View Full Version : Microsoft Security Essentials

Hello:

A few days ago a "Microsoft Security Essentials Alert" popped up on my screen. I realized straight away that it was bogus and did NOT press either the "clean computer" button or the "apply actions" button. However, the annoying alert will not go away after cleaning with Malware Bytes and AVG. It prevents me from using explorer and several other important things. I looked around for help on any website I could find from another computer and it helped me trace the alert to something called hotfix.exe in the Application Data Folder. I killed the process (Hotfix.exe) through Hijack this tools and it made the alert go away and basically brought me back to normal..... so that I could get online and post this log. Im pretty sure that if I need to reboot that the alert will raise its head again.

Here is my log:

Hi RKennedy

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire

I'd like you to read this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).

Please go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

After that:

Rkill
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, ignore & allow the download to continue.
Download RKill by Grinler from Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com) & save it to your Desktop.
Alternate download links:
Two (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.scr)
Three (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.pif)
Four (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe)
Double click Rkill to run it
A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal
If this does not happen... delete the file, then download & use the next link provided
If it does not work, repeat the process & attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs Do not reboot your machine until asked to do so. If no version of Rkill would run, please let me know
When finished, Notepad will open with a log file, automatically saved at C:\rkill.log
Copy/paste the contents of the rkill.log file in your next reply
Leave Rkill on the Desktop unless instructed otherwise

Note: If you get an alert that Rkill is infected, ignore it. The alert is a fake warning given by the rogue software, trying to "protect" itself from being terminated or removed. If you see such a warning, leave the warning on the screen, then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this sometimes allows you to bypass the malware's attempt to protect itself, so that Rkill can perform its routine.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Select the Update tab
Click Check for Updates
After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
Then click on the Scan button.
If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
We will take care of the System Volume Information items later.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please reply with

The rkill log
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log

Thanks peku006

Hi

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, & also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 21.
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Here (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp)
Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)"
Click the orange Download JRE button to the right
Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs & remove all older versions of Java
Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup) On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button
Next, click on the Delete Files button
There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH CheckedApplications and Applets
Trace and Log Files Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1 (http://jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/SystemLook.exe)
Download Mirror #2 (http://images.malwareremoval.com/jpshortstuff/SystemLook.exe)

Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

:filefind
QaBar.dll

Click the Look button to start the scan.
When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found at on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Do you mean update 22? ANd which one....JDK or JRE?

Java Platform, Standard Edition
JDK 6 Update 22 (JDK or JRE)
This release includes performance improvements and security vulnerability fixes. Learn more

What Java Do I Need? You must have a copy of the JRE (Java Runtime Environment) on your system to run Java applications and applets. To develop Java applications and applets, you need the JDK (Java Development Kit), which includes the JRE.

Hi RKennedy

System Still Slow?
You may wish to try StartupLite. (http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php) Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=87058&view=findpost&p=487112)

Congratulations you are clean! :yahoo:

To remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created do the following:

Delete SystemLook from your desktop.

Download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click OTC.exe
Click the CleanUp! button
Select Yes when the Begin cleanup Process? Prompt appears
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove but it may be a useful tool to keep ......Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide (http://www.lognrock.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=6913).

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector/)
F-secure Health Check (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001356.html)

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Here are some things that I think are worth having a look at if you don't already know a bout them:.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html). Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html)

SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

WinPatrol
Download it from here (http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html)
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here (http://www.firetrust.com/en/products/sitehound)

MVPS Hosts File from here (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?" (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)

Read some information here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html) how to prevent Malware.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy safe surfing! :bigthumb:
