Hello, I recently ran a Spybot scan this morning and it says that I have a Virtumonde infection. My computer hasn't shown any signs of infection other than running a bit slower than normal. I ran ERUNT and the DSS tool and attached the zipped attachment. Thank you for your help!

Here's the DSS text:

Ok, that might be a false positive.

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Please click this link-->Jotti (http://virusscan.jotti.org/)

Copy/paste file on the list into the white Upload a file box and click Submit/Send (depends on which one you are using Jotti or VirusTotal).

C:\Program Files\AIM6\addressBook.exe

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

I'm not exactly sure which file you mean --

C:\Program Files\AIM6\addressBook.exe

or

Filename: a.x

I guess I don't really recognize either. I know that we have AOL instant messenger 6, and I assume that the address book holds the contacts. I don't really use it much though.

Please then rescan that file to see if it has been false positive and possibly fixed.

Sorry it's been a while since I last replied, I've been away from home.

Here are the results from scanning the addressBook.exe file -- I'm not sure why it showed up in the first scan as a.x though.

Have you installed AIM yourself?

Mdolph15

Actually, no, I don't recall installing it. I assumed my wife had installed it at some point, but I asked her and she doesn't recall installing it either. It could have been something that was installed in conjunction with something else -- sort of like Adobe does with McAfee or something. Not too sure I guess.

Then it is better to play safe and install it. Delete folder afterwards as well.

Does spybot still find something?

I guess I'm not entirely positive what you mean. Do you want me to install AIM, or do you mean that I should uninstall it?

Sorry I meant uninstalling it to play safe.

I tried uninstalling AIM and then ran Spybot again and Virtumonde still showed up.

I assume now that you have made a registry backup with ERUNT as instructed in before you post. If not, please do it now.

Open Notepad and copy the contents of the following box to a new file.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-540961431-1912937874-3570792479-1006\Software\Microsoft\fias4031]

Save it as fix.reg (save type: "All files" (*.*)) to your desktop.

It should look like this -> http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/reg.gif

Go to Desktop, double-click fix.reg and merge the infomation with the registry.

Reboot, rerun spybot and tell me what it finds now.

That seemed to have worked - I ran a spybot scan after the steps in your last post and it said that no immediate threats were found. So, are you thinking that this was a false positive? It seemed like you'd thought that earlier.

Anyways, thank you for all your help.

Likely not.

Are you ready for final instructions?
