Hello,
I recently had several viruses/malware that I thought I had got rid of using my antivirus software (avast) and running malwarebytes. At one point I had a fake Windows Security Center screen showing all these infections and then several trojans were found. I just have one lingering problem and I have not found much about it during my research so I am not sure if it is remaining malware or something else. The problem is that something like the Windows Installer continually pops up and says "Please wait while Windows configures Unload". Then another window pops up saying that the feature you are trying to use is unavailable and says to look for an alternate path for the uninstall package 'unload.msi'. The use source box shows the path: c:\hp\tmp\src\setup\UnloadIntent\ I haven't uninstalled or installed any hp software that I know of and this started after the virus problems. It is constantly popping up and i have to press cancel a dozen times to stop it.

Here is my DDS Log:

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen. It is advisable that you back up your important data before starting any clean up procedure. Neither Safer Networking Forums nor the Analyst providing the advice may be held responsible for any loss.

Until we deem your system clean I am going to ask you not to install or uninstall any software or hardware except for the programs we may run.

Sorry for the delay but the forums are very busy.

Nothing jumping out at me, but it does look like you have about 3 HP printers installed. Lets run another program to look deeper into your system.

OTL by OldTimer

Download OTL (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe) to your desktop.
Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

Hi,

I don't see anything malicious on your log. I am looking at RegGenie, which is legit but unless your a windows expert and know what your removing you should not fool around with any registry cleaners. There not needed, remove the wrong entry or entries and you can disable your system, remove the obsolete ones and you will see no difference in system performance.

You ran Malwarebytes prior to posting, open Malwarebytes and go to the report tab and copy and paste the report from the last scan you ran, then open it again, check for updates and run the Quick scan and post the new log.

Then run this free online virus scanner and post the log and if nothing malicious shows up then I can link you to a windows forum for help with the printer issue.

ESET Online Scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.

Hi,

Do you know how I can remove RegGenie? I don't see it in programs, just the config file in Windows folder.

Here are the Malwarebytes logs, old and new. I am running the Eset Scanner now, so will post that in the next post incase it is too much for one post.

Hi, here are the ESET Scan results:

Hi,

You can open up Spybot Search and Destroy and look in the Recovery Tab and remove it all.

Go ahead and post a fresh OTL log, no need for the extras this time and let me look for Reg Genie entries and we can remove it if you wish.

How are things running now ?

Hi, things are running well, but I'm not sure if I"ve got rid of the Windows installer pop up yet. It was there when I came on just now, but I must say that when I clicked cancel, it did not persist as it usually does. And it hasn't come back yet as I've been running the OTL scan, so that is good. Do you think that those worm entries that Spybot found were something to do with this problem?

I can only vaguely recall why I had RegGenie on here and I know that I didn't do anything major with it as I am too scared to mess with the registry, so I don't mind removing it, if you can help with that.

Here is the fresh OTL log:

Hi, my response and OTL log are in the previous post, and I am still online and just wanted to add that the windows installer has popped up twice again! Perhaps it is just some sort of printer problem as you mentioned in a previous post.

Well, I am not looking at Reg Genie fully installed, it may have been removed at one time.

You can delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\RegGenie.ini

I would like you to post in this windows forum for the Installed problem, I am sure its just related to your printer and we just do malware removal on this forum.

Let me know how it went

Hello! I just wanted to let you know that my Windows Installer/Printer problem has been fixed. I received some very helpful advice from the folks at the website you referred me to. A combination of updating my printer drivers and using the Windows Installer Cleanup utility to get rid of that "unload" entry seems to have taken care of the annoying problem. I am no longer having these pop ups!

It is also good to know that I've gotten rid of any malware remaining on my computer.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you! Thank you again for your help and for the reference to the other forum which will also be very useful in the future.

Happy Holidays! :thanks:

How did I get infected in the first place ?
Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/)
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.

WinPatrol (www.winpatrol.com/download.html) Keep this fine program activated to block a lot of threats

Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.

Spyware Guard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html) It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.

IE-Spyad (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,23332-order,1-page,1-c,antispywaretools/description.html)
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

Firefox 3 (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Safe Surfn
Ken
