View Full Version : Win 7 & Chrome Browser Hijack

Hi there...

Posting on behalf of my wife. She has a Sony Vaio laptop with Win 7 Professional and uses Chrome, but she's been having trouble with browser hijacks every time she tries to click a link after a Google search. As a result, she's received several Malware attacks from redirects. Can you help? Although we keep reomoving the malware, the browser hijacks persist. I have to apologize as I ran SB-S&D first as a precaution as I was unaware of this forum, but I notice that it hasn't appeared to stop the hijacks.

Here's the DDS log:

Hi Shelf Life...

Thanks for your reply...sorry that this reply itself took a couple of days (Thanksgiving is a busy time of year)...

We would still very much like help. Unfortunately, I've been using my laptop, although I've restricted my browsing mainly to non sign-in sites.

Please help! Do you need us to post any more details? As I mentioned before, my wife keeps getting redirected to (unsafe) search pages whenever she clicks a link in google.

Thanks a lot!

hi,

ok will first let me say that one of the best tools for malware dosnt work on a 64 bit OS.
A reformat of Windows could be the only solution. We will try two others first. You can use TDSSkiller first followed by malwarebytes:

Please download TDSS Killer.exe (http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe) and save it to your desktop
Double click to launch the utility. After it initializes click the start scan button.

Once the scan completes you can click the continue button.

"The utility will automatically select an action (Cure or Delete) for known malcious objects. A suspicious object will be skipped by default."

"After clicking Next, the utility applies selected actions and outputs the result."

"A reboot might require after disinfection."

A report will be found in your Root drive Local Disk (C) as TDSSKiller.2.4.2.1_09.08.2010_17.32.21_log.txt (name, version, date, time)
Please post the log report
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please download the free version of Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.

Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

Be sure that everything is checked, and click *Remove Selected.*

*A restart of your computer may be required to remove some items. If prompted please restart your computer to complete the fix.*

When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Post the log in your reply.

Dear shelf life,

Thanks for your help. I am posting the logs as requested; for the record, neither program (with the latest updates) found anything positive, hope that suggest the next step...:thanks:

I'm afraid I had to .zip the TDSS Killer log as it exceeded the file size allocated for a .txt attachment - apologies.

Thanks again for your help!

hi,

Thanks for the info, The MBAM log was ok. You sure that was the entire TDSSkiller log? How are the browser re-directs now?

Dear shelf life,

Thanks for your reply and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Things seem to be marginally better, but my wife is still getting a lot of redirects.

In each case, clicking on the link directly takes her to some generic page (in the last instance, a page of 'mom'-inspired arts and crafts), but clicking the 'cached' image on google, then clicking the link at the top (where it says "this is Google's cache of http://xxxxx") is fine.

I right-clicked and copied a link to capture one of the redirects and it appears to be using google's 'go' command, e.g.:

hxxp://www.google.com/go?27247968 (I replaced the t's with x's).

(I have no idea where this link leads, but it may well be an unsafe page.)

We really appreciate your continued help - and apologies once again for the delayed reply! I really am stumped...

hi,

Yea iam stumped to, because I dont see any malware.
Do the redirects only happen when you click links in google?
what if you click different links that are in your favorites? Do you go directly to the web site or do you end up at some random place?

Can you get to these sites below ok?

AVG (http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage)
Avast (http://www.avast.com/index)
Norton (http://www.symantec.com/index.jsp)
Mcafee (http://www.mcafee.com/us/)
