View Full Version : error retrieving update info file, blocked websites, redirected, slow running
I think I got it all compiled in the title!
My computer is running slowly, some websites are completely blocked, some will load on the 5th or 6th time of refreshing, and some are fine. I get redirected occasionally from websites that have worked for me before. I cannot update my spybot info, and the website for updates is blocked, and my avast is being blocked from getting updated regularly too. I followed the instructions on the read this first thread and have disabled tea timer, downloaded erunt and dds, though I haven't removed dds as I can't seem to find it in my add and remove programs thing.
Here are the files I'm supposed to copy and paste:

Hi,
Download GMER (http://www.gmer.net) here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab, uncheck all but sections option and then click scan.
When scanning is ready, click Copy.
This copies log to clipboard
Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.
Mmk. With all options unchecked but sections I had two entries. However my computer bluescreened twice and froze up every other time I tried to copy to paste here. I tried rebooting and going here to paste and it wasn't in notepad anymore, but I cannot open anything to paste it to once I open GMER.
Until I complained about it. Tried it again so I could take pictures of my screen and it didn't lock me up this time

Hi again,
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.
Please continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:
C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
I read the guide carefully.
My computer skips teh backing up the registry looking pages, and skips straight to the scanning takes ten minutes or easily double. i never get the clock being changed notice, but it doesn't do anything. I left it for 9 hours today and when I got back that's the screen it was on. I tried to restart combofix and it shut my computer down, tried again and it's sitting at the scanning my computer screen again. I suppose I'll let it go ten hours and then whine some more :P
Did you disable protection first?
Yes, I turned off adaware and avast, i already turned spybots teatimer off. I was going to go uninstall combofix and try to reinstall it, but it's not showing up in my list, though when I click the shortcut on my desktop it starts up. This is seriously confusing me, would a wipe and reformat be the best option?
Hi,
Could you try to run ComboFix in safe mode after ensuring Avast is turned off?
I tried! I ran it in safemode, no networking, avast didn't even show up in my list of programs that i could turn on or off. It froze at the same point it had before. No clock change notice, and the clock didn't stop. I tried renaming it and it said it hated the name and changed it back (except it sounded more technical than that.) Then it blue-screened me and started me back up in regular mode. i vote chuck the whole laptop through a window. Thoughts?
Hi,
Start MBAM and let it update itself. Do a quick scan and remove the findings. Post back the report. Then do this:
Download OTL (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe) to your desktop.
Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Copy-paste following contents into custom scan -area:
netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
CREATERESTOREPOINT
%systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.
my malware bytes is old, and that website is one of the blocked ones. I cannot get updates to that one either. I tried running it anyway and it said the only problem was combofix.

Hi,
Do you have a router in use? If so, which brand and model?
Yes, Linksys wireless g broadband router
Hi,
You have to reset router settings to factory default state and then change default router password to stronger one. To do that you should press reset button for 30s there. Here (http://technicallyeasy.net/2008/01/how-to-reset-linksys-wrt54g-wireless/) is an example of one Linksys router reseting.
Ok, I reset my router to factory defaults following those instructions and changed the password.
Now what? =)
Please create test.bat and run it again. Post back log1.txt contents.

Hi,
That didn't work too well. Does the router have any other system connected to it than the one we've been working on?
the router and cable modem are both physically connected to my husband's computer. There is another computer wired into it, and mine is the only wireless one. Would deleting flash and redownloading it be of any help at all? I've noticed that my webpage redirection generally happens when there is an animated ad on the sidebar.
Hi,
Please do these (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=374276&postcount=18) steps on the other system and post back the log.

Good. Are there still any issues left?
Yes, it's all fixed! Thank you =D
You're welcome :)
Please find some final steps to take below.
THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
A To disable the System Restore feature:
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Hover over the Computer option, right click on it and then click Properties.
3. On the left hand side, click Advanced Settings.
4. If asked to permit the action, click on Allow.
5. Click on the System Protection tab.
6. Uncheck any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
7. Press OK.
B. Reboot.
C Turn ON System Restore.
Follow the steps like you did when disabling system restore but on step 6. check any checkboxes listed for your hard drives.
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK
Double-click OTL.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTL attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Run Secunia vulnerability check here (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) and fix its findings.
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade
I'm attempting all the updates but I think my modem is slowly dying. I've done the system restore change. I didn't mess with internet explorer because I never use it. I deleted the programs as instructed. I'm slowly updating everything else as my computer stays online for it. Thank you for all the help!
my microsoft is set to update automatically, yet I didn't get any updates for 3 months, is that just part of the ip address issue? It updated when I changed it, I should just leave it set on automatic updates right?
Hi,
my microsoft is set to update automatically, yet I didn't get any updates for 3 months, is that just part of the ip address issue?
Yes, Windows updates were blocked due to bad DNS settings. Having automatic updates enabled system will get important updates automatically.
Since this issue appears to be resolved ... this Topic has been closed. Glad I could help. :)
Note:If it has been three days or more since your last post, and the helper assisting you posted a response to that post to which you did not reply, your topic will not be reopened. At that point, if you still require help, please start a new topic and include a fresh DDS log and a link to your previous thread.
If it has been less than three days since your last response and you need the thread re-opened, please send me or other MOD a private message (pm). A valid, working link to the closed topic is required.
