View Full Version : Virus Runs As iexplore.exe ; Full Screen Popup Ads ; Unwanted Sounds In Video Streams

I am unable to eradicate a virus / trojan / malware that is shown in Windows Task Manager as iexplore.exe even when Internet Explorer is not running.

Symptom: During video streaming from hulu.com using Opera 10 browser, an occasional unwanted sound is heard, such as "Congratulations! You're a winner!". No new window appears, just the sound. Using the Task Manager to kill the iexplore.exe process immediately silences the unwanted sound. It also adjusts the WAV volume control to the lowest, "off" position.

Symptom: At intervals (typically 20 minutes or so) while running the Opera 10 browser, a full-screen advertisement will appear in an Internet Explorer window.

Symptom: Settings for Windows are being modified without permission. The account login screen required a password when no password had been required previously. This was corrected using "run" "control userpasswords2" by deselecting "Users must enter a use name and password...". Outlook Express no longer recognizes existing email accounts (this has not been fixed).

Diagnostic Activity To Date: Spybot Search & Destroy, AdAware, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Superantispyware, Trojan Hunter. Some viruses and trojans were found and eliminated, only cookies are reported now. However, the problem with iexplore.exe remains.

After running DDS, there were two viral events:

21:56 -- IE Window opened, message "navigation cancelled"
22:11 -- Unwanted audio ad

Hi,

Download and install update 9.3.2 for Adobe Reader here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows).

Does the system still have those earlier described symptoms left?

George San Marcos
2010-06-28, 09:24
The Adobe Reader patch 9.3.2 was downloaded and installed successfully.

The system reboot was a disaster.

As the computer attempts to start, it gets to the "Loading Windows" display ... the screen flashes ... then the computer begins the booting process all over again.

I was able to get out of the reboot loop by pressing F8, then starting in "Safe Mode With Networking".

Whatever the Adobe patch did, it made things much worse. That means we're on the right track, I think. :red:

I have performed a System Restore to the restore point generated by ComboFix when it ran earlier today.

The reboot loop no longer occurs.

A check of Adobe Reader shows version 9.3.1 is now running instead of 9.3.2. There was a Windows box explaining that 9.3.1 was being "configured" when I started it. This configuration completed successfully.

Hi,

Do those other symptoms exist?

George San Marcos
2010-06-28, 10:19
Yes: Unwanted full-screen popup ads in IE7 windows still appear, unwanted audio ads still occur, iexplore.exe is still shown in the Windows Task Manager (Processes tab) even though Internet Explorer has not been started.

I'm keeping an incident log, showing five problems since the System Restore.

June 27, 2010
21:56 -- IE Window opened, message "navigation cancelled"
22:11 -- Unwanted audio ad
22:39 -- IE Window opened, "incomeWeb" advertisement
23:01 -- Adobe Reader 9.3.2 Update Installed
23:42 -- Activated ComboFix Restore Point to eliminate reboot loop. Adobe Reader 9.3.1 restored.
23:56 -- Unwanted audio ad

June 28, 2010
00:03 -- Unwanted audio ad
00:11 -- IE Window opened full screen, "Secret to Getting Ripped" ad
00:12 -- Unwanted audio ad
00:15 -- Unwanted audio ad

Hi,

1. Download Bootkit Remover (http://www.esagelab.com/files/bootkit_remover.rar) (note: it's a RAR archived file so you have to install compatible program, like 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) if there's not one installed).

2. Extract the contents to own folder (BRemover folder) on your desktop.

3. Click start->run->type cmd.exe and press enter.

4. In command prompt type this (I assume you extracted folder contents to BRemover folder on your desktop):

"%userprofile%\desktop\Bremover\remover.exe" >"%userprofile%\desktop\logit.txt"

5. Press enter once more to bring cursor back visible after entering the command above. After that operation there should be logit.txt file on your desktop. Attach it to your post, please.

There are two new symptoms that have appeared.

1. Windows won't shut down. "Start", "Turn Off Computer", "Turn Off" is ignored. CTRL-ALT-DEL, "Shut Down", "Turn Off" is also ignored. It is necessary to turn off the power to shut down the computer.

2. Windows now requires a password to log on ... sometimes. When a password is demanded, a normal reboot is performed. Sometimes it is necessary to reboot two times before the desktop appears.

Once the desktop appeared today, there was an immediate full-size advertisement in an IE window.

These symptoms are occurring before following instructions regarding the Bootkit remover.

Hi,

Is D: drive also operating system partition or perhaps external hard drive?

George San Marcos
2010-06-28, 20:48
There are two hard drives and one DVD Drive. All three of them are installed in the chassis and are not designed to be removable.

Strategy: Multiple partitions allow disk defragmentation to complete MUCH faster, plus it isolates the operating system from data files developed by programs and applications.

Originally, the factory-configured partition layout was:

Drive 1: C: E: F: G: (Note that D is used for the DVD drive)
Drive 2: H: I: J: K:
DVD: D:

Double-clicking on "My Computer" now reports:

Drive 1: C: D: E: F: (note that D is now on Drive 1)
Drive 2: G: H: I: J:
DVD: K:

Right-Clicking on "My Computer", then selecting the "System Restore" tab shows:

C: E: F: G: D: H: I: J:

Hi,

1. Restart your computer
2. Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start
3. Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4. You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press enter.
5. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter (answer yes to confirmation):

fixmbr

6. At the next prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:

exit

Windows will now begin loading. Run ComboFix (let it update itself) and post back the report + fresh dds log.

George San Marcos
2010-06-28, 23:53
When the machine was backed-up to the restore point created by ComboFix, it eliminated the installation of the Microsoft Recovery Console that occurred afterwards.

The ComboFix instructions say the manual method of installing the Recovery Console requires the downloaded file to be drag-and-dropped onto ComboFix. But your instructions say to run the Recovery Console and fixmbr /before/ running ComboFix.

If it was my decision, I would:
a) Run ComboFix to install the Recovery Console
b) Follow the instructions to fix the master boot record
c) Follow the instructions to run ComboFix (again) and DDS

However, given all of the warnings and disclaimers about ComboFix I've decided to wait for further direction from you.

Please advise me on the steps to follow to reinstall the Recovery Console. I appreciate your understanding!

Hi,

Please follow the instructions in post #10 (http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=375757&postcount=10) again.

Issues still showing up?

There has been no unwanted audio ads and no full-screen ad windows during the last six hours of operation. Functions checked include video streaming, audio streaming, and the playing of local audio files. It would appear that fixing the master boot record cleared the problem on the primary drive.

Should I worry about the "unknown boot code" on the secondary drive?

Unknown boot code has been found on some of your physical disks.
To inspect the boot code manually, dump the master boot sector:
remover.exe dump <device_name> [output_file]
To disinfect the master boot sector, use the following command:
remover.exe fix <device_name>

Press any key to quit...

Hi,

Should I worry about the "unknown boot code" on the secondary drive?
No need to worry since that drive doesn't have operating system on it.

Download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) and fix its findings.

Let me know if there're still issues left.

It looks like the problem has been solved, there have been no issues with unwanted audio ads or full-screen pop-up ads in Internet Explorer windows since the master boot record was fixed.

Applications identified by Secunia in Simple Mode have all been updated to the most recent revision level. In the Advanced Mode, there are still issues with PHP (which is not usually running), Apache (not running), and an old installation of iTunes. iTunes is a finicky program: updates and changes in the past have resulted in corrupted and missing files, so I'll leave the old version installed but won't use it. The newly installed version of iTunes is missing my playlists and will require some file imports to be usable, but I can handle that.

The only remaining issue -- and I don't think it's related to the original problem -- is that Opera 10 won't allow me to log in to this forum. I'm assuming it's an application error, not a virus / trojan / malware issue. Fortunately, I've got IE7 available as a backup browser for just such an occasion.

Thank you for your calm, patient, capable help!!! This problem really had me at my wit's end.

You're welcome :)

Have you tried to reinstall Opera to see if it fixes the problem? Clearing its browser cache might also help.

Here are some final steps to follow.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

Please download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html) or Comodo Firewall Pro (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html#fw3.0) (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation Install Comodo HopSurf.., Make Comodo my default search provider and Make Comodo Search my homepage and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Opera Browser: Version 10.54 was repaired twice. After the first repair, website forms worked for awhile, then quit. After the second repair, website forms did not work. Version 10.53 was installed, forms did not work with this version, either. Opera has been removed from the computer.

System Restore was disabled, the system restarted, and re-enabled.

ComboFix removed successfully.

OTC ran successfully.

Windows Update installed .net framework.

IE7 will be hardened later today.

Yes, I maintain a hosts file -- the malware erased it. I'll check the download!!

Firewall is running.

I generally avoid updates since they tend to introduce new bugs (er ... um ... "features") that require new work-arounds. However, I will check update sites on a regular basis. Secunia is still resident and checking files.

There are still some minor annoyances ... TV shows on hulu.com freeze every 90 seconds or so while the download catches up. This is probably a connection problem. There is also a rare situation in which an audio stream goes quiet for 30 seconds or so and them resumes. This is also probably a connection problem.

All in all, I think we are done. You have done a masterful job!!!! :present: Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
