I'd appreciate any adivice!

Having problems here - redirect hijack with both FF and IE8 and looking at the source code it always seems to be a Javascript redirect through mfeed.in == I have run "Hijack This" and log is below. Any thoughts?

TIA

Scott

Hello Thinkerer and welcome to the forums. Sorry for the delay in getting to your post.

If you still need help please do the following:

Download This file (http://www.gmer.net/download.php). Note its name and save it to your root folder, such as C:\.

Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with this file.
Click on this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of programs that should be disabled.
Double-click on the downloaded file to start the program. (If running Vista, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator")
Allow the driver to load if asked.
You may be prompted to scan immediately if it detects rootkit activity.
If you are prompted to scan your system click "Yes" to begin the scan.
If not prompted, click the "Rootkit/Malware" tab.
On the right-side, all items to be scanned should be checked by default except for "Show All". Leave that box unchecked.
Select the drive that Windows is installed on, typically C:\, and uncheck the rest.
Click the Scan button to begin. (Please be patient as it can take some time to complete)
When the scan is finished, click Save to save the scan results to your Desktop.
Save the file as Results.txt and copy/paste the contents in your next reply. If the file is too large to copy and paste you can upload it.
Exit the program and re-enable all active protection when done.

The system is now resetting before GMER completes its operation, but the log only showed new information at the very start - nothing was added after the first few minutes.

I ran the program again and saved the log periodically so the (partial?) results are attached.

Should I try this in "Safe" mode or is this enough to go on?

Thanks very much for your help!

I think that's enough to go on for now. Not sure what's blocking completion. Looks like McAfee and/or AOL may be at work. Let's go after this with combofix.

Please visit this web page for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Also run DDS again and post those logs. Let me know how it's running too please.

All done and the browser is no longer redirecting (nor is the machine restarting) which is a good sign. ComboFix and DDS logs are attached - I will be working offsite through Monday so I won't be able to do anything more until Monday PM, but thank you for your help in this.

Okay looking better too.

AskBar.dll (Ask Toolbar) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_146646.htm

This software is not a virus or a Trojan. It is detected as a "potentially unwanted program" (PUP). PUPs are any piece of software that a reasonably security- or privacy-minded computer user may want to be informed of and, in some cases, remove. PUPs are often made by a legitimate corporate entity for some beneficial purpose, but they alter the security state of the computer on which they are installed, or the privacy posture of the user of the system, such that most users will want to be aware of them.
Ben Edelman http://blogs.zdnet.com/Spyware/?p=858

I discourage users from running Ask's toolbars for two reasons. First, Ask moves the browser's Address Bar from top-left (where it is found in every browser I've ever seen) to top-right. Ask puts its own search box in the top-left. So Ask's software makes it highly likely that users will accidentally conduct searches when they intend simply to navigate to sites they request by name.

Second, Ask's toolbar leads to landing pages that are objectionable in their own right. Ask's landing pages show ten ads - ten! - above the first organic result. On a 800×600 screen, that means 2 full pages of ads, plus a little bit more after that, all before the first organic result. That's ridiculous. No user deserves that, especially since organic results are safer than sponsored links.
It is advised that you uninstall this program to protect your privacy and computer security and to free up necessary resources. To uninstall the AskToolbar.
Click Start > Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Uninstall Programs.
In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Ask Toolbar , click Remove.
Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.

I was not able to find the Ask toolbar in the Add/Remove programs list of installed programs but I will keep an eye for it; I've attached the "attach" log which lists installed programs (I think) and it's not there.

The Malwarebytes program seems to find a clean bill of health as well.

Thank you for your assistance with this!

Well several remnants of the Ask Toolbar are showing. We can clean those out now.

1. Open Notepad

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

SkipFix::
Folder::
c:\program files\askbardis

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply: Combofix.txt A new DDS log. Just DDS.txt. .

Good training, and lots of practice. :D:

Have you had a chance to run MalwareBytes? If not please do so, making sure to update it first. Post the log if anything is found.

Also, please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html)

You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and click Accept

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

MalwareBytes came up clean on 6/07 (see log file : mbam-log-2010-06-07 (14-03-54).txt ).

Kaspersky (attached) flagged files but those directories scanned negative with MalwareBytes and McAfee.

Ahh yes, sorry missed that.

Kaspersky (attached) flagged files but those directories scanned negative with MalwareBytes and McAfee.
Kaspersky is very thorough, and not every scanner finds every infection. That's why running multiple scans gives us better assurance you're clean.

Do you still use Eudora for your email? As you can see from the Kaspersky scan you appear to have several infected emails and/or attachments. You will need to go through those and delete anything suspicious if found. If you don't use it then I'd suggest you uninstall it.

You have some Malware in your Java cache:

C:\Documents and Settings\Scott\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\ <<< clean your Java cache

*********************************

This one may be a false positive:

C:\Program Files\Free FLV Converter\FreeFLVConverter.exe

Please go to http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\Program Files\Free FLV Converter\FreeFLVConverter.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see. Or you can copy the link to the VT results page if that is easier.

**********************************

Uninstall Combofix

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.

The above procedure will:

Delete the following: ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
Reset the clock settings.
Hide file extensions, if required.
Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
Reset System Restore.

************************************

Download Security Check by screen317 from here (http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/SecurityCheck.exe) or here (http://screen317.changelog.fr/SecurityCheck.exe).
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Also let me know how it's running.

Cleaned anything doubtful out of the Eudora mailbox - unfortunately I do still use it.

I also found that the McAfee on-access scan has exclusions including the Eudora "spool" directory which may be part of the problem - I removed the Eudora exclusions.

Should I remove the rest?

Java Cache is cleared, and FreeFLVConverter & ComboFix are gone.

Security Check log is attached - it indicates that the on-access scan is disabled which isn't the case (up and going according to its "statistics" window).

Machine has been running flawlessly since last week - thank you!

Could have something to do with the fact it's an enterprise version??? If your system is reporting that all is well then you should be good.

Machine has been running flawlessly since last week - thank you!Another outstanding!!! :)

As you can see from the security report you also should update your Adobe Reader.
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?platform=windows&product=10

Other than that I think you're in pretty good shape.

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=49)

Install Winpatrol -
Use Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) to take control of your PC and provide another layer of security.
Help file and tutorial can be found Here (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Block unwanted parasites with a custom hosts file -
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Keep your applications up to date -
Use Secunia Personal Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) to help stay on top of application updates that could leave your PC vulnerable to attack.

I'll leave the thread open a few days in case you have questions or issues.

Regards,
Dave

I guess the last question would be about the exclusions that are still listed in McAfee On-Access Scan. Is there any reason to delete them? They are of the general form

%systemroot%\security\**\ etc.

%systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\Datastore\ etc.

Why those locations would be excluded in McAfee is beyond me??? Those are locations created my windows. One for updates, and the other security. Certainly won't hurt to just remove the exclusion. If issues arise then you could put them back, but I doubt it. Sorry I don't have something a little more concrete.
