View Full Version : Vario Antivirus Removal

Hi people.
Need some help here. Spybot recently detected Vario Antivirus on my laptop, apparently it corrupted the spoolsv.exe file, cos that was what the Spybot popup indicated. I have since replaced the spoolsv.exe file with one that is not infected - this resulted in a reduced usage of RAM from 30,000mb+ to 6,000mb+, so I would say that it has worked.
However, I'm still not sure whether it's fully clean, though a scan via TrendMicro and Spybot showed it to be clean (note: prior to replacement of the corrupted file, Spybot also showed my laptop to be clean).
So here's me asking for advice, anyone? My hijackthis log:

Hi,
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com) or here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr) or here (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
DDS.txt
Attach.txt
Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

After that:
Get update 9.3.3 for Adobe Reader here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here (http://pdfreaders.org/).
Uninstall Macromedia shockwave player and get the fresh one here (http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/) if needed.
Uninstall vulnerable Flash versions by following instructions here (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html). Fresh version can be obtained here (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/).

I also attached the Attach.zip.
Once again, thanks for your help and your patience, Blade! Much appreciated =)
Hi,
Delete files in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine folder.
How's the system running now?
seifersgp
2010-07-05, 17:27
Hey Blade, have deleted those files from the stated folder.
I'm scanning that laptop with TrendMicro, then later Symantec and then Kaspersky. Will get back to you on that.
So far the system has been working fine, I'm just worried that there might be keyloggers lurking in the background...what's your opinion on that?
Hi,
Couldn't spot keyloggers there. Any reason to suspect one?

Hi Blade.
I was suspecting a keylogger cos it was one of Vario's 'capabilities'. Though I replaced the 'infected' spoolsv.exe file with a supposedly clean one, I wasn't sure whether the whole system is clean...but I guess it now is?
It's running Kaspersky scan now (it takes a long while); Trend Micro and Symantec both showed it to be clean.
There's one thing though: Immunization is now unable to be complete; I have been getting incomplete immunizations, not sure whether it was because I installed SpywareBlaster...
Hi,
Let's do a scan with MBAM too:
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file in your next reply.
There's one thing though: Immunization is now unable to be complete; I have been getting incomplete immunizations, not sure whether it was because I installed SpywareBlaster... You could uninstall SpywareBlaster to see if it has any effect.

Hi Blade thanks for your time and for following up..really appreciate it.
Immunization is now complete after a restart. Guess there wasn't any conflict with SpywareBlaster.
Kaspersky scan showed 2 threats:

Should I click "Remove Selected" from the MBAM scan for that SecurityCenter thingy?
Other than that, everything seems ok to me now...is it?
Good. You may ignore those two Kaspersky findings.
Should I click "Remove Selected" from the MBAM scan for that SecurityCenter thingy?
Yes, let it fix that.
Some final steps next.
THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK
Please download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) and save it to desktop.
Double-click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
Select Yes when the
Begin cleanup Process?
prompt appears.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Run Secunia vulnerability check here (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/) and fix its findings.
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade

Hi Blade.
Sorry I took some time to reply again, was swamped with work.
I have done as you suggested and cleaned up the stuff...but it doesn't detect ComboFix..I think I didn't install it? Not too sure, hope I didn't miss anything out!
Secunia's so cool. I updated everything though now it says 1 error with regards to not being able to check for Windows Update. I checked the website and installed the latest one, but that error still shows.
TrendMicro, Spybot and Symantec shows my laptop to be clean. I have also installed the Hosts file, didn't know there was something like that; that rocks!
Sometimes I guess I didn't update certain stuff cos I'm not sure whether it's a scam or fraud..it does happen, right? How will I know which are the genuine update prompts?
Once again, thank you for your help and your invaluable advice!
but it doesn't detect ComboFix..I think I didn't install it?
Sorry for that. It was probably this hot weather here that made me list that in the final steps

What is the exact error message shown there?

It should be a yellow shield with exclamation mark on it that shows if important updates are available. If you're not sure visit Windows Update and check if there're any important updates available.

Hmm oh yeah it's summer over there now isn't it? Man..is it like, sweltering? Here on the equator it's humid and hot..ugh.
The error message shown is:
"An error occurred while searching for missing Windows updates."
I'm not exactly sure what that means...cos other than that everything seems fine...
And oh regarding the updates, what about other updates, like Adobe and stuff..is there a way for me to tell they are genuine?
Hmm oh yeah it's summer over there now isn't it? Man..is it like, sweltering? Here on the equator it's humid and hot..ugh.
Yep, we got pretty nice weather here at the moment, avg temperature +30 celcius :) Usual summertime avg temperatures are about +20 celcius.
The error message shown is:
"An error occurred while searching for missing Windows updates."
It could be that firewall is blocking some access. Are you able to access Windows Update service?
And oh regarding the updates, what about other updates, like Adobe and stuff..is there a way for me to tell they are genuine?
I haven't seen those faked. You should run Secunia's vulnerability check at times and fix its findings. There's also a downloadable version available here (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/).

=) No problems accessing, downloading and installing Windows Update. As of now, everything is updated.
Thanks so much for your help, Blade, really appreciate it!
Just a final confirmation, would these be sufficient for my laptop?
- TrendMicro Antivirus (pre-installed)
- Symantec Antivirus
- Spybot S&D
- MalwareBytes AntiMalware
- Spyware Blaster
And for my new PC?
- Spybot S&D
- MalwareBytes AntiMalware
- Spyware Blaster
Should I get AVG or some other antivirus for the new PC to protect it?
You're welcome :)
Just a final confirmation, would these be sufficient for my laptop?
- TrendMicro Antivirus (pre-installed)
- Symantec Antivirus
- Spybot S&D
- MalwareBytes AntiMalware
- Spyware Blaster
Leave only TrendMicro or Symantec installed. If one's license is expired then uninstall that. Otherwise looks good.
And for my new PC?
- Spybot S&D
- MalwareBytes AntiMalware
- Spyware Blaster
You should install antivirus program there. Among AVG good free antivirus programs are:
Antivir (http://free-av.com/en/download/1/download_avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html) and
Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)
Good commercial ones are from:
Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/homeuser) and
ESET (http://www.eset.com/products/index.php)

Hi Blade.
Thanks for your advice. I have installed AntiVir on the new PC..let's hope that THAT PC won't face problems in its entire life..haha!
I have a question: recently I have been experiencing problems surfing the net, with the common error "Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage", and when I looked at the "More Information" it mentions some causes, one of which is the DNS client. Could it be something to do with the hosts file, and how could I resolve that? Sorry for bothering you still..
Hi,
Sent the website address to me via private message (http://forums.spybot.info/private.php) and I'll see if it could be hosts affected.

Hi Blade.
The websites are typical pages like local msn pages for video and Facebook...could it be the ISP?
Hi,
You could see if it's hosts related thing:
Download the HostsXpert (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Hoster_d4626.html).
* Unzip HostsXpert to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert
* Click HostsXpert.exe to Run HostsXpert from its new home
* Click
Make Hosts Writable?
in the upper right corner (If available).
* Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts file and then click OK.
* Click the X to exit the program.
* Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.
That restores hosts file to default one.

Hi Blade.
I'm so sorry about this very late reply. Been busy with work lately, didn't have the chance to try out the solution.
As it were, the Facebook pages seem to be loading normally now, at least for the time being. I believe it could be a problem with my ISP, but I'll try the HostXpert thingy if it crops up again. Does this mean that I shouldn't / cannot use the Hosts file that was recommended?
Hi,
Hosts file shouldn't block legit Facebook related sites so it's possible your earlier issue was just ISP related hiccup.

Hi Blade.
I really appreciate all the help and advice you've given me these few weeks...
So far, no other problems experienced by my PC / laptop. I guess we could close this case now. Once again, thanks so much for your time! =) :bigthumb:
