Hi, everytime I turn my computer on, I get this dialog box that pops up and says:

"Automatic Updates has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

This dialog box keeps on occuring several times giving me the choice to either send an error report or not send. After about 10 times of the pop up, it stops until the next time i turn my computer on. Furthermore, the Error signature has:

"szAppName : wuauclt.exe " and "szModName : esent.dll"

Below is my hijackfile log, please help because this has been occuring for the past three weeks and it's getting annoying. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sorry about the wait, the logs are many and the volunteers are few. I don't know if I can help or not, but before I would start you need to uninstall one of the antivirus programs, running two is not a good thing.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html
Update the one you keep and run a complete system scan having it remove anything it locates. If it locates anything it can't remove, I need the exact name and pathway of that item/items.

Please use one or more of these free online scanners to tell me what this is:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SetCrSr.exe post that information for me.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Once you have completed those instructions, post a new HJT log reflecting those changes. This might be a job for Microsoft?

Thanks...pskelley

Ok, well i scanned using http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and this is what they have given me:

Hi,
I just updated my AVG AV and a dialog box immediately popped up for this trojan: SetCrSr.exe . Spybot had not detected it.
On 7.28.6 a major site had notified me of compromise of my password on 7.3.6.
My questions are: what is SetCrSr.exe and could it have stolen my password?
Thank you!
B

I can only do so much from here. The item is on your computer and it is a trojan, and there is a very good chance it can compromise your security and access your passwords. I personally would consider all passwords compromised and take the action you should to protect yourself. This is happening everyday to many, many folks. All I can do is help you remove the junk, but not until you follow the directions I have posted.
You would do well to stay offline except when troubleshooting, they have access to your computer when it is online. I fear the damage is done, but no reason to allow them to continue access.

Thanks

Thanks before we remove that item you scanned, I need information about this one:
C:\Windows\RUNXMLPL.exe Google says it may belong to this: http://www.wistron.com/
Do you know that this item is safe, here is more information:
http://www.file.net/process/runxmlpl.exe.html If you know it, let me know, if not, then use the scans and tell me what you find.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CentralCrSr] C:\WINDOWS\system32\SetCrSr.exe
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://download.games.yahoo.com/game...ploader_v6.cab
adware
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)
old SpySweeper line

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\SetCrSr.exe <<< delete that file

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with the information about C:\Windows\RUNXMLPL.exe and any comments you think will help.

Your Java program needs an update, see this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

i scanned "C:\Windows\RUNXMLPL.exe" using the online scanner and it says that there isn't anything found, so i'm guessing that it isn't harmful.

Followed all of the instructions which you have last posted, and here's my hijackfile you requested though I still receive the error messages when I restart my computer. Could this have been caused by another virus of some sort. particularly wuauclt.exe (this is in the error log). Thanks for all the help!

Thanks for returning the information. The HJT log looks good:bigthumb: I would like you to remove this one item with HJT to see if that stops the problem. Often these game ActiveX downloads look benign, but when you read the EULA you will find you have agreed to adware so they are rarely free. It is your computer, but I suggest you play online, or purchase the game free of adware.

though I still receive the error messages when I restart my computer. Could this have been caused by another virus of some sort. particularly wuauclt.exe I need to know what the exact error message is, "word for word"
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/wuauclt/ <<< see thisThis item can be a problem as hackers use the same name at times to confuse us but I have never seen that happen when it did not show in the HJT log. This may well be a valid message concerning the fact that there is an issue with Windows Updates, Which Microsoft would have to fix, and I won't know until I see what the message is.
When you ask Google to search for "error messages" it returns 239,000,000 possibles.

Your Java program still needs that update!!

Let's run a good scan and see what it picks up.

First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O16 - DPF: {7E980B9B-8AE5-466A-B6D6-DA8CF814E78A} (MJLauncherCtrl Class) - http://zone.msn.com/bingame/chnz/def...jolauncher.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Restart the computer and post the ewido scan report, a new HJT log, information I requested about the error message an any comments you think will help.

Thanks...Phil

appcompat.txt
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/desktopdeployment/appcompat/toolkit.mspx
appears this is just a list of the files used to send Microsoft the report, see the link or search Google for more information.
http://channels.lockergnome.com/it/archives/20050617_how_do_i_resolve_my_problem_with_appcompattxt.phtml

wuauclt.exe.mdmp: Others have the same issue in case you want to look to see if you can find a solution.
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-16,GGLG:en&q=wuauclt%2Eexe%2Emdmp

Suggestions:
1) Try System File Checker in case it is a missing or corrupt System File causing the issue.
Click Start > Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files

Windows File Protection
http://www.updatexp.com/windows-file-protection.html

2) Turn off AutoUpdates to see if that stops it. If it does you can be sent email letting you know when to turn on updates to download from Micrsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-jul.mspx
http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/

3) Contact Microsoft Tech Support for help:
http://support.microsoft.com/

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\ <<< needs an update, this can get you infected.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Those are hidden because the are "Protected" Windows files. That is why the hackers like to put their junk there, because many folks do not even know they exist and you would never find the hackers junk unless you unhide all of those files. In my case, no one would be going into that area, so I leave mine available all of the time. If you have anyone in the house who might access that area, they probably should not be allowed on the computer. To answer your question, you may reverse the process and hide those protected files and folder if you wish.
