For the past day I've had a problem with being redirected to "whattoseek" and other malicious sites when using Google search. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.

Thanks for your help so far. I've uninstalled the programs listed, although they've been installed on this computer for nearly 2 years now and this is the first time I've experienced any malware problems.

Step # 1: Disable Teatimer

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the version 1.5 or 1.6, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.


Step # 2: Download and Run ComboFix

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
  • Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Be sure to re-hide your files once you are finished cleaning your computer.

I've been experiencing redirects in both Firefox and IE. I also recieved a "File is empty (0 bytes)" message at both Jotti and Virus Total sites. Here's a new DDS log (combofix log is attached)

Step # 1 Remove old versions of Java

Older Java versions have vulnerabilities and need to be removed.

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).



Step # 4: Download and Run HAMeb_Check by noahdfear.

Download HAMeb_check.exe and save it to your Desktop

Run HAMeb_check.exe

Post the contents of the resulting log.



Step # 5 Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

Step # 3: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs

      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Great to hear that the redirects appear to have stopped. :)

Your DDS Log looks good and Kaspersky found a couple of infected System Restore points. They are harmless where they are. In an upcoming post, I'll show you how to remove them and set a new, clean one.

Go ahead and use your computer normally for the next couple of days to see if the redirects start again. If your computer is fine by Wednesday let me know, then we can start on the final touches of this thread. :) And let me know if the redirects come back before Wednesday.
 
Just letting you know that the redirects have started occuring again in both Firefox and IE, although less frequently than before.
 
Are these new redirects redireting to 'whatoseek' or are these redirects redirected to new/different websites?

That database for MalwareBytes' (4245) is out of date. The latest version is in the 4260's. Please run MBAM again and be sure to click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.


Delete CFScript.txt from your Desktop, you will be creating and running a new one.


Step # 1: Run CFScript

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please Note:

When ComboFix finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. ComboFix is capturing a file/files to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
