View Full Version : SpyBot no longer works
My home PC appears to be infected. Various symptoms, including unexpected slowdowns, links from Google searcch results get re-directed (this has just recently started happening), and most worryingly Spybot S&D stopped working.
First some confessions:
1) I have had some problems with different anti-virus and anti-spyware program conflicts. So I MAY have disabled TeaTimer at some point (not sure if this is relevant).
2) In trying to resolve the problems I uninstalled and re-installed Spybot S&D (1.6.2) only to find that the spybotsd.exe does not get installed (I have tried the fixes suggested elsewhere in this forum)
3) I MAY have run some fixes - before I read your instructions to NOT do this. Even worse, I can't recall which ones I might have run - but I don't think I ran ComboFix (I am doubly stupid I know).
4) I definitely tried running some other anti-spyware software, including Spyware Terminator, which has not solved the problem.
I attach the DDS log as requested.
I will try and blame this on my 10 year old son and his friends, but I know deep down it is my own fault for not properly protecting the computer.
Hope you can help me.
Many thanks

Hi,
Please post attach.txt contents too.
Hi
Attach.txt as requested.
btw, I noticed that in my static IP configuration the DNS servers were:
93.188.164.72
93.188.168.222
I assume these were set by the malware because I definitely didn't do it. I also found I could not connect to "http://www.safer-networking.org" until I changed the DNS settings back to my usual ones.
Many thanks

Hi,
btw, I noticed that in my static IP configuration the DNS servers were:
93.188.164.72
93.188.168.222
I assume these were set by the malware because I definitely didn't do it.
Yep. Those are malware doings.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Hi,
Delete these files if found:
C:\Documents and Settings\epdjd\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\26\6973d79a-29c1a907
C:\Documents and Settings\epdjd\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\29\48375f5d-414c928e
C:\Documents and Settings\epdjd\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\46\254ef42e-4eeced1e
C:\Documents and Settings\epdjd\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\60\e8267fc-1171e397
Still issues left?
Hi
I have deleted those files (I note there are many more similar ones in the C:\Documents and Settings\epdjd\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0).
BUT....
my problems remain - the browser redirect is still in effect, and I am still blocked from reinstalling Spybot S&D (when the .exe file is missing from C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy).
Hi,
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.
Please continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:
C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
Hello again
1) I downloaded and ran ComboFix. Please note I had to rename it to get it to run (hence the log file header says "Running from: c:\documents and settings\epdjd\Desktop\dcfx.exe"). Apart from that it performed as desribed. Here is the log:

Many thanks.
Hi,
Do the issues still occur?
Hi Blade81
Very happy to say that the problems seems to have been resolved.
I have re-installed Spybot S&D with no issues.
Also installed AVAST Free Antivirus and ran a full scan. This reported a number of infected files. Unfortunately I had not configured the log file output so I could only recover an XML version of the log, which I attach below in case it is of any use. I suspect that these files are the remnants from the earlier disinfection procedures that we have been trying? They have been moved to 'The Chest' by AVAST Free Antivirus just in case.

After I did this I re-ran a full AVAST scan and it found nothing suspicious. Likewise with Spybot S&D.
Thanks very much for all your help. It has been a very interesting experience. Now to make a donation....
With best wishes.
Good. Please find some final steps below :)
THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) and fix its findings.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html) or Comodo Firewall Pro (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html#fw3.0) (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation Install Comodo HopSurf.., Make Comodo my default search provider and Make Comodo Search my homepage and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade
Blade, Hi
I have done the following as instructed:
1) reset system restore points (I had been wondering what to do with all those old infected restore points)
2) uninstalled Combifix
3) download and ran OTC.exe
4) tweaked security settings in Internet Explorer as per instructions
5) used the HOSTS file from MVPS.ORG. I have set the DNS Client service to start manually.
6) download and ran Secunia PSI. I was able to fix all but one of the Insecure Programs - Java JRE 1.3.x. The suggested fix was to install Java V6 Update 20. However I already have Update 21 installed as part of the earlier clean-up, and after installing Update 20, Secunia PSI continues to complain about Java JRE 1.3.x. Not sure what to do about that. Should I uninstall Update 20?
7) installed Online Armor Free firewall.
8) updated the Windows Update tool by visiting Microsoft's Windows Update Site.
That's it. As well as Spybot S&D, Avast! Antivirus Free, and now Online Armor Free, I am also running AdAware Free Internet Security (that's the only one you have not recommended so would be interested to know if you think it is worth having).
I am away from my PC for a few days after tomorrow but will let you know how I get on.
Many many thanks once again - it's been a real education.
Dan

Not related to latest Java version. Seems that someone else has had same issue too (link (http://secunia.com/advisories/product/87/)). Please check file path for that affected finding (instructions behind the link (http://secunia.com/advisories/product/87/)).
I am also running AdAware Free Internet Security (that's the only one you have not recommended so would be interested to know if you think it is worth having).
My list usually contains only those that are not installed already. Ad-Aware is good program too :)

Thanks for the link - the offending file was in the program directory for an old game I had installed. Now uninstalled and the problems is gone. Looks like all is good now.
Thanks again Blade.
