I have run ewido, spybot, adaware numerous times. Ewido continues to pick up around 20 tracking cookies each scan.

Hello chiklet,

Welcome to Safer Networking Forums :)

Your log shows that you have disabled some startup programs using MSConfig.
This is not recommended because I cannot clearly see everything that is loading on your computer at startup.
To enable all startup items quickly please follow these instructions:

Start | Run | type msconfig | OK
If not already selected go to the General tab.
Under Startup Selection select "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services".
Click Apply and then Close.
When given the option, please choose to restart the computer.
Post a new log when you are done.

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller (http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip).
Unzip it to it’s own folder (c:\BFU)

RIGHT-CLICK HERE (http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu) and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra Remover. Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Open My Computer and navigate to the c:\BFU folder. Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

In the scriptline to execute field copy and paste c:\bfu\alcanshorty.bfu
Press execute and let it do it’s job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

RIGHT-CLICK HERE (http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/sidekickFix.bat) and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download SideKickFix.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Please close ALL other open windows & explorer folder's, then double-click on sidekickFix.bat.
Click YES and follow the prompts, when prompted to restart the PC please do so.
Then please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running now. :)

Thanks,
tea

Again tea, thanks so much for the assistance. I have noticed no change in the pop-ups unfortunately. I double-checked your directions and made sure I follow them explicitly.

Hello,

You have a LOT going on here, so I'm not surprised. Let's do this first, please:

Could I please see an uninstall list? This will be a big help for us both.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please download SmitfraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

We need to try this again.

Please let me know if you're having problems with this. Post a new HijackThis log in your reply.

Thanks

Tea ~

Followed directions carefully, ran BFU, pasted the script, hit execute, and the completed box pops up immediately. Here is the new HJT log:

Hello,

I know you're trying, so don't think I'm doubting you at all. ;)This is being stubborn. I'm thinking Norton Script blocking service may be stopping our fix. Could you please disable it, then try the last directions again?

Thanks for hanging in there with me tea. I know we will figure it out eventually.

Okay, I went ahead and uninstalled the entire Norton suite from this box (I never use them anyway). Also, and maybe I should have posted this earlier, everytime my machine restarts, as soon as the desktop appears Im getting a pop-up error message:

RUNDLL

Error loading w2a4d24b.dll
The specified module could not be found

Dont know if that is related to anything but I thought you might want to know.

Okay, after I uninstalled Norton, I ran BFU again. And again as soon as I hit execute, the 'complete' box appears. Regardless, here is the latest HJT log:

O4 - Startup: Z_Start.lnk = C:\ZIGID003.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".

Delete the following files:

c:\windows\system32\dwdsregt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\vttsuriA.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSC00.exe
C:\Program Files\outlook <--- this folder, NOT Outlook Express!!
C:\WINDOWS\ms03703281742.exe
C:\\kybrd.exe
C:\\dfndra.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cfg32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\baauhk.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\svchostsys <----this folder
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SMANTE~1 <----this folder. There will likely be more letters, but will start with SMANTE
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\YSTEM3~1 <-----this folder, same as above.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mwinsqez.exe
C:\ZIGID003.exe

search for and delete these files:
winlog.exe
w2a4d24b.dll
links.exe

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Doubleclick the [b]drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/check.gif
If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/move.gif
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
Close Dr.Web Cureit.
Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Thanks,
tea

Tea ~

I'm finished with the HiJackThis scan, have slected and Fixed the items you listed. I'm on the part now where you listed several files/folders to search for manually and delete.

Some of the items you listed are not being found (I've selected check hidden files).

Some of the items are on my computer, BUT NOT IN THE PATH YOU POSTED.

Should I delete them regardless ? I will wait for a response before I continue.

Hi,

Just delete the ones you're sure of for now. Run Dr.Web and we'll see what's left. There's a lot there to deal with and I don't expect it to go away all at once. Thank you so much for asking! Some people don't and we end up with a mess. You're doing great!:bigthumb:

It's me who should be, and will continue to, thanking you.

Okay Dr Web is currently on the "big" scan, nothing was found in memory.
Of the 15 or so items you listed as needing to be deleted, I found 4 and deleted them.

So far the long DrWeb scan has picked up a few items ( yes to all ). Ill post the log from there and a new HJT log as soon as its done.

Hi,

This is progress.:) How is it running now? Let's go back a few posts to the uninstall list. Via Add/Remove Programs, you need to uninstall all the older versions of Java. They leave your computer vulnerable and indeed, looks like Java was infected.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

The following are optional, but really should go, as they pose a threat to your computer's security:

Kazaa 2.7.1 <---this is probably how your music files got infected.
LimeWire 4.10.9
Viewpoint Media Player
Wild Jack Casino <----if you don't know this program, it should go.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Hhl7RfpJ] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssn6tuu.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ftexc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mptft.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".

Delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssn6tuu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mptft.exe

Reboot your computer.

Use Cleanmgr to clean temporary files:

1. Click > start > run and type cleanmgr and click OK
2. Scan your system for files to remove.
3. Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
4. Click OK to remove those files.
5. Click Yes to confirm deletion.

Run a scan with Ewido and post the report, along with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks,
tea :)

Hey chik,

WOOT!!:dancing-c: Ewido showed only cookies and your log looks clean. I thank you too for being so informative and asking questions during a frustrating time. :)

I know you uninstalled Norton, so you HAVE to have an AV running. I run Avast! for 3 reasons. It's really good (rated in the top 10 AVs!), it's light on resources, and it's FREE! AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/), Avira (http://www.free-av.com/) OR Avast (http://www.avast.com/) are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirus scanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give you problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

You should definitely maintain a firewall. Some good free firewalls are ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?lid=dbtopnav_za), or Outpost (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/download.php)
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html).

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html).

SpywareGuard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html).

Ad-Aware SE (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware)
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial48.html).

Spybot-Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download)
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html). Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm)

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Take care!
tea
