Downloader Virus Alert

Hey Guys,

My Norton recently found a virus on my computer during a system scan. There were two infected files:

windows/system32/jkklm.exe
windows/system32/ias_32.dll

Norton quarantined and deleted the jkklm.exe file, but can't do anything with the ias_32 file. I've tried deleting it in safe mode and DOS mode, but each time it says that the file is being used in another process.

Now an alert that the ias_32 file is infected pops up every few minutes. Can anyone help me clean up this virus? Thanks very much in advance.

Hello and welcome to the forum. If you are not being helped elsewhere and still need help, let's try this first.

My suggestion would be to uninstall this program:

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK. Rehind those files when we are finished.

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with any comments you think will help. How is the computer running now?

first off - pskelley, thanks very much for taking the time to help me with this. it was driving me nuts and i really had run out of ideas on what to do.

i ran through the steps, and my most recent norton scan detected NO VIRUSES.

the only small complication seems to be one of those windows error upon restart that prompts a "send report" or "don't send report" popup. in this case, it's about windowslogon.exe. everything else seems to be running fine. attached below is my new HJT log. if you have an idea as to how i would get rid of this new error, it'd be great. thanks again.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Now to discuss that issue. Are you saying it is a message from Microsoft or Windows that is saying something happened and it wants to know if you want to send a report? I get those myself once in a while, usually cause by the fact I am always in a hurry and I don't let me browser (IE) complete one task before starting another. Sometimes IE starts opening multiple windows and I have to manually turn off the computer to stop it. If this is the message you are getting, you need to send the report and wait. You will receive a response telling you what to do to stop it from happening.
At least that is the way it works for me. If that does not give you the information you need, I suggest you contact Microsoft for help with the problem.

I usually wind up emailing them and after a few days get a case number assigned and they will help you work through the issue if you are patient.
