View Full Version : Think I might have a keylogger - Odd AVG behavior / changed passwords

Hello forum. You all helped me last year with a different username and I was very welcome for your help.

Edit
TheWarden (http://forums.spybot.info/member.php?u=68788) account now closed.

I think I might have a keylogger or rootkit. Couple of notes:

I run AVG Free and Online Armor firewall with SB-S&D Tea Timer. I have daily overnight AVG scans, one morning OA had a pop up that asked to block a AVG file that wanted to write to disc. All AVG files I allow, but I know "writing to disc" message says something about rootkits. I allowed it, but didn't note that AVG resident shield was disabled. Since then I believe I have lost control of my Hotmail address after I changed my password (typed it in), then lost control of my Gmail address in the same way.

I am writing from an old 98 machine that I don't use. I was able to change my GMail password from this and regain control of it. The problem pc is not connected to this one or the internet for now. Transfer of files is via CD-R.

AVG Free that ran last night and SB-S&D was clean a few days ago. Java and Flash updates just popped up in my tray a few days ago, but haven't updated those.

Sorry that was long. Here is requested DDS logs, and thanks again for all your help. OA says disabled as I disabled it to run DDS.com.

Hi,

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Please post contents of that file + fresh dds.txt log in your next reply.

Thank you for your attention.

Downloaded, burned to CD-R and brought to pc in question.

Dos window pops up with the following error message and MBam-setup won't run.

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0562 IP:020d OP:63 6f 6e 74 65 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
Close Ignore

Closed, obviously. Did not click Ignore.

Spybot's Teatimer and Online Armor are on still; don't know if one of them is stopping it.

Next steps?
Have a nice day.

Hi,

Did it show any related file path with that error?

Please reboot and temporarily disable your protection software (AVG, TeaTimer, Online Armor). See if you're able to run MBAM setup now.

twarden

Okdokey.

Yes, it did show a path, but only the path where I put the MBam setup file, ie my desktop.

It looks like XP updated itself over the last day or so as it was restarted then came up with the "your computer has updated" typical message after log-in.

Online Armor asked if I wanted to block c:/windows/system32/spupdsvc.exe "Update Run Once Service" upon log-in. I did not recognize it, so I blocked it for now. Although in hindsight, this might be part of the recent XP update? Lemme know on this. I can set it to allow under OA.

Anyway... I:

1. Re-downloaded MBam setup file to a different name in case download was screwed up, then CD-Red to other computer.
2. Disabled Teatimer, then restarted. (Disabling it takes place next restart.)
3. Shut down OA and AVG's resident scanner.
4. Ran renamed MBam.

Got the same error message as before.

Next steps?

Hi,

You may allow that process to access net.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

What in the... We may be able to back up a step.

OK, I am now confused at a previous step. I went to the MBAM file I had downloaded (in this old 98 PC) in your link before and it was very small... about 24K. So I wonder if download wasn't working or something is not right with this pc.

I go to the computer in question and go to this topic. I right click and save the link you gave me as it says bestechie.net/tools/mbamsetup.exe. It saves but is bigger but only 50K or so, so I think it's good now.

It runs like a program but doesn't do anything. Doesn't appear in the processes.

But then I right click and open link to see if it still comes as a program. That takes me to a download page at hxxp://www.techspot.com/downloads/4716-malwarebytes-anti-malware.html for a 6 meg program. Did you really mean for me to download that? (I guess it downloaded the link as a renamed exe file?) Also when I right clicked and opened on 98 PC I get directed to hxxp://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Malwarebytes-AntiMalware/1186760019/1 instead of Techspot's hosting. Why did a different place come up on the same link in the same day?

Sorry for the dumb questions. Am I being redirected to a bad link?

Awaiting further instruction.
Have a nice day.

I get directed to hxxp://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Malwarebytes-AntiMalware/1186760019/1
That's correct link. You can download the installer (6,009kb) there by clicking "Download Now" on the right side of the screen on that page.

Let's leave ComboFix step for now and see if you're able to get correct installer.

Next?
Happy Wednesday.

Looks otherwise good but some programs need updating. Download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) and fix its findings.

twarden
2010-10-22, 02:54
Done.

PSI found a few old versions of Macromedia (left in factory installations of AOL), Firefox, OpenOffice, and Sun Java JRE. Updated each one by one by the "solution" button. PSI comes up 100% now. Adobe Reader updated via system tray before PSI as well.

Neat program, thanks.

Next?

Are there any issues left? To me the latest logs looked ok.

twarden
2010-10-22, 20:04
I am not sure. I might have just got password phished via website or a program vulnerability rather than a keylogger / rootkit... that is if you do not see any evidence of those.

I had Facebook tell me quite a while ago someone had logged into my account that it didn't think was me, so I think it verified me via IP and I changed my password (maybe I changed several at that time). Sometime later I couldn't log into Hotmail (may have not wrote it down right) so I've been trying to change my password via Hotmail's password recovery system via email. None of the links or instructions they sent me to my other email (a GMail address) seemed to work or change password. I gave up on that. Then sometime after that GMail wouldn't let me log in! So I figured keylogger.

Gmail is the only one of those that is important to me, and I've got it back with this old PC and have changed the password. I haven't done any browsing on the computer in question like log into Gmail yet with new password.

So... I guess it it hard to say for now.

No need for Combofix this time? If all looks good, any suggestions? Change my passwords again? Change them more often?

2010-10-23, 10:53
Hi,

Passwords should be changed occasionally making sure that same password is not used for all services. Another important thing is to keep system up-to-date. PSI should help on that :)

So, all clear?

If so, thanks for all your help! I'm visiting family for a couple of days so I'll check back here when I get back.

Have a great weekend.

Yep, looks ok. You too have a nice weekend :)
