested and follow the instructions below:

CKScanner
Download CKScanner by askey127 from Here (http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/CKScanner.exe) & save it to your Desktop. Right click the CKScanner.exe icon and choose Run As Administrator
When the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File
A message box will verify the file saved
Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop then copy/paste the contents in your next reply

Please reply with:
Did you run into any problems uninstalling programs or when following my instruction?
the CKScanner-log

and/or

Your decision to continue or not.

I successfully uninstalled all the programs you told me to... I ran the program under my name(im the administrator right?), b/c the option wasn't there to run as administrator.

I did everything you told me to do with ckscanner, however, the ckfile had no content. So i have nothing to paste..

Hi.

I'm sorry about the mistake in my instructions. Make sure you saved CKScanner.exe to your desktop, if not move the file to your desktop and run it again. The scan will always produce a log with some content. Please run the scan again and post the log. If you for some reason already deleted the program you can follow the correct instructions below:

CKScanner
Download CKScanner by askey127 from Here (http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/CKScanner.exe) & save it to your Desktop. Double click the CKScanner.exe icon to start the program.
When the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File
A message box will verify the file saved
Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop then copy/paste the contents in your next reply

CKScanner - Additional Security Risks - These are not necessarily bad

I realized that i had to press on search file(not in instructions you gave me) before i press save file.

You may stop following these instructions at any time and ask for advise if any problems occur. If so, carefully describe what happened in your post.

Step 1. Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan:

Start the already installed CCleaner. (Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).

Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours.
Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.

Step 2. Add/Remove Programs

Please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following as they might conflict with the fix. There might be more than one entry of each:

Ad-Aware
SuperAntiSpyware

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Step 3. Malwarebytes Anti Malware

Start the already installed Malwarebytes Anti Malware.
Navigate to the Update tab, click Check for Updates and complete the update process.
Navigate to the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Check all items and click Remove Selected.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Step 4. Disable AVG9

Open AVG User Interface.
Double-click on the Resident Shield.
Un-check the option Resident Shield active.
Save the changes.

Step 5. GMER

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here (http://www.gmer.net/download.php).
Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All << (don't miss this one)
See image below, Click the image to enlarge it
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c227/tetonbob/gmer_th.gif (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c227/tetonbob/gmer_screen2-1.gif)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

You can now re-enable AVG.

When completed, please post back the following in the order asked for:
Did you encounter any problems following my instructions?
the Malwarebytes log
the Gmer log
a fresh HiJackThis log
Are you still experiencing redirects?

Continue to reply to this thread until I tell you that the logs are clean! Absence of symptoms does not necessarily mean a clean computer!

An emergency just came up and I have to drive down to Miami. This is a desktop so I won't be near my comp. I'll be back Sunday night and perform everything you've have told me in the previous post.

Hope this isn't a problem!

Thank you for everything:)

TDSSKiller just removed the Backdoor.Tidserv (http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2008-091809-0911-99) Backdoor/Trojan/Rootkit. Due to the functionality of this particular malware, it's impossible to tell what may have been done when the system was compromised.

Therefore it may be prudent to:

Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts.
Change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password)

Read this for further information:
What are rootkits from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rootkit)
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451)

Start CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan:

Start CCleaner and click the Run Cleaner button. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.

Disable AVG9

Open AVG User Interface.
Double-click on the Resident Shield.
Un-check the option Resident Shield active.
Save the changes.

Run Eset online scanner.

If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download "esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe" when prompted... then double click on it to install.

Please go to ESET Online Scanner (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/) - © ESET All Rights Reserved... to run an online scan.

Press the "ESET Online Scanner" button.
Check the box next to "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
Click "Start"... a window will open... it may appear nothing is happening... please be patient.
Click Yes... at the run ActiveX prompt. Click Install... at the install ActiveX prompt.
Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
Click "Start". Make sure that the options: Remove found threats is UNCHECKED
Leave the "default" settings under Advanced as they are, if not set , please check:
Scan for potentially unwanted applications
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
Click "Start"... ESET scanner will begin to download the virus signatures database.
When the signatures have been downloaded, the scan will start automatically.
Wait for the scan to finish... it may take a while... please be patient. When the scan is finished...
Use Notepad to open the log file located at C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste the contents of log.txt in your next reply.

Re-enable AVG after the scan has finished. Please don't bring any files onto the computer while AVG is disabled.

Posting checklist:

How is your computer performing now? Any redirects?
The Kaspersky log
A fresh HijackThis log.

Continue to reply to this thread until I tell you that the logs are clean! Absence of symptoms does not necessarily mean a clean computer!

2. Yes the ESET log, my mistake.

Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs. Also please do not run any scans other than those requested or do any self help as this complicates the process for me.

Add/Remove Programs

Please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following outdated java. You have to close all internet browsers during the uninstall.

Java(TM) 6 Update 18

Please wait with the reinstall of Java, I will give you instructions in one of my next posts.

Please reboot your computer. Run DDS again and post both logs.

Firefox reset

Please read all of the instructions before doing anything. You may want to copy/paste the following instructions to a notepad window.

Click Start -> Run and copy/paste the following line into the run box:
firefox -safe-mode

Now close Firefox and wait for about 10 seconds to make sure it's completely closed, then click OK in the Run box.
A Firefox Safe Mode settings box will appear, click Continue in Safe Mode.
Surf a couple of pages to notice the performance, then close firefox (completely).
Start Firefox in safe mode again. Check all options except the option to reset the bookmarks.
Click Make Changes and Restart.
Surf a couple of pages to notice the performance.

When finished please post back:

The dds logs.
Did you achieve the desired performance in Firefox?

Hi

It seems to me that you have used MSConfig to make some changes to your system. Never attempt to boot into Safe Mode using this program, it can result in a unbootable computer.

Let's get a second opinion with RootRepeal:

RootRepeal

Please download RootRepeal (http://ad13.geekstogo.com/rrbeta/RootRepeal.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
close all other programs then run it by double-clicking on the file named RootRepeal.exe
Once the main window shows up, please click on the Report button on the bottom of the window.
Next, please click the Scan button.
Another window will pop up asking you to select what to include in the scan. Please uncheck everything except for the Stealth Code checkbox, and then click OK.
Once the program has finished scanning, the results will appear. Click on the Save Report button, and save the report to your Desktop.
Please post the log in you're next reply.

Stay with me to the end! :)

Just curious. Do you know how i got the the backdoor.tidserv?

It is highly likely due to the use of P2P software.

Please re-run RootRepeal:

Double click RootRepeal.exe to start the program
Click the Report tab at the bottom of the program window
Click the Scan button
In the Select Scan dialog, check: Drivers
Processes
Files
Hidden Services
SSDT
Shadow SSDT
Callbacks
Click the OK button
In the next dialog, select all drives showing
Click OK to start the scanNote: The scan can take some time. DO NOT run any other programs while the scan is running When the scan is complete, the Save Report button will become available
Click this and save the report to your Desktop as RootRepeal.txt
Go to File then Exit to close the program

Backup the Registry

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT >> ERUNT.

Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
System registry
Current user registry
Next click on OK
When the Question pop-up appears click on Yes
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! popup will appear
Now click on OK. A backup has been created.

Note: If you have uninstalled ERUNT, please post back before proceeding any further.

1. The registry thing was successful.

2. The performance of the computer is pretty good.

Also, I can't play videos(youtube, etc.). I guess this is because i have don't have java yet. I'm not installing it, until you tell me to do so.

Anyways, thanks for everything so far:)

You're welcome. I'm glad I could help. :)

AVG

Make sure you have re-enabled AVG:

Open AVG User Interface.
Double-click on the Resident Shield.
Check the option Resident Shield active.
Save the changes and close AVG.

Update Windows and Internet Explorer

Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from malware. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

Reinstall Java

Download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 20 (http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=39494)

Delete the following tools

DDS
GMER
rkill
TDSSKiller
RootRepeal
You can just delete the files.

Your computer now appears to be malware free. The logs are clean. Good job!

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure.

Create a new and delete old system restore points:

Now you should Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one . Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click System Restore.
Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click Next. Give the R.P. a name then click Create. The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
Then go to Start > Run and type:
cleanmgr
Click OK and new window will open.
Choose drive C and click ok.
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one. New window will open and click OK to remove all previous restore points except the recent one.

Note: Do this only ONCE, do not reset regularly.

Keep your system updated:

Enable automatic updates for Windows XP to get the latest patches from Microsoft to fix bugs and security holes.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updates
Select Automatic (recommended) radio button if you want the updates to be downloaded and installed without prompting you.
Select Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them radio button if you want the updates to be downloaded automatically but to be installed at another time.
Select Notify me but don't automatically download or install them radio button if you want to be notified of the updates.

Keep your non-Microsoft applications updated as well:

Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities, to check for other vulnerable programs running on your PC that are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector) - I suggest that you run it and install the suggested updates at least once a week.

Secure your computer further:

I recommend you to download and install the following programs (if not already present), and updating of them on a regular basis.

Install SpywareBlaster & make sure to update it regularly
SpywareBlaster is a program that is used to secure Internet Explorer by making it harder for ActiveX (http://surfthenetsafely.com/activex.htm) programs to run on your computer. It does this by disabling known offending ActiveX programs from running at all.

You can download SpywareBlaster from Javacool (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) and learn how to use it in the tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html) at Bleeping Computer..

Install and use Spybot Search & Destroy
Instructions are located here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html). Make sure you update, reimmunize & scan regularly.

Enable Teatimer option in Spybot Search & Destroy
Open Spybot S&D.
Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode.
Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools.
then, also in left panel, click Resident (shows a red/white shield).
If your firewall raises a question, say OK.
In the Resident protection status frame, check the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active.
OK any prompts.
Click Mode, choose Default Mode.
Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Make use of the HOSTS file included with Spybot Search & Destroy
Every version of windows includes a hosts file as part of them. A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
Spybot Search & Destroy has a good HOSTS file built in, to enable the HOSTS file in Spybot Search & Destroy.

Run Spybot Search & Destroy.
Click on Mode, and then place a tick next to Advanced mode.
Click Yes.
In the left hand pane of Spybot Search & Destroy, click on Tools, and then on Hosts File.
Click on Add Spybot-S&D hosts list.

Note: On some PCs, having a custom HOSTS file installed can cause a significant slowdown. Following these instructions should resolve the issue:
Click Start > Run Type services.msc & click OK
In the list, find the service called DNS Client & double click on it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click OK & then close the Services window.

Hosts File
If you don't use Spybot S&D's hosts file, then install the following for the added protection: MVPS Hosts (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm), you will find more information regarding hosts files there. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is here (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=22187).

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and perform a quick scan 1-2 times a week.

NoScript
Use the NoScript (http://noscript.net/) addon for Firefox to avoid malicious scripting attacks.

Install and use a firewall with outbound protection.

Looking over your log it seems you don't use any third party FIREWALL. As the term conveys a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders.

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to phone home for more instructions. Simply put Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

I would recommend to install install a free firewall for personal use from one of these excellent vendors. Choice is yours:

Agnitum Outpost Firewall Free (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
Online-Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html)

See Bleepingcomputer's excellent tutorial to help using and understanding a firewall here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial60.html)

Note: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one firewall program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.

It is absolutely essential that you keep Java, Adobe and all of your security programs up to date
