I assume malware is responsible, but I am now stuck. IE was redirecting websites so I attempted to update Spybot. This failed. Went to spybot Website to verify it was up and I cannot connect.
I went to check hosts files, and all HOSTS and backups are gone. So this cannot be a problem, unless another HOSTS file is hidden. I checked registry and default location is defined for HOSTS so I am at a loss.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall spybot 1.6.2...but this fails w/o being able to connect to website.
I am at a loss.....
anyhelp will be appreciated, I am running XP and IE 7

Well, sine I did not receive any help here - thought I would give an update to what I found.
some sort of redirect malware was fixed using combofix. I was able to install and update Spybot. The bad news is Spybot STILL does not recognize this threat. After update and fresh immunize and scan - the problem returned.
I finally bit the bullet and installed Windows 7 Pro since XP was rather outdate. I installed and updated Spybot first thing. updated and scanned. After my first visit to MSN...the problem returned. Had to download and run combofix to clear again.
Hello simpkinst,
When a post was added to your topic before a helper responded it removed the zero reply they look for.

As it has been some time if you still need assistance please start a new topic and provide a link back to this one.
For future reference. :)
Please do NOT run 'FIXES' (ComboFix etc) without being asked (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=16806 )
Post here if still waiting for help in the Malware Forum, (AFTER) FOUR days (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=1137)
