View Full Version : Need Help - the Spybot program and websites have been disabled on my computer

I am experiencing the following malware issue:

1. I am undable to run or update Spybot.

2. I am undable to run or update Malwarebytes.

3. I am likewise undable to update McAfee.

4. All Spybot download or update web addresses seem to be disabled.

My first indication something was wrong was when my computer effectively froze coming out of a hibernation.

Powering down did not help as turning on the machine brought me back to the same screen as coming out of hibernation and just locked there.

In order to get booted up I had to run with the "discard restore" option under the F12 key during boot up.

I read the instructions you posted, but do not know where the DDS file is located or how to attach it??

Please send help

============= FINISH: 16:51:50.14 ===============

I was able to run spybot and malwarebytes by renaming the .exe file to .bat

This allowed me to find and eliminate the malware that was stopping me updating the definitions for McAfee, Spybot, and Malwarebytes.

Once I had updated the definitions I ran the applications from the renamed .exe to .bat and was able to eliminate the malware causing the issue with the .exe files...

Unfortunatly, every time the computer goes into hibernation mode and comes back the only way it will wake up is if I choose the eliminate the hibernation file.

When it is then rebooted the viruses are back causing the same issues.

To get rid of them I have to run McAfee, SpybotSD, and Malwarebytes in order to eliminate all the issues. This is OK, but it takes around 4 1/2 hours to do.

Please help...

Ok... Things have "progressed"

Spybot, Malwarebytes, and McAfee are all updated

The Update works on all three (or appears to)

All three on complete scans show the system is clear of malware etc.

The problem persists now, even after the scans show everything is clean, that Spybot and Malwarebytes only launch utilizing an "exe" renamed to a "bat"

The problem also persists that the computer locks up when awakening from a hibernate.

I have included below a new DDs file (DDS-01.txt)

I have attached a new "Attach" file (attach-01.zip)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

Posting additional comments or logs before a volunteer responds can push you back instead of forward, because your thread ends up with a newer date. In addition helpers would think you are already being assisted because of the post count, they look for topics with a 0 response[I]. For that reason we may merge such posts but please do not count on it.

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen. It is advisable that you back up your important data before starting any clean up procedure. Neither Safer Networking Forums nor the Analyst providing the advice may be held responsible for any loss.

Until we deem your system clean I am going to ask you not to install or uninstall any software or hardware except for the programs we may run.

Your infected with a nasty Rootkit

I am going to have you run TDSSKiller but this version of this Rootkit may prevent it from running , if so we will need to use another method

Please download TDSSKiller.zip (http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip)
Extract it to your desktop
Double click TDSSKiller.exe
Press Start Scan

Only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
Then click Continue > Reboot now

Copy and paste the log in your next reply

A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\)

As you spuspected the TDSSKiller would not run. It gets to 80% of initialization then I get the following message:

"TDSS rootkit removing tool has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I appreciate the help... what is next?

Thank You

Lee

Good Morning Lee,

Whats going on is that your Master Boot Record is infected by a Rootkit, I am going to have you run Combofix, when it starts to run it will check to see if a Recovery Console is installed and if not will ask you to install one, its important that you do so as we are going to have to fix the MBR through the Recovery Console.

Can you tell me the brand of your computer ?

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_FF.gif

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii277/sUBs_/combofix/CF_download_rename.gif

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC2-1.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

My setup is as follows:

Dell Precision M90 Laptop
Microsoft XP Professional
Service Pack 2 (from System Properties / General tab)

Dual Intel T2600 @ 2.16GHz
2.16 GHz 2.00 GB RAM

I will now go through the combo fix process as you laid out and will respond as soon as I'm done.

Thanks

Lee

Ken:

I shut off the security as you instructed... but upon rebooting it all seems to have turned itself back on...

I did leave the McAfee firewall on... should I have shut it off as well?

Also:

SpybotSD and Malwarebytes software wiil still not launch from the exe

Let me know... Thank You

Lee

Your doing fine Lee, most of those programs will reset upon boot up

This is where were at , we are going to use the Recovery Console to remove the MBR thats infected and install a new one, but being as this is a Dell, you also have a Recovery Partition , most likely D:, its used to restore your computer to factory defaults but when we repair the MBR it will remove this partition so you may want to contact Dell and order Recovery Disks for your computer unless you have them already.

Earlier on ComboFix installed the Recovery Console. We're going to use that now.

Reboot your machine and when the Boot Menu flashes up - select "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"
(you need to be very fast with the arrow key as you only have a couple of seconds before it defaults to the windows XP bootup)

http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/ss269/Cat_Byte/images/RC_BootMenu.gif

When you get to the above screen, take note of the number that references your operating system.

http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/ss269/Cat_Byte/images/RConsole_A.png

If it's '1' like the picture above, type 1 and press Enter
It will then prompt you for the Administrator's password. If there is no password, simply press enter. Otherwise type in the password and then press enter.

http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/ss269/Cat_Byte/images/RConsole_Fixmbr.png

Next type FIXMBR

http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/ss269/Cat_Byte/images/RConsole_FixmbrB.png

If it asks if you're sure you want to write a new MBR, answer 'Y'
Then type EXIT to reboot the machine.

I have the recovery CDs from Dell

My particular computer only has a "C" partition

I am now starting the recovery console...

I will post an update when the process is through.

I really appreciate all the help, Thank You.

Ken:

The process is finished... apparently successfully...

SpybotSD & malwarebytes both launch successfully..

on reboot a couple of things that may be nothing...

1. I noticed an icon for a program called "Babylon" -

start in - "C:\Documents and Settings\Lee F. Mallory\Local Settings\Application Data\Babylon\Setup\"

target - "C:\Documents and Settings\Lee F. Mallory\Local Settings\Application Data\Babylon\Setup\Setup.exe" "C:\DOCUME~1\LEEF~1.MAL\LOCALS~1\Temp\{85582451-BAB0-7891-85E9-59A25E790A44}\Setup.exe" -s -affilID=18707 -rc

I don't remember havin it before...

2. SpybotSD dialog came up

catagory: System Startup global entry
Change: Value deleted
Entry: SunJavaUpdateSched
Old data: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe

Do I want to allow change, deny change, remember decision?

Thanks Again...

ken545
2011-04-27, 22:32
I would deny the change. Babylon appears to be a translation program

Download CKScanner by askey127 from Here (http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/CKScanner.exe) & save it to your Desktop.
Doubleclick CKScanner.exe then click Search For Files
When the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File
A message box will verify the file saved
Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop then copy/paste the contents in your next reply

Lfmgtc59
2011-04-27, 22:49
I downloaed the program to the desktop. When I doubleclick it I get the message "C:\documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\CKScanner.exe is not a valid Win32 application...

Any ideas?

Thank You

Lee

Thats fine, lets do this

Open Malwarebytes, check for updates and run the Quick Scan and post the log

Lfmgtc59
2011-04-27, 22:54
I chose run instead of save and it worked... or seems to be. I'll send the txt when I get it.
