View Full Version : A few nasty trojans and a google hijacker

nWo4life
2010-07-13, 06:10
As the title says, I believe I have all of those. The trojans have turned up multiple times in scans with Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and IObit Security 360, and while I do remove them, they usually end up coming right back. Also, when clicking on links produced by Google, they usually end up getting redirected to various advertising sites. And, while using Firefox, it will occasionally create a new tab, but it always Google.com, which doesn't make much sense. As requested, I have turned off TeaTimer and backed up my registry with ERUNT. Here are the requested logs:

Hi nWo4life

Please post next spybot and malwarebytes report :)

nWo4life
2010-07-18, 10:09
Since there isn't a good way to post a log of the Spybot results, I will just say that it turned up "Microsoft.WindowsSecurity Center_disabled" (1 entry, Security), but I disabled the Security Center because I read that disabling it is OK if you have other AntiVirus software installed, especially because Security Center can be a system resource hog. Spybot also turned up "Win32.PornPopUp" (25 Entries, Browser). As noted before, I have had popups in Firefox that will start their own tab, but they're just advertising websites or "google.php". The Malwarebytes log is listed below:

There is and it can be found from FAQ :) However, that information is enough.

Did you let MBAM remove what it found? According to log you didn't.

Sorry, I didn't let MBAM remove the stuff. I didnt know you wanted me to; I just thought I should post the results. However, I will rescan with both of them and remove everything.

After scanning with both programs a second time, the Spybot results were the same, and I let it clean the "Win32.PornPopUp". However, the MBAM results were different. I let it clean everything in the following log:

We will continue with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
If you need help to disable your protection programs see here. (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

During the scan with ComboFix, there was an error and a blue screen came up which read "Windows has been shut down in order to prevent damage to your computer", and so the scan was not able to be completed. I assume that this is not good at all; what should I do now?

Does computer boot normally?

If so, please rerun combofix in safe mode :)

Good :)

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Sorry for the slight delay in response. Anyway, I have had a problem with Java on my computer for quite some time and I don't know what is wrong with it. I installed it off of their website, but it still wont work. It always gives me an error and fails to load. I went through the recommended methods to make sure that Java is enabled and that it is configured for use in Firefox, and believe it to be enabled, but it still will not work.

In that case it is better to contact Sun for Java issue.

Download to the desktop: Dr.Web CureIt (ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe)

Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

The scans took quite some time, and I had to pause in between a couple times. The first bit of information is the Dr. Web log, which saved as an excel file. I tried opening it in Notepad, but it still looked as it does below. The HJT log is also below.

Good :)

Any issues left?

No more google redirection links and the computer has been much faster, but there is now one new, minor issue. Ever since I did all of these things that you asked me to do, Qttask.exe has been using roughly 50% of my CPU everytime someone logs onto the computer. I usually just go into the Task Manager and delete the process and then the computer is fine. Any idea why this might happen? I know Qttask is associated with Quicktime, but nothing else.

Do you want me to give instructions how to disable it from startup?

Please do that, thank you. I feel as though I may know how to do it in Spybot S&D, but I don't want to do something wrong.

Sorry for ultimate delay but I didn't get email notification from this one.

We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:

1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
6. Restart your computer.

This should do it.
