View Full Version : Browser Redirecting, Tracking Cookies, Can't fix

Jim Clark
2010-09-25, 22:11
Hi,

I've tried everything I know how to do. Browser redirects are my main problem. I am also showing tracking cookies when I run SuperAntiSpyware. Spybot S&D had removed some tracking cookies, however, it looks like these are still popping up.

I used to run multiple firefox profiles, but I've deleted all but two of these.

Earlier this week, Microsoft OneCare was able to detect Trojan:win32/Hiloti.gen!D. This may or may not be gone now.

Yesterday I uninstalled OneCare and installed Microsoft Security Essentials.

In the DDS post below, I have removed some usernames and URL's using asterisks *******. These are manual edits.

Here is my DDS log

I've left TeaTimer running until I make the fixes. I really appreciate the help.

============= FINISH: 14:49:51.78 ===============

I just noticed something else a little funny.... when I download files, it automatically goes into the Downloads folder... despite that my Firefox settings is "Ask me where to save files". Something is overriding this setting. This was not happening before the infection.

Hello and :welcome: to Safer Networking

My name is peku006 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

Please observe these rules while we work:

If you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to ask
Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
DO NOT attach logs unless requested to. Please copy/paste all requested logs into your replies.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

Please Download Rootkit Unhooker (http://www.rootkit.com/vault/DiabloNova/RKUnhookerLE.EXE) Save it to your desktop.
Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?

Thanks peku006

Thanks for getting back to me.

I think I did this correctly, but I'm not sure... it prompted me to scan the C drive halfway through the scan, I clicked cancel, and it continued scanning.

Here are the scan results

Hi Jim Clark

Download GooredFix from one of the locations below & save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1 (http://jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/GooredFix.exe)
Download Mirror #2 (http://downloads.securitycadets.com/GooredFix.exe)
Ensure all Firefox windows are closed
To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click & select Run As Administrator (Vista)
When prompted to run the scan, click Yes
GooredFix will check for infections, then a log will appear. Post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt)

Thanks peku006

Hi Jim Clark

TDSSKiller - Rootkit Removal Tool

Please download the TDSSKiller.exe (http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe) by Kaspersky... save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista - W7 users: Right-click and select "Run As Administrator".
If TDSSKiller does not run... rename it. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. ektfhtw.com).
If you don't see file extensions, please see: How to change the file extension (http://www.mediacollege.com/microsoft/windows/extension-change.html).
Click the Start Scan button. Do not use the computer during the scan!
If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
If malicious objects are found, they will show in the "Scan results - Select action for found objects" and offer 3 options.
Ensure Cure (default) is selected... then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Thanks peku006

Thanks. Here is my combofix log. I manually edited out some usernames and url's using asterisks ******.

I noticed that when combofix was done, an Internet Explorer icon was placed on my desktop (I didn't have one there before), and Firefox was no longer set to my default browser - or at least, it prompted me to make it default again.

The computer didn't restart after running combofix... I thought I read somewhere that it would.

Here is my log. Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi Jim Clark

You still have "Browser redirects" ?

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Select the Update tab
Click Check for Updates
After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.
If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
We will take care of the System Volume Information items later.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please reply with

the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log

Thanks peku006

Since I ran ComboFix, I haven't noticed any browser redirects. However, I was having them last night.

A few days ago I started using the encrypted version of Google search, because it wouldn't redirect from there

After running ComboFix, I did a few test searches on the regular Google, with no problems

I'm running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware now... I'll post the log when it's done.

Hi,

Thanks again. I'm not sure I did this correctly, because I didn't understand this step:

Back at the main Scanner screen:

1. Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
2. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
We will take care of the System Volume Information items later.

I didn't see a "Show Results" button. If you need me to rescan, let me know. However, this is the log that was produced:

Hi

If you need me to rescan, let me know
it is not necessary.........Looking good :)
Let's make sure we got everything

ESET online scannner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Hold down Control then click on the following link to open a new window to ESET online scannner (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)
Then click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS1.gif

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox. Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS2.gif
When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:

Scan for potentially unwanted applications
Scan for potentially unsafe applications
Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
Now click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS3.gif
The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
Now click on: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS4.gif
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Thanks peku006

I ran the scan last night, but I made a mistake and closed it before I could save the log file. However, the scan showed no problems.

Should I rescan it?

Hi Jim Clark

Should I rescan it?
it is not necessary if the log was clean........and your computer is working properly :D:

Sorry for the delay,

The log was clean and my computer seems to be working fine. Do you want me to run that scan just to be sure?

Hi,

Sorry for the delay...

When I downloaded Security Check, it triggered a McAfee Site Advisor warning:

"McAfee has detected that your download contains viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted programs. These programs can damage your hard drive or steal your personal information"

Please advise.

Hi
as I said earlier:

Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

How's the computer running now? Any problems?

Thanks peku006

Hi,

Today, I ran CA Yahoo! Anti-Spy, which I do a few times a week. It detected the following items:

1) WinAntiVirus Pro 2006, which it categorized as "Rogue Security Software"
2) WinSpywareProtect, which it also categorized as "Rogue Security Software"
3) Bifrost, which it categorized as "Backdoor"

I don't think these were present a few days ago.

Thanks.

Hi Jim Clark

Gmer
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here (http://www.gmer.net/download.php) & save it to your desktop.
Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c227/tetonbob/gmer_th.gif (http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c227/tetonbob/gmer_screen2-1.gif)
Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ... IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)
Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

NOTE: If you cannot run GMER as indicated above, save a scan from the initial startup scan.
Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed & no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan
Double click the gmer.exe file
The program will begin to run & perform an initial scan. If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click No
After the "initial scan" is complete, click on the Save button, save the log file to your desktop & post it in your reply

Hi Jim Clark

Today, I ran CA Yahoo! Anti-Spy, which I do a few times a week. It detected the following items:

1) WinAntiVirus Pro 2006, which it categorized as "Rogue Security Software"
2) WinSpywareProtect, which it also categorized as "Rogue Security Software"
3) Bifrost, which it categorized as "Backdoor"

I don't think these were present a few days ag

does not show any traces of those infections......where they are located ?

Thanks peku006

Jim Clark
2010-10-11, 21:11
Oh. I removed them when the CA Yahoo! scan was completed. I should have mentioned that.

I run the CA Yahoo! scan about once a week.

I believe the computer was almost clean when these items showed up... you were asking me how the computer was running, I think it was almost clean at that point

Hi Jim Clark

strange that mbam found no WinAntiVirus Pro 2006 or WinSpywareProtect ,because it removes them both,
and they both should appear in the DDS log..........How to remove WinSpywareProtect (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-winspywareprotect)
I do not know how "reliable" Yahoo! CA Anti-Spy is ,because I have not used it myself

how long time it used to scan ?

Please go to Kaspersky website (http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html) and perform an online antivirus scan.

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button: Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases Click on My Computer under Scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Please post this log in your next reply.

Thanks peku006

Hi Jim Clark

Maybe those results were false positives
yeah, apparently because they are not on your computer, all logs are ok

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:

Delete Rootkit Unhooker ,TDSSKiller and Security Check from your desktop.

Click Start >> Run and then copy/paste the following into the box and hit Enter:
%userprofile%\Desktop\GooredFix.exe /uninstall
If any of your security programs query a new Registry/AutoStart value being added please allow the changes.

Download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe
Click the CleanUp! button
Select Yes when the Begin cleanup Process? Prompt appears
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
Turn off System Restore-Vista

Click the Vista/Start icon.
Right Click >> Computer
Click Properties.
Click the System Protection tab.
Uncheck All drives
Click Turn Off System Restore at the prompt then click Apply.
Restart your computer.

Turn ON System Restore-Vista

Click the Vista/Start icon
Right Click >> Computer
Click Properties.
Click the System Protection tab.
Checkmark All drives that were selected previously then click Apply.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)
F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html)

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com

Here are some things that I think are worth having a look at if you don't already know a bout them:.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html). Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html)

SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

WinPatrol
Download it from here (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html)
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here (http://www.firetrust.com/en/products/sitehound)

MVPS Hosts File from here (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?" (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)

Read some information here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html) how to prevent Malware.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy safe surfing! :bigthumb:

Hi,

When I try to uninstall GooredFix, instead it causes GooredFix to run.

This is what I typed in below:

C:\Users\*******\*******\Desktop\GooredFix.exe /uninstall

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks
