View Full Version : Help getting rid of a "Fake.Wget"

Every time I scan with spybot s&d it comes back with "Fake.Wget --- 2 Items" in the registry... I remove them with spybot (and I have also tried some other spyware removing softwares) and they appear to be gone... But then without fail after a reboot or a 'log off/log on' the darned "Fake.Wget" files are right back in place...
If I remove them and then restart in safe mode they do not come back (ie. they're not there). But if I restart in safe mode without removing them they are there. So I'm guessing there must be some program that starts up in normal mode (but not in safe mode) that finds the files missing and puts them back... But I'll be darned if I can figure out what program it might be...
So I'm very humbly asking for some help...:blush: Pease

Hello and welcome to the forum. Keep in mind we are all volunteers and there are many more logs than we can ever get to. tashi has set up this link if four days go by without help:

I have no idea what a Fake.Wget is and Google: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=Fake%2EWget does not know much more. While I am researching the item, I would like you to do this:
1) Post only the logs I ask for, in normal mode and with everything enabled in MSConfig.
2) This item I believe is a problem:

in fact I am 99% sure of it. To be 100% sure, use one or more of these free online scans and post the results for me. You are scanning the file highlited in red.

Before we start, this item: O9 - Extra button: Run DAP - {669695BC-A811-4A9D-8CDF-BA8C795F261C} - C:\PROGRA~1\DAP\DAP.EXE says it is DAP but when I scan it I get this:
http://www.castlecops.com/clsid-30021.html and I will remove it. My suggestion would be to remove DAP from your computer. In my opinion, download accelators are just not needed for Windows XP and they just do not increase performance for the resources they use. You can rid yourself of it in Add Remove programs.
While you are in Add Remove programs, please look closely and remove anything you know does not belong there. If you are unsure about anything, let me know and I will look.
Your Java program is C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\ <<< out of date, current version is jre1.5.0_07. It is important to keep Java up to date, hackers are using that program to infect computers, see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
We will kill that bad item and do some good cleaning to see what happens. Let's do this in the posted order, and if questions come up, please do post them.
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Careful here: the valid explorer.exe is in C:\Windows\ and we want to kill the one in the System32 folder.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\explorer..exe <<< delete that file
5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with your comments, how are you running.
As soon as you have the HJT log posted, I would like you to download a free version of ewido, update and then run a complete system scan. Post the ewido scan results as soon as you have them.
First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

I've done everything you've suggested except the safe mode system scan with "ewido anti-spyware" .. I'll do that right after I post this... (This is in the order you stated) .. I've uninstalled DAP, updated Java (you mentioned jre1.5.0_07 was the newest version.. All I could get was _06 with the Java update file 'jucheck.exe' ..???)

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Just wanted to say thanks for all the help just one more time.. It's folks like you who help folks like me hold on to the little bit of hope that there are still some truly kind and caring people out there... In closing just wanted to let you know that I'll try again in a day or two to see if I can't find the Java update your talking about. Also I flushed the system restore as you suggested.
Over the next few days I'm going to make sure I give a look to the links you provided...

When I got home from work today I did another scan with ewido and it found one tracking cookie.. I got rid of it as the program suggested. Then I did a scan with Ad-Aware and it cam back with this (below is a copy of the log file)..

I deleted the two items with Ad-Aware, rebooted and did another scan with Ad-Aware. This time it found nothing. So I'm guessing that problem is fixed..
I have no idea where those two registry keys came from... Since you helped me clean things up yesterday I have not used this computer for anything. I have not installed anything on it other than ewido since I last posted here.. (Do you think it could be a false positive ?)

Well when I opened MSConfig and clicked on the services tab I noticed that one of the services called 'Symantec Internet Security' was shown as being 'Stopped'.. It has a check in the box text to it but it still says that it is 'stopped'.. Is this okay ? The reason I ask is. A week or so ago I got a virus that disabled my Norton Internet Security 2006.. I cleaned up that problem and un-installed then re-installed NIS 2006 and it seems to be working fine.. I'm just a little bit concerned about the 'Symantec Internet Security' thing in the services tab...???? Do you think it's something to worry about. Or are things the way they should be??

Thanks for that information, it is very possible the entries were left from what we removed, it seems to be near impossible to get all of the junk that comes with the infection, if we kill it and what causes it to work, we have done good. Keep an eye on things for a few days, get into the information I provided, and I really suggest you consider these programs which are free:
