View Full Version : D drive blocking content/asking to format disc

This is quite frustrating and I'm not sure how it happened but I'm having folder/file access issues on my D (data) drive. I've just noticed recently that any attempt at opening folders is greeted with a delay and a couple of folders are now empty where they weren't just days ago. When I double click on the now empty folders, I get the following message:
"The disc in drive D is not formatted. Do you want to format?"
I'm puzzled seeing as I haven't messed with any of the partitioning or assigning drive letters, etc (I haven't a clue how that works). Also, certain actions eg, deleting certain media files, backing up data, give me the following warning: "Cannot delete renders: data error (cyclic redundancy checks."

I'd appreciate any help. Thank you.
Lefky

Here's the D drive Disk Management info:

Capacity: 189.92GB
Free Space: 36.80GB

Hi,

How old is this hard drive? Are both c: and d: drive partitions on the same physical hard drive?

The computer model is a Dell Dimension 4600, which, I think, came out around 2003. I bought it from a friend when it was fairly new and haven't made any changes to the hard drive(s), though I'm not sure if he had upgraded before giving it to me. It's odd how only a few random folders now say "Folder is Empty." Is there a way to retrieve those files or are they gone for good?

I'm not sure about the C and D drives being on the same physical hard drive. The 'Computer Management' screen lists the following:

Disc 0: Basic, 74.50GB, Online.
31MB FAT, Healthy (EISA Configuration)
(C:) 74.47GB NTFS, Healthy (System)

Disc 1: Basic, 189.92 GB, Online.
Data (D:) 189.92 GB NTFS, Healthy (Page File)

Thanks.

Hi,

There might be hard drive coming to its end. I recommend to backup all accessible, important data to separate location (usb drive for example) for just in case.

Then run disk check by following instructions here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/kbtip.mspx).

I ran the ScanDisk utility, but after it finished, I received the following message:

"Windows was unable to complete the disk check."

I reran the scan just to double check, but got the same message.

Hi,

That doesn't sound good. Could you try to run process in safe mode?

I ran the scan disck utulity in Safe Mode, but received the same message, not a good sign, I'd imagine. I'm able to get to most of my D drive files, so I'll back-up the ones I need just in case. Considering the possible outcome, I may start pricing new computers.

Hi,

Yes, better backup important stuff.

Update MBAM and run a full scan with it. Post back the report.

Here's the MBAM log file. It took an incredibly long time, nearly 19 hours. A full scan used to take around 5-6 hours, so I think it's struggling a bit now.

Hi,

All things seem to indicate hard drive issue. Better backup all necessary stuff and then reformat the partition with issues. If this is hardware problem then you probably have to replace old hard drive with a new one.

I guess I saw that one coming, oh well. Thank you for your time and effort.
