View Full Version : BSOD, Automatically Reboots

Morpheus1967

Hello, and sorry to be back. In the past week or so, when I would turn on my computer after sitting overnight, I would get an error message that Windows had recovered from a serious error. Now, every once in a while, it will flash the BSOD, and automatically reboot even when on. Upon reporting the error, it says the first thing to do is scan for viruses. I do not think I have anything, but I thought it best to let the experts take a look. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Were you able to see error message on that BSOD? It might help if you had the message handy.

Blade-

The computer re-starts itself too quickly to read the BSOD. The restarts got exponentially worse yesterday, getting closer and closer together. Finally, around 8:00 last night, it would no longer load Windows normally. It would get to a certain part in loading, then BSOD and another restart. I am able to get in in safe mode. It restarted close to 15 times in the 4 hours I was home, until I finally had to just shut it off.

I do have the minidump files if you need them, but have never seen them asked for here before.

I fear it may be something internal with the computer, but I'm no expert, so that's why I am here. Did anything jump out at you from DDS? Being as this is my only computer, I went and bought a laptop last night(been wanting one anyways) and will begin transferring needed files just in case.

Hi,

DDS log looked ok.

Disable automatic restart:
1. Navigate to the Control Panel in Windows XP by left-clicking on Start, followed by Settings and then choosing Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel window, open System.

Note: In Microsoft Windows XP, depending on how your operating system is setup, you may not see the System icon. To correct this, click on the link on the left-hand side of the Control Panel window that says Switch to Classic View.

3. In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.
4. Locate the Startup and Recovery area and click on the Settings button.
5. In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.
6. Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.
7. Click OK in the System Properties window.
8. From now on, when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, the PC will not automatically reboot.

I will do that this afternoon and post back results of BSOD. Thank you.

Ok. Let's hope it brings some light into this issue :)

Morpheus1967

Well, when I went to turn on the computer last night, it loaded Windows normally. I let it run for a few hours. No BSOD, no restarts. The night before, I did remove the cover, and gave it a good cleaning with compressed air. It was pretty dirty inside. Possibly it was overheating?

At this point, I am going to say go ahead and close this thread, as you said you didn't see anything suspicious in my log. There are others with more pressing needs. I did dis-able the restart function, as you suggested. If per chance it happens again, I will then have the results of what the blue screen says, and I will open a new thread at that time.

2011-03-09, 15:21
Yes, overheating is possible reason, especially if the machine wasn't clean inside. I'll close the topic and hope that the issue won't reappear :)
