I realized that I had disabled some things....so here is a new scan.

Besides the lack of all colors.....the system also seems to be running hard for no apparent reason. It will be quiet for a few minutes..and then it sort of revs up to full speed...it sounds like the fan is going loud...and like its working very hard....when I look at the cpu activity in taskmngr when this is happening it says that the cpu is near 100% of usage..even though Im not doing anything.

Attaching the spybot report:

Also a few other things:

1. My screen still have very few colors.....It looks as if it is always in safe mode. Still happneing.

2. Whenever I re-boot the "real-Player" update pops up...followed by the real-player itself....with "boottheplayeratstartup" (or something like that) in the players browser window.

3. I also get a "Runner error" that says.....Invalid backweb application id 8876480.

Please post a new hijackthis log

Im sorry. I posted that in error. I did have spybot fix the problems. I copied that prior to fixing..and neglected to post an updated spybot. The system is very sluggish....and it's taking a long time do do things.

Run blacklite click > scan then > next,
Have blacklite rename that file
The tool will ask if you want to reboot (restart) choose yes.
After you have rebooted run hijackthis and fix this item
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rpcc] rpcc.exe

Use the pc for a few hours and let us know of any problems.

Yes! Thanks for all your help Lonny. Big improvements. I have my colors back. And the system is running much better now.

A few things:

In the startup in msconfig I:

I disabled the "real player" start up things.....I never use the player anyway...its really annoying to have them forcing you to update etc.. I hope that does not effect anything.

I also diabled the backweb8876480 thing. It kept giving me an "runner error"....by disabling it I no longer get this error. Should we remove it by Hijack altogether?

When the system re-boots I get a screen that comes up that is called "iglass". I think it is related to a windows blind thing that my sister installed on this computer at one time. It seems like it really slows down the boot up. Is there a way to disable it? Or get rid of it?

The only other performance issue...is that it seems that every few minutes or so the system "rev's up".......the fan gets really loud like the hard drive is working hard......and it seems to stay like that for long periods of time.......after awhile it will stop.....but only for a short time and then it "revs up" again. When I watch the cpu usage it says that it using almost 100% but Im not doing anything at the time. Is something running in the background?

Thanks again for your expert advice.

Think you can get away with uninstalling windows blind's, ? atleast for a couple weeks.

renable backweb and realplayers update then uninstall both via addremove programs, backweb might be called updates from HP and might not want to uninstall, try that first though.

delete this file C:\WINDOWS\System32\rpcc.exe.ren

ok...enabled and uninstalled realplayer...and "backweb"....which was connected to my logitech mouse.

I uninstalled window blinds.....but Im still getting this "iglass" screen.....

There are 2 programs, "Winstyles Theme manager" and "Stardock Central"....which I think may be connected to this iglass thing. But when I go to uninstall them i get "could not open install.log file" and it wont let me uninstall these programs.

The only other noticeable issue is the "reving up" of the system and the near 100% cpu usage....even though Im not really doing anything.

looking a little closer at the cpu usage...it looks like the "system idle process" is what is causing the "revving up"...of the system. At least thats what it says is using the cpu as its happening.

Its normal to see "system idle process" at 90 to 99%

Usualy The best method of uninstalling programs that wont install is to install them again (to the same place).

To fix this leftover
O23 - Service: Task Manager Message Service (TSKMS) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\taskms.exe (file missing)
Go start run and type
sc delete TSKMS

Ok. My spybot log comes up clean.

I tracked down my "revving up" problem....to a very dirty fan...I'm embrassed to say. Used my garden blower on it....now quiet.

Here is my latest hijack log.

Am I cleaned up enough for Windows updates like SP2?

Thanks again for all your help. System seems to be running well.

Good you found that, might be a good idea to get a heatsink and fan and replace any others that are getting to warm.

Your log looks fine.

Yes visit windowsupdate several time always rebooting when prompted.

Post back in a few days, let us know how that PC is.

well. New Problem. I ran all the updates for SP2 from microsoft.....but NOw when I boot up....I get no icons....just my background picture.

I can boot up in safe mode....and get all the icons.....but all seems a little unstable at this point.

Uh oh.

Dont panic :)
Reboot a few times and see if your desktop is back to normal
If not > windows control panel user accounts > make a new account, then
log into that account and see if there are any problems there

Try the sharedaccess.reg file here
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/sharedaccess.htm

Once that is fixed i suggest turning off the windows built in firewall and installing a third party program, interested ?

There are several free programs mentioned here
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279

Dont install more that one firewall or antivirus program.
