I am infected by a backdoor trojan and cannot seem to rid myself of it. Whenever MS AutoUpdate is running I get another wuauclt.exe process running under my user telling me I have updates available. I have NOT clicked to activate these updates and have turned off MS System Restore and MS AutoUpdate until I can get rid of this.

I have run avast and AVG AV but they no longer find the virus.

Here is my HT log. Thanks,
Joe P

Hello Joe and welcome to the forum, I don't know if I can help you or not, but before I can try:

1) Turn System Restore back on, a bad SR point is better than none in an emergency. We will clean it out again before finished.

2) You are running two antivirus programs and that is just bad policy, see this information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html

3) This log appears to have been run in Safe Mode, I need the logs in Normal Mode with everything enabled in MSConfig. I have to be able to see the stuff.

4) You may leave Windows Updates turned off for now in the Security Center, just don't forget to turn it on and make sure you have all of the new updates once you are clean.

5) I see a damaged BHO that appears to be old Smitfraud, I need to look to make sure that infection is not present also:
Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Here is a tutorial if you wish to see it, all you are doing is the SEARCH function now.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm (http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm)

Recap: Correct the issues I mentioned above and then post the report from SmitfraudFix and a new HJT log so I can see where we are.

Thanks...pskelley

Thanks for returning the information, I still see nothing of this trojan? Can you give me the name and pathway of the "trojan".
you obviously understand this is valid: wuauclt.exe http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/wuauclt/

Give me whatever information you can provide, we will run the new free trial of ewido to see if it shows anything first.

A question, the items in the 015 "trusted zone", you did put them there and you know they are valid, correct?

1) First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

(Hold that scan report until we finish)

2) Turn off TeaTimer, it will block the changes: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm
turn it back on when you finish.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {77701e16-9bfe-4b63-a5b4-7bd156758a37} - (no file)
(next two are optional, remove them if you want)
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete the contents (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Gaining-Speed-Empty-Prefetch-XP.html

If you don't have a good cleaner, use this free one with these instructions:
Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Run this trojan scan and post the results for me.
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

If you did not tell me there was a problem, I would believe this is a clean log. It is possible this was a false positive cause by the competing AV versions?

Make sure you restart the computer, post the ewido scan results, the trojan scan results, a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

Thanks

I have decided I successfully removed the virus(es) found earlier (prior to my initial post) and I was overreacting to the normal update process - I have let MS autoupdate for so long I had forgotten how the normal behaviour appeared when an update is available bu tno tyet installed!

My internet explorer sessions run rather slowly but I will continue to search for how to speed that process up.

Thanks so much for your help and I am sorry to have posted for a non-issue.
