View Full Version : "windows restore" virus

I have a "windows restore" virus. It basically gives me a bunch of messages saying that there is a serious hard-drive failure. It had hidden all of my files to try to make me think they were lost, and it is virtually impossible to do anything in normal mode (task manager is also disabled).

I can only run safe mode, and it seems to work fine.
I recently chose to "view all hidden files", and now I can access all of my files.

I backed up my registry, and posted/attached the requested items.
When i generated the dds log, all of my files were hidden, so I wasn't able to open spybot and make sure that teatimer was disabled. But now I have chosen to "view all hidden files", so I have access to all of my files, but still none of my programs show when I go to "start->all programs".

Here is the DDS log:

Thanks. I ran combofix in safe mode, then I restarted, ran normal mode, and generated this new dds log. Normal mode seems to be running fine now, and there is no sign of the windows restore junk or the hard drive failure messages.

Here is the combofix log followed by the new dds log:

Hi,

Is that Symantec Antivirus license you got there still valid?

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one ((Adobe Reader X + 10.0.1 update for it)) here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows) or get Foxit Reader here (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm). Make sure you don't (unless you want to) install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here (http://pdfreaders.org/).

Uninstall vulnerable Flash versions by following instructions here (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html). Fresh version can be obtained here (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/).

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 24 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Click the
Download
button to the right.
Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.

The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u24-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version. Uncheck Carbonite online backup trial if it's offered there.

* Go here (http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner) to run an online scanner from ESET.
Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click Start
When asked, allow the activex control to install
Click Start
Make sure that the option Remove found threats is UNchecked.
Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish.

Post back its report & a fresh dds.txt log.

Hey, I may not be able to complete the current directions until tomorrow, so it may be another day before I post back.

Ok. Thanks for the heads up :)

Thanks.

Yeah, that Symantec was very old and expired. It just disabled itself a long time ago and I was never able to update/renew it, so I just let it sit there. I uninstalled it.

I think the java and flash uninstall/update went fine, but when I try to uninstall adobe, it gives me "Error 1327. Invalid Drive F:\" and won't let me uninstall it. I think I ran into the same problem a few months ago and that's why I still have that old version of adobe. I thought I should take care of this first before the scan and new dds log. What should I do?

Hi,

Please try Microsoft Fix It solution offered here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549) (Fix it for me -part). See if you're able to uninstall Adobe after that.

Thanks.

I was able to uninstall old adobe and installed the new version, so I think I have updated all of the items you asked.
Here are the results of the ESET scan and a new DDS log:

Hi,

Clear Java cache: instructions (http://www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache.xml).

Delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\kjllm.bakt file.

Do you still have those files hidden if you disable "show all hidden files" option?

Galois
2011-04-27, 23:17
I cleared the Java cache and deleted the file you asked.

I think there is still a problem with the hidden files situation. When I switch to “do NOT show hidden files”, it still shows “temporary word” files that I don’t think are normally displayed; e.g., “~WRL2830.tmp”

When I switch to “do NOT show hidden files” when browsing one particular external hard drive, it hides all of the files. This does not occur with other external hard drives. On this particular external hard drive, all files have been grayed out, but open fine with no apparent problems. But when I try to open a grayed out picture file with Microsoft Picture Manager, it won’t open, it just gives me
“Other folders exist.
The selected locations do not contain pictures to preview. Other folder or files exist but cannot be previewed.”
This grayed out problem does not occur with other external hard drives nor on the internal hard drive.

Hi,

Download this (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe) to your desktop.

Once the program has been downloaded, double-click on the Unhide.exe icon on your desktop and allow the program to run. This program will remove the +H, or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives. If there are any files that were purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run.

Galois
2011-04-28, 12:24
Thanks, I think that fixed the hidden files situation.
The external hard drive that had all of its files given the attribute of hidden now shows those files when I select “do NOT show hidden files”, so that is fixed. The grayed out problem is also gone, and I can open up picture files (that were previously grayed out) with Microsoft Picture Manager just fine now.

Good. Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

Click START then RUN
Now copy-paste Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok
Download and run Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/) and fix its findings.
Get Anti Virus Software and keep it updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Good free antivirus programs are:
Antivir (http://free-av.com/en/download/1/download_avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html)
Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)
Good commercial ones are from:
Kaspersky (http://www.kaspersky.com/homeuser) and
ESET (http://www.eset.com/products/index.php)
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
If you don't have a 3rd party firewall or a router behind NAT then I recommend getting one. I recommend either Online Armor Free (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html) or Comodo Firewall Pro (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html#fw3.0) (If you choose Comodo: Uncheck during installation Install Comodo HopSurf.., Make Comodo my default search provider and Make Comodo Search my homepage and install firewall ONLY!). Both providers have support forums that help with configuration related questions.

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,

I completed your instructions. I'm not noticing any problems. When combofix was uninstalled, I got this message:

"Combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine."

Then after the computer restarted, it finished uninstalling combofix; I'm wondering if getting that message is bad. Thanks for all of your help, it is very much appreciated.

Hi,

Better make a double check.

Download aswMBR (http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.exe) to your desktop. Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it. Click the Scan button to start scan.

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.
