View Full Version : Start menu, task bar & desktop icons all missing

Thanks in advance for your help.
The original problem manifested through Google. When I would do a search, and click on the link in the results, I was redirected to random websites, usually domain names for sale. Even when I was clicking on known links for companies like ABC or NBC.
I ran an Ad-Aware scan and it showed no results. Then I downloaded a PC Tools AntiVirus Free. I do not remember exactly, but I believe that it came up with a couple of cookies. Then I downloaded Spybot and ran it. It came up with multiple items, which I do not have to list. After having Spybot remove those items, I restarted my PC. When it came back up, my Start menu, taskbar and desktop icons were gone. I went through several threads, following directions to see if my taskbar was hidden and so on. Once I figured out that I could open my task manager and run programs through it, I ran Spybot again and it came back with a list that was very similar if not exactly the same as the first time.
I have backed up my registry (though not before making some unknowledgable changes using the tools on http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm) using ERUNT. From the mentioned site, I used 'Batch File Assoc Fix' 'Directory' 'Drive' 'EXE File Assoc Fix' & 'Folder Assoc Fix'. I also tried Taskbar Repair Tool Plus! from kellys-korner-xp.com with no luck.
Thats all. Thanks again for your time. Here is my DDS:

Hi,
IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.
µTorrent
LimeWire
I'd like you to read this thread (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=282).
Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer to make sure it won't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode
On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.
Please continue as follows:
Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:
C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

I turned off the TeaTimer, but I don't know how to access the control panel to remove the P2P programs. It doesn't show up and I don't know another way. I attached a screenshot of what I see when I am trying to access it. I didn't know if I should continue with your instructions regardless, so this is as far as I have went.
Thanks
Hi,
Let's remove P2P software later. Please continue with ComboFix part.
DallasUSA11
2011-01-05, 02:21
ok, when I start ComboFix, I get the message in the attached screenshot. But its not that easy. No matter how I try, I cannot get PCTools to stop running. I have tried to remove it from the autostart programs through Spybot & terminating it through AdAware, and I've tried to end the processes pctsGui.exe and pctsSvc.exe in my task manager processes. In the above linked "Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link" it gives the instruction to simply right click on the program and hit disable on my toolbar, but I don't have a toolbar. :) I still haven't ran ComboFix. Next recommended step?
Thanks!
Hi,
See if you are able to run ComboFix in safe mode. If that's not possible then uninstall PCTools until we've finished the case.
DallasUSA11
2011-01-06, 01:27
Okay, started in safe mode, ComboFix still said PCTools was running (even though it doesn't show on my processes). I pulled up my add/remove programs finally by using the run command appwiz.cpl. When I tried to delete PCTools it gave me the error message in the attached screenshot. Sooo, I can't delete or turn off PCTools and Combofix doesn't like it. I'm starting to think that PCTools is part of the problem. I downloaded it the day my desktop disappeared... What now?
DallasUSA11
2011-01-06, 01:32
By the way, I restarted not in safe mode and it gave me the same error when I tried to uninstall it.
Hi,
Please try AppRemover (http://www.appremover.com/get/appremover.exe) to uninstall PC Tools.
DallasUSA11
2011-01-10, 21:36
AppRemover didn't work. I ran it, I deleted PCTools, restarted, pulled up task mgr, PCTools still running, ran AppRemover, it didn't detect PCTools any more, but the files are all still there and it is running.... BUT I had an idea. I installed PCTools on my external, so I restarted without it plugged in and it isn't running. I don't know if this will allow us to fix everything though since the external isn't plugged in. Should I go ahead and run ComboFix without the external hd connected?
Hi,
Give ComboFix a try and we'll see if it works this way or not :)
DallasUSA11
2011-01-11, 00:47
So, even with the external unplugged and the machine restarted, when I try to run ComboFix, it still says that PCTools is active...
Hi,
Try to uninstall program with Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com/). Post back fresh dds logs if ComboFix run still fails (even in safe mode).
DallasUSA11
2011-01-12, 04:21
Revo Uninstaller seemed like it worked to remove it. All the program files and folders disappeared and the program would no longer find it. BUT when I ran ComboFix it gave me the same error message about PCTools actively running. Should I run it anyway or should I wait until we are sure that PCTools is gone?

I ran ComboFix, it found some infections and did some deleting. Then it restarted my computer without creating a log for me, so I ran it again. This time it made the log. I also attached a screen print of an error message that popped up immediately after.
Hi again,
See if you're able to uninstall P2P software we talked about earlier.

Good. Delete ESET findings except QooBox and system volume information related ones. Those will be removed after ComboFix is uninstalled and system restore reseted.
Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.
THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT
Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.
Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) and fix its findings.
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.
Have a great day,
Blade

Hi,
Well, I fixed all the Secunia findings, updated internet explorer & windows, and all of my desktop it back (YAAAAAY), but the internet is running MUCH slower than before so I didn't reset my restore point or uninstall combofix in case you needed to have me do some more stuff.

Also, I am still seeing PCTools in my DDS log but its not showing up anywhere else. Can we get rid of it completely?
Hi,
We can remove PCTools remaining if you're not going to reinstall it.
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer to make sure it won't interfere with fixes:
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode
On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

During the combofix, the computer restarted on its own and when it rebooted it went to the blue screen error message. I tried starting in normal, safe mode, and last know working settings. each time it went to the blue error screen. I took a pic in case you needed to see it.
Hi,
Earlier logs indicate you have recovery console installed. Please follow these steps:
1. Restart your computer
2. Before Windows loads, you will be prompted to choose which Operating System to start
3. Use the up and down arrow key to select Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
4. You must enter which Windows installation to log onto. Type 1 and press enter.
5. At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:
cd erdnt\subs
6. At the next prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:
batch erdnt.con
7. The erunt backups will begin copying.
8. At the next prompt, type the following bolded text, and press Enter:
exit
Windows should now begin loading.

ok, I did that. Everything was as you said it should be until windows should now begin loading. When it began loading, it went back to the blue error screen as before.
Hi,
Reboot into safe mode and note down the final driver file (.sys) you see before BSOD. Also, please verify if BSOD error is the same as earlier (STOP: 0x0000007B).

Sorry, didn't read your instruction carefully. multi(0)disc(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)/windows/systerm32/drivers/mup.sys
Hi,
Do you have more than one Windows installations? Just asking cos that line you posted shows partition 2.
DallasUSA11
2011-01-21, 22:40
Not that I know of.
Hi,
Try to start back into recovery console and type this command there:
chkdsk /r
When that's done type command exit. See if Windows is able to start.
Do you have your Windows installation media handy?
DallasUSA11
2011-01-23, 00:23
did it, windows still will not start. same error as before, same BSOD error. Yes, I have my Windows CD.
Hi,
If repair install (http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm) doesn't help then reformat is likely only option available.
DallasUSA11
2011-01-24, 01:23
It let me do everything until step #6 "Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact." It stopped at the attached picture. It asked me to choose the language but the mouse and keyboard (USB wireless) wouldn't work. Similar to this http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/247704-45-keyboard-stopped-working-repair-install So, based on the advice there, I borrowed a PS2 keyboard & mouse and rebooted. It still did not work. How do I get around this?
Try to reboot one more time making sure both devices are plugged in first (unplug USB keyboard & mouse). If it doesn't work then try to do those steps from 1 again with PS2 devices plugged in.
DallasUSA11
2011-01-25, 05:20
the only thing it will let me do besides go to the boot menu, is the same screen of the repair install. When I reboot, it goes to it w/ or w/out the cd in and if the cd isnt in, it asks for it. Still the PS2 keyboard and mouse will not work.
This time though, instead of asking for my language it says fatal error. I attache d a pic.
Hi,
That and those BSODs earlier indicate possible hard drive issue. How old is this system and its hard drive?
DallasUSA11
2011-01-26, 00:41
2004 Dell Dimension 2400
Hi,
So it could be hard drive thing then. If you have another system, you could plug this drive as slave to other system and backup important stuff. Then reformat the drive.

i have my laptop, but I wouldn't know how to do that.
Hi,
To get access to hard drive with laptop you'd need to get external enclosure with usb interface to plug hard drive in. However, to me it looks this should be better dealt by taking the computer to a shop and let them do backuping. Things are namely getting too difficult to take care of via forum.
