Hello

Yesterday I received what apparently was a bogus update message from Firefox. Strange things happened afterward. I found a process running (much internet activity) and got some AVG alerts. I located and deleted the program. Spybot was not installed. I could not access the Spybot website with Firefox or IE. I did download Spybot from abnother site (CNET) but instllation aborts with an error message.

I undoubtedly have an infection. Hope you can help. "Attach.txt" attached, DDS file below:

Thanks

This is the zipped attach file... sorry.

I found the program wgk.exe set to run at startup. I have deleted the file and disabled the auto startup but it may have infected other processes. Still cannot activate Spybot or access Spybot website.

Hi cmpoel, welcome to the forum.

To make cleaning this machine easier
Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
Please do not run any scans other than those requested
Please follow all instructions in the order posted
All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Go HERE (http://www.gmer.net/) to get a randomly named copy of GMER. Scroll down to the Download section and click Download EXE. Save it to your desktop.

Before scanning with GMER, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double click on the file you downloaded. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/ss269/Cat_Byte/GMER/gmer_th.gif (http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/ss269/Cat_Byte/GMER/gmer_screen2-1.gif)
Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.

Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If GMER will not run in normal windows, please run it in Saffe Mode

Next

Download OTL (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe) to your Desktop

Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
Click on Minimal Output at the top
Download the following file scan.txt to your Desktop. Click here to download it (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/download/395-otl-custom-scan-file-scantxt/). You may need to right click on it and select "Save"
Double click inside the Custom Scan box at the bottom
A window will appear saying "Click OK to load a custom scan from a file or Cancel to cancel"
Click the OK button and navigate to the file scan.txt which we just saved to your desktop
Select scan.txt and click Open. Writing will now appear under the Custom Scan box
Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won?t take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and post them in your topic

Please post back with GMER log
both OTL logs

Please describe all symptoms you are experiencing.

Thanks

Hello Oldman 960 -

I got impatient downloaded and ran "free" Housecall... sorry.

It located several infections but then offered to remove them if I paid, which I refused. Nevertheless, the next day I found that I was able to access the Safer-Networking website and also found I could install Sybot which I could not previously do. So I installed Spybot and ran a scan which located and removed several tracking files. I do not seem to be having any further problem. Is it still advisable to run the programs you suggested?

Thanks

Hi cmpoel,

Yes it is. You said though housecall detected some infections it didn't remove anything and Spybot found only tracking cookies, which are actually harmless.

There are some indications that you may have been ifected by a rougue security program. So go ahead and run the scans and post the logs.

Thanks

Hi -

Sorry to be late responding. GMER is attached but the other two files are too large to be included or attached in the forum. Can I email them to you directly?

Hi cmpoel,

Please zip them then attach the zip.

Thanks

Zipped files attached.

Also, when I ran Spybot, it placed the following two files in the virus vault:

"";"C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfc45.dll";"Corrupted executable file";"Moved to Virus Vault"

"";"C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{A1B7B9B3-E1D2-41CA-9B4A-F18DC2710704}\_41BECA2.exe";"Corrupted executable file";"Moved to Virus Vault"

Hi cmpoel,

Seems you have taken care of most items I saw earlier. Any problems?

You have some very old vulnerable Java installed.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10

Do not uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 16

Next, Click your start button, open Control panel.
Locate the Java icon (it looks like a coffee cup)
double click it to open it
click the Update tab
Click update now

Next Still in the control panel, clear the java cache

To clear the Java Plug-in cache:
Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
On the General tab, Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
On the Temporary Files Settings screen, Click Delete Files.
check all boxes
Click OK

Download and save to your desktop Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Please post back with
MBAM log
Thanks

Perhaps "Housecall" actually removed the infections it found even though it did not indicate that it did so.

Hi Compoel,

MBAM just found some remnants. It's a good program and I recommend you keep it.

I believe HouseCall has an AutoClean option that can be set prior to the scan or a Clean now option that can be used after the scan so perhaps it did remove what it found.

Any problems at all? We can look a little deeper if you wish.

Thanks

Hi compoel,

We'll remove the tools I had you download. I would also suggest you reset your System Restore points as the old ones are most likely infected.

From your desktop, please delete
any notepads/logs that we created
GMER (cu9bbmc4.exe)
DDS.scr

* Create a new restore point

You must be logged on to an administrator account
Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.
Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point
click create

* Remove old restore points

Go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - system tools.
Launch the Disk Cleanup tool and let it run.
When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab.
On this tab you will find a section for System Restore.
If you press the Clean Up button for that section, Windows will delete all restore points except for the most recent one.

Open OTL then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTL wants to contact the internet - allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.

I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep it updated and use it regularly as an on demand scanner.

Basic security consists of 1 antivirus program, 1 resident antispyware program, 1 on demand antispyware program and a firewall. For real time antispyware protection you could enable SpyBot' Teatimer.

* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.

Click FIREWALL (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) for links and tutorials to good, free and paid for firewalls. (Note: Zone Alarm is becoming bloatware)

-Secure your Internet Explorer

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
