View Full Version : Unknown Outlook User

gin_jammer
2006-07-31, 12:51
I am getting almost daily e-mail messages with "Delivery Status Notification (Failure)" in the Subject line, each showing an attempt to contact a different e-mail address that is unknown to me. The destination addresses are always similar to my own in some way, and many have suffixes outside the USA. I suspect unknown malware is using my Outlook. Any suggestions?

Hello gin_jammer

Please see our 'sticky' topic:
BEFORE you post and who will advise you. Preliminary Steps (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Run the scans first.

Copy paste the HJT log here into this thread along with the results of the on-line anti-virus scan, and a helper will advise you as soon as available to do so.

Cheers.

Hello Ed, it looks like your topic got over looked. Do you still need help? If so I see this item running from services:
O23 - Service: AOL Instant Messanger (AIM) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\aim.exe (file missing
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32rbotagc.html
Turns off anti-virus applications
Allows others to access the computer
Sends itself to email addresses found on the infected computer
Modifies data on the computer
Drops more malware

When first run W32/Rbot-AGC copies itself to <Windows>\aim.exe and creates the file <System>\rdriv.sys.
The file rdriv.sys is detected by Sophos as Troj/Rootkit-W.
The file aim.exe is registered as a new system driver service named "AIM", with a display name of "AIM" and a startup type of automatic, so that it is started automatically during system startup. Registry entries are created under:

If you no longer need help, please post to let me know and I will close your topic.

Thanks...pskelley

Yes, I still need help. How do I get rid of this booger?

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to AOL Instant Messanger and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type (AIM) and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O23 - Service: AOL Instant Messanger (AIM) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\aim.exe (file missing)
(may be gone, removed by HJT)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\aim.exe <<< delete that file (may be gone, don't miss it)

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know if that takes care of the problem.

Thanks...Phil

Phil;

I followed your instructions to the letter until, under Service Status, I tried to click Stop...and could not.

Under Startup Type, I was able to change it to Disabled, and thereafter I was able to follow your instructions to the letter.

I'll have to wait a day or so to see if the mysterious Delivery Failure messages stop coming in. I'll post a message in a few days about what happens. As always, you guys are great.

Thanks for your help!

Ed

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Phil;

Yes, Toast.net has been my ISP for seveal years now.

My problem has not gone away and seems to have worsened a bit. Not only did I get three "Delivery Failure" messages today, but when I went online using Outlook, it would not Send/Receive messages. I had to Restart my computer to get Outlook to work, and then it worked very slowly, seeming to transmit as many (or more) bytes as received.

Any suggestions?

Ed

Thanks for the feedback, I have not used OE for years, and know little about it. It may be that the trojan has corrupted it and a repair or new install may be in order. Please post of post all error messages completely "word for word" so I can google them.

Download and follow the directions to run this fix: http://www.jayloden.com/aimfix.htm

Then follow the directions to download and run ewido in safe mode. Remove what it finds unless you know it is not bad.

First download ewido anti-spyware from HERE (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

You can try a repair, if there is a corrupted or missing file, System File Checker will replace it. Be sure to have the CD handy in case it is needed.

After a restart post the ewido scan results, and feedback from AimFix you can give me, a new HJT log and any other information I requested. Please add any information you think will help.

Thanks

Phil;

I've downloaded both aimfix and ewido and have them on my desktop, but now, my computer performance seems to be back to normal, and I haven't received any more "delivery failure" messages...making me suspect the last ones I received were already in the pipeline before I disabled AIM. Sooo, I think I'll just watch for a couple of days or so to see whether the messages occur any more. If so, I'll follow your last set of remedies, and if not, I'll let you know.

By the way, I'm using Outlook (part of Office) rather than Outlook Express.

Thanks,

Ed

Thanks for the feedback Ed, that is up to you. I will post this information about eiwdo, ewido is a great program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

tashi:) will close the topic in a couple of days.

Thanks...Phil
