View Full Version : Have some sort of infection which opens up IE in process list but not as windows

Thank you in advance for your help with this, gentlemen and ladies.

I have acquired from somewhere an infection which causes internet explorer to appear in the process list but not actually open a window. When I subsequently open IE, there are some sites listed in the history which I presume it must be going to.

If I kill the process it reopens itself. It doesn't seem to open more copies of IE, even if the machine is left on for a while.

I've tried several things already, which evidently is going to make things much harder. I know that I disabled system restore at some point, and that I have tried several malware detectors without fully succeeding. Various programs - including the MalwareBytes one and a McAfee rootkit tool - found odd things and removed them, but there is still this recurrent opening of IE. I should mention that I have also used the registry cleanup function of CCleaner.

I normally use firefox, and the initial problem was some sort of redirecting issue, which now seems to have been solved by the other actions I took. I only noticed the IE issue afterwards.
Interestingly, I noticed that a version of TDSSKiller I downloaded would not run even with a name change, and Football Manager of all things has stopped working. I'm not concerned to get it working again, just to restore security.

Here's the log:

Hi,

Please post attach.txt contents too.

Attachment as requested.

Is it safe/advisable to let McAfee run a scheduled scan? The last scan did detect and remove some bits and pieces - hence I assumed no further action was required until I noticed these IEs running in the background.

Hi,

Is it safe/advisable to let McAfee run a scheduled scan?
Don't run a scan yet.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

When running ComboFix, it told me - before it did much else - that a file was patched with a rootkit.

It was something like vol.sys, and it asked me to 'ok' the attempt to fix it, which I did.

I'm posting this on another machine as combofix is currently running. I think I managed to disable all the anti-malware and spyware stuff, and the McAfee. It rebooted the machine just now as it detected rootkit activity, which again I just okayed.

Will update with the files when the time comes.

Cheers.

Is it significant that McAfee was instructed to switch itself back on when I restarted the machine? Combofix seems to have got in first and prevented McAfee doing anything...

AndyEMcc

McAfee did something - it flashed a message about quarantining a virus - during the combofix startup scan. Combofix appears to be running as it shows in the instructions.

Sorry for all these posts, I'm not sure what's useful to you and what isn't.

when I try to run the eset scanner, it gets to the popup page and after I click start, it closes IE down altogether. I tried it a couple of times and on one of the occasions, it gave me an error message, which said that IE had prevented a web page opening. I tried to copy the page but for some reason it hasn't worked.

What next?

Hi,

Please see if there's Enable Anti-Stealth technology option available and make sure it's checked before launching the scan. Let me know if that works.

AndyEMcc
2011-02-27, 13:09
It happens when I agree to the licence (before it's ready to scan), so there's no options to check at that point. I've tried it again, and it seems to just close the IE window without warning on all but that one occasion.

It shows a window with one of those mediaplayer type icons in the top left, and then shuts both the popup and the original IE window down.

Let's see if F-Secure online scanner (http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA-Labs/security-threats/tools/online-scanner) runs:
1. Accept terms.
2. Click Run check.
3. Select Full scan option and click start button. Wait for scan to finish. If any bad items were found please select decide file by file->next->click none to clear checkboxes and then next again.
4. Click full report button. Copy-paste results back to this topic with a fresh dds.txt log.

I left the machine on while I went out and it gave this report - no malware or spyware - but then as I asked it for the report, it complained that I was running the scan without the relevant privileges (this is after it had finished). Error ID 62 or 65 (it wouldn't let me C&P).

A further question: Is it possible that this infection has somehow caused a problem for another computer on the same network?
My wife's work PC has just reported some sort of trojan, and told her to ok some sort of update, but she can't install software and what have you.

I read somewhere that there can be problems that reside in the router and attack machines from there, but I have done the whole hardware reset routine which was suggested on someone's page.

Hi,

A further question: Is it possible that this infection has somehow caused a problem for another computer on the same network?
My wife's work PC has just reported some sort of trojan, and told her to ok some sort of update, but she can't install software and what have you.
If symptoms don't go away you may open a new topic for that after we've finished working with this case.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Driver::
0265F
a6360
16161
File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\a6360.DAT
c:\windows\system32\drivers\16161.DAT
c:\windows\system32\drivers\0265F.DAT
DDS::
BHO: {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - No File

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log. How's the system running?

Do you need a new DDS log in addition to this combofix log?

In response to your question, there are no obvious signs of any infection now, it seems to run pretty smoothly. I don't see any obviously nefarious IEs in the process list, nor are there any pages in the history that I haven't manually visited.

WRT my wife's PC, I was more asking out of interest - she has a work machine that she uses at home, and I just wondered if her symptoms were likely to be as a result of the infection on mine. As it happens, her work seem to have sorted it out today.

Thanks for your help with this. Really appreciate it!

No need for that now.

It may have been a bad coincidence only.

If no other issues left, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) and fix its findings.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Can't detect any problems within windows, but there was a thing where it asked me which system I wanted to boot before choosing for me. Didn't seem to have any effects afterwards, though.

Thanks for the security recommendations, have followed them. Will repost to this thread if I notice anything in the next couple of days. Thank you for your help - it is much appreciated and gratefully received.

Andy
