View Full Version : Checking Cleanliness Defender.exe

I got a nasty little infection through some sort of browser exploit called defender.exe It was a scareware/malware/extortware type deal, it closed all my open programs and refused to allow me to do anything (even opening task manager was blocked), attempting to get me to buy some removal program. Spybot and Avast! both failed to detect it, Thankfully, Comodo Firewall was able to disable/block the file from running. MBAM detected it initially, but could not remove it, and I could not take ownership of it to delete it permanently. I restarted in safe mode and deleted the file's only known location in C:/users/user/appdata/roaming. After doing this, I wanted to make sure that my PC was clean completely and I also wanted to let the folks at Spybot know that this nasty little piece of work was slipping through their scanner undetected.

Here Is my DDS log:

Hi,

If there're no symptoms it's recommended to download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) and fix its findings. That way system is better safe from drive-by attacks that occur when system isn't fully patched and enters exploited website.

For some odd reason, MBAM still detects it in the folder it was in, even though I deleted the file and can find no trace of it

Please post MBAM report.

Sorry for the delay in reply, here is the MBAM log, it says it successfully deleted the file, but if I re-run the scan it would detect it again. I did manually delete the file a while back, and I see no apparent traces of it in the suggested folder, but MBAM still detects it.

Hi

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html)
Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
