Hi,

I am looking at my girlfriend's computer which was totally infested with Spyware/Trojans etc. I have managed to remove everything except Cmd Service, which seems to be very persistant.

They are on XP SP1, but I have read several places that I need to make sure it is clean before upgrading to SP2.

This forum once helped me clean up my own computer, which I am pleased to say is still fine a year later so thanks again in advance for you help.

When I tried to submit this post it said it was two long so I shall post the log in two parts.

First Part of Log below:

Hello and welcome to the forum. This computer is very infected and I strongly suggest you keep it offline until it is clean to avoid picking up more junk. We have problems to take care of before we can work on the infection. If you are not receiving help elsewhere and still need help:

1) The 018 lines are a glitch casued by Logitech DesktopMessenger. This will explain:
For your information, all of the 018 items in the log are the result of the Logitech Desktop Messenger which gets installed along with another Logitech program because the EULA agreement is not read. Unless you know what it is and use it, it is a resource waster and can be removed in Add Remove programs, but make sure you uninstall only what I highlite in red, this is optional:
C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\ <<< uninstall only the program in red. If you will get rid of that, the log will be easier for both of us to work with.

2) This competer has two antivirus programs running at the same time, see this information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html
running: McAfee VirusScan and Grisoft AVGfree. Uninstall one of those and update the one you keep. Run a complete system scan removing anything located. If something can not be deleted or quarantined, post that information for me, I need the complete name and pathway of the item/items.

3) Since Ewido is onboard, update the program and run a complete system scan with it, remove what it finds unless you know it is not bad.

Post the ewido scan results and a new HJT log reflecting the above changes. Please add any comments you think will help. As soon as possible after I have that information I will respond with instructions.

Thanks...pskelley

Hope we are getting somewhere
Me too, you would not believe how many others are waiting for my attention:(

Lots of junk left, I am going to run through once with HJT to see what happens. This item,
O23 - Service: Win32 Smart System - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\lssvs.exe (file missing)
Looks like a trojan to me, Goggle has nothing on it. Use these free scans and post the results for me to view:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

I see this: C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Shared Components\Guardian\CMGrdian.exe, I do not know if that program is going to ibe a problem or not??
I also see McAfee Firewall, you should make sure the SP2 firewall is off if you are going to run a third party firewall.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) (Make sure C:\WINDOWS\system32\lssvs.exe was found to bad before removing it)
Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Win32 Smart System and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type Win32 Smart System and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

4) Start > Control Panel Add Remove programs and uninstall IM Names, WinAntiSpyware 2006 and any other program you know does not belong there. If you are unsure, let me know and I will look.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

(HJT will remove some of these, but it is best to search to make sure they are gone)

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SEYYINGS~1\Dan\LOCALS~1\Temp\<<< empty that Temp folder

C:\Program Files\IM Names\ <<< folder

c:\program files\winantispyware 2006 scanner\ <<< folder

xpsp2guard.exe <<< search and delete the file

wuam32s.exe <<< search and delete the file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kgdtuq.dll <<< file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lssvs.exe <<< file

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, please add any comments you think will help.

Thanks

Hi

I tried doing the online scan on C:\WINDOWS\system32\lssvs.exe but I couldn't find the file. I did a search from root and it is definitely not there.

I carried on with your instructions anyway, hope that was ok.

The Guardian thing is ok. The computer I am on is on SP1, but when it is clean and I can install SP2 I will uninstall the McAfee Firewall and use the windows one.

The Win 32 Smart System wasn't running so I didn't need to stop it but I disabled and removed it as you said.

IM Names and Win AntiSpyware were not in the Add/Remove Programs list so I couldn't uninstall them. I checked their folders in Program Files and they were both empty.

I removed the entries that you listed.

Other than the IM Names and Win AntiSpyware folders, when I searched for the files/folders you mentioned none of them were found.

I used ATF Cleaner and rebooted.

Thanks for the feedback, you can delete those emply folders if you wish, you for sure do not want anything in those. Your HJT log looks good:bigthumb: you do have programs running that you probably do not need to start every time and could be started in All Programs when needed: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
In case I did not mention it, if you keep the free ewido scanner (and I would) you need to clean out that quarantine folder.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Hi,

I have just run spybot and it is showing two entries under Command Service

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\cmdService

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cmdService

It can't fix these, even when it runs straight after a reboot.

How can I remove these?

Thanks for all your help.

Please download and unzip Ren-cmdservice to your desktop.
It will only work correctly if the folder is placed on your desktop and extracted !!.

http://downloads.subratam.org/Lon/ren-cmdservice.zip

Open the ren-cmdservice folder by doubleclicking it and then doubleclick the
ren-cmdservice.bat file to run the program.
A text will open when it is finished, Post it please.
Then restart the PC run spybot check for and fix any problems found.

Thanks

Hi,

Spybot, AVG and ewido are all telling me I have no problems, so I have tried to update this PC to XP Service Pack 2 from the Microsoft Update site.

It fails to install, after I have accepted the licence agreement but I do not get any error messages (other than ..failed).

I am wondering whether xpsp2guard.exe, which was present on the PC prevents the installation of SP2 and perhaps something is still not quite right somewhere.

I have done several searches on Microsofts Knowledge Base and the internet and can't find anything that would help me.

As I am not 100% sure whether malware is preventing it installing or there is something wrong with the XP install, I will understand if you can't help me, but if you could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for all your help.
Farmercy.

To the best of my knowledge, it has nothing to do with malware. I have two XP machines and I am running SP1 on one of them and four hours of troubleshooting with a Microsoft Technician could not resolve the issues. I will be giving it a go again before the SP1 updates quit in the first week of Octomber.

A couple of suggestions are, look at this information to see if anything helps: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

The number in US/Canada is 888-SP2-HELP Probably no help since it appears you may be in the UK.

I will try that (but not the phone number as you are right, I am in the UK).

Thanks very much for all your help.
