 I have been running Spybot S&D for years but a week or so ago I could not update the software. I thought it was a bug so I un-installed the software & downloaded a new version & tried to install this. However it will not install because it cannot connect to the server (the problem I had with updating previously) I have tried going to the Safer-Networking website & neither Chrome or Explorer will load the page.
I have scanned my system with AVG v9 Internet Security Suite & I am running Windows 7.
Also when I click the link on this forum site to go to support or download I get the same message as not being able to find the page?

Can anybody help me get Spybot back & running?

Thanks in anticipation

ps please treat me as an idiot because it has taken me ages to work out how to post this new thread?

Hello,

Sounds like an infection.

Please download the Installation file (http://www.spybotupdates.com/files/spybotsd162.exe) and the Update file (http://www.spybotupdates.com/updates/files/spybotsd_includes.exe) on another computer,
copy these to a CD or USB stick and then install and run it on the infected computer.

Best regards

Sandra
Thank you for replying.

I have tried to do what you suggested. I have copied both files to the Spybot folder and tried to install the exe but when I click install i get the following message

error sending request
the server name could not be resolved

I try retry but it does not work so when I click cancel it does not complete the install?

thanks

Hello,

During the installation Spybot tries to download the updates.
You can disable this function in the wizard itself.
Just untick the checkbox in front of "download updates during installation" or "Download Updates immediately".
The updates can be downloaded later on.

For more information on updating please have a look at this link (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/update.html) on our website.
You can also download the updates manually (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html).
Here is the direct download link (http://www.spybotupdates.com/updates/files/spybotsd_includes.exe).
Just download and run that file - it is self-installing.

:thanks: Sandra

I have managed to install Spybot S & D and I have managed to run the other file spybotsd_includes from when you told me to download from another computer. The reason for this is your two links do not work the one that takes me to the website & the one about manual updates?
The direct download link did work although it is the same as the one you told me about earlier.
I ran Spybot S&D straight away & it only took 4 seconds (normally takes about 15mins) but found 7 things which it has deleted. I closed it down then re-opened it and it now seems to be scanning correctly ie checking against 1249448 threats.
However I still cannot get it to update using the search for updates button in the main window or the updates button on the left?

My son also has Spybot S&D on his laptop & he cannot get updates either? He uses Firefox & Windows 7 & we use Talktalk is there a problem with the website?

Hello,

If you did run the includes then you probably do have the latest updates yet.
Please make sure that you are running the latest version of Spybot - Search & Destroy including the latest updates.

To see which version number and/or updates of Spybot - Search & Destroy you are using please run Spybot-S&D and choose "Help" --> "About" in the menu bar.
There you can see which version you have and which updates are installed.
It should be version 1.6.2 and the updates from the 2010/07/14.

Please run Spybot - Search & Destroy and switch to "Advanced mode" via the menu bar item "Mode" and select "Settings" --> "File Sets" in the left bar. There, please right-click somewhere into the list and choose "select all available checks".

:thanks: Sandra

I ran Spybot S&D last night as previously said it found something I could only get rid of in administrator mode, (I did not realise I had to right click to get this) anyway got rid of the problem then ran AVG again.
This morning I tried to go to the updates and it is now working as it should.
Thanks for your help :)

I have done what you suggested here about enabling all checks so hopefully I will not get anymore problems.

Thanks again for your help
