View Full Version : Probable malware - Antivirus software has been shut down/won't start

My computer has been taking a while to start up and is a lot slower than usual. I decided to check if this is being caused by a virus so I went to open AVG. The AVG interface informed me that "no AVG components are running". I could also not initiate a scan with AVG; the full computer scan window was blank. I proceeded to uninstall AVG and, after reading independent reviews that informed me that McAfee was better (less false negatives), proceeded to download McAfee from my university. I installed McAfee, but no components will start. I tried reinstalling it. Didn't work. When I double click on any of the McAfee components, the mouse shows an hourglass for a few seconds, but no program opens. I tried starting McAfee in safe mode. Still would not start. I read that there are such things as viruses that prevent antivirus software from starting. I tried running an online virus scanner, BitDefender, which found nothing. I also tried running rkill.exe, which doesn't seem to be stopping any processes, and the anti-virus software still won't run after that.

I am running Windows XP 32 bit professional version 2002 service pack 3.

The Attach.txt file from D.D.S. is attached. The contents of the DDS.txt file are below. I have disabled TeaTimer, but have not restarted my computer yet. I will have done that by the time I check this post again.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BitTorrent
DNA

I'd like you to read this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

When done, post fresh dds logs.

Thank you for your reply. I don't think I have used either of those programs for several years. I don't even remember what I used them for. I have uninstalled both of them. Below is the updated DDS report, and attached is the updated Attach.txt file.

Hi,

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Okay, I ran ComboFix, but I'm not entirely sure my antivirus software was completely shut down when I ran it since I am unable to access the McAfee console like the instructions said (the reason I'm here in the first place). I did attempt to disable the McAffee startup programs using msconfig.

Do you think there is indeed a virus here?

Here is the ComboFix log (the dds report is pasted below that):

Hi,

I think it may be best to uninstall McAfee for now. It can be reinstalled after we've finished.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

DDS::
BHO: {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - No File

EB: {32683183-48a0-441b-a342-7c2a440a9478} - No File

Save this as

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one (9.4) here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here (http://pdfreaders.org/).

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Uncheck Carbonite online backup trial if it's offered there.

I uninstalled the McAfee antivirus software, ran ComboFix with the script you provided, uninstalled Adobe Acrobat reader (I will install a newer version later), and uninstalled all old versions of Java, replacing them with the newest version.

I attempted to use Kaspersky Online Scanner, but it won't work. I get the following error in the "update" stage:

Launch of the Java application is interrupted! Please establish an uninterrupted Internet connection for work with this program.

The new ComboFix log and DDS log follow:

Okay the Kaspersky Online Scanner is working now that I've restarted my computer. I'll post the results of its scan, along with a new DDS log after it's done.

NoPetrol

The Kapersky scanner seems to keep freezing while scanning. This happens after several minutes, or after a few hours.

Hi,

Please defrag your hard drive and try to run Kaspersky after that.

NoPetrol
2010-10-11, 00:04
I defragmented the hard drive, but Kapsersky still won't run to completion. I think it's because Comcast can't manage to facilitate an uninterrupted Internet connection, and Kapsersky doesn't have a mechanism for starting once its scan has been interrupted.

Blade81

Please try ESET instead:
* Go here (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner) to run an online scanner from ESET.
Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is UNchecked.
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish and post back the results.

ESET has ran to completion, and has found three threats (although one seems to have already been quarantined by another anti virus program). As per your instructions, I set ESET to not remove the threats.

Hi,

Those will be removed when ComboFix is uninstalled and system restore reseted.

Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) and fix its findings.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

I don't know if I am still experiencing problems. The computer does not seems as slow as it used to be, but the main problem was that my anti virus software wouldn't start up. Should I re-install McAfee now to see if it works?

Thank you. McAfee now installs and runs (although now my computer is slow again, and I am even seeing blue screens of death, but I think this is either a problem with McAfee or perhaps a hard drive issue). I have cleared the system restore files and removed the fixing tools as you instructed. Once again, thank you for your help and advice.

You're welcome. Hints on the list here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html) may help with performance issues.

Yeah, that webpage that you linked to states that McAfee is a resource hog. Do you have any suggestions? I guess not having on-access scanning enabled and just scanning for threats using on-demand scan when I'm not using the computer is a bad idea, right?

Good free antivirus programs are:
Antivir (http://free-av.com/en/download/1/download_avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html)
Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) and
AVG Free Antivirus (http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition)

Good commercial ones are from:
Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/homeuser) and
ESET (http://www.eset.com/products/index.php)
