I'm running SB S&D v 1.6.2. Each time I start the program to do a scan, I have been checking for "updates". Usually, I get a window that tells me updates (Detection Rules at least) are available, and offers numerous "mirror sites" from which to get the download. Today there was an Update Window that showed a green progress bar that very quickly flashed from left to right. At the bottom of the window, the button for "Get Updates" was grayed-out. Then, in a few seconds this whole window closed and nothing else happened -- no updates! Anyone have an idea as to what's going on here?? Thanks. :red:

Usually,if there are no new updates,a window will pop up and say No newer updates available. There was no window like that when you checked for updates?

Could you please open Spybot, click Mode,Advanced Mode, then Tools,View Report, then View Previous Report.Doubleclick the Update downloads.log, which will open in the Spybot window, and then Rightclick, select Select All,then rightclick again, select Copy, then Paste the results in a reply here. :)

Hello Again Zenobia! :)

I followed your instructions for getting the "Copy & Paste" of the Update Log File. This last part I'm not too sure of. I simply "paste" (CTL V) into this response window??

Before I do that, let me say I can see lots of download activity in the log earlier this AM (Detection Rules, Program Files, etc -- that must have been me! But,I'm still puzzled as to: 1.) Why it appeared to happened so fast (in seconds)? 2.) Why I couldn't (or didn't have to) press the "Search" button (it was grayed-out)? and 3.) Why there was no confirmation that a download occurred?

OK, here's the Log:

Hi.
Yes,pasting into the response window is right. :)

I'm mystified. It does show you downloaded the updates on the 30th.

Hi Zenobia,

Yes, I believe I did re-try for updates later in the day yesterday (1:39 - 1:41 PM) just to see if the "strange behavior" was still there -- and it was! No, there was no notification that updates were not available. Just the brief appearance of the Spybot S&D Update Window, the "flash" of the green progress bar, and the the window closed!

Just before coming to the forum today, I tried getting updates again and the same things happened: the "Get Updates" button is grayed-out; the progress bar flashes (like "something" happens); and the window closes.

The only indication I get is by going to "View Logs", and finding a record of downloading activity!! I'll "paste in" a copy of this most-recent download activity:

5/2/2011 1:29:31 PM Downloaded update info file. (http://www.safer-networking.org/updates/spybotsd.ini)

5/2/2011 1:32:08 PM Downloaded update info file. (http://www.safer-networking.org/updates/spybotsd.ini)

I also have a "screen grab" of the S&D Update Window, but the Image Insert button here seems to only accept URLs -- I only have a file-path to where I saved the "grab". Anyway suggestions?

Perhaps there is nothing amiss with my updates. I'm just uneasy with the sudden change to the process: no "mirror sites"; the apparent briefness of the downloads (they used to take several minutes!); and, most of all, no "heads up" from Spybot regarding this change!

Is there some way I can verify this updating process -- at least regarding the Detection Rules??

Thank you for "sticking" with me on this!

There are some instructions here for the screen grab:
http://forums.spybot.info/faq.php?faq=vb3_reading_posting#faq_vb3_attachments
If you could attach the screenshot, that would be great. :)

Just before coming to the forum today, I tried getting updates again and the same things happened: the "Get Updates" button is grayed-out; the progress bar flashes (like "something" happens); and the window closes.
I'm not too sure why that is happening. If there are no newer updates available, the mirror list isn't shown, but the window doesn't close on mine,I have to close it myself, and there's a window indicating that there are no newer updates available.I've attached a screenshot you can see at the bottom of my post if you like.
I don't see anything in Settings that would cause that behavior.I thought maybe if you had inadvertently set one of the mirrors as the preferred server, that might be the cause, but when I tried setting a preferred server for mine,I still either get a no newer updates available window,or the list of mirrors still pops up.

The update info file was downloaded when you checked for updates today,so it doesn't seem like there are any problems with checking for updates itself, just that the update window is acting strangely for you.
If you see those, with nothing else on that date in the logfile, usually it just means updates were checked for,and none were available.Spybot detection updates are usually available every Wednesday, and you downloaded updates on April 30th,so you should be fully up to date.
When you see things like this in the update logfile,it indicates that Updates were available, and downloaded:

4/30/2011 8:41:36 AM downloaded update Detection rules: Malware
4/30/2011 8:41:36 AM - URL: http://www.spybotupdates.com/updates...es.malware.zip

4/30/2011 8:41:44 AM downloaded update Detection rules: Supplemental
4/30/2011 8:41:44 AM - URL: http://www.spybotupdates.com/updates...pplemental.zip
4/30/2011 8:41:44 AM - Local file: C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Updates\supplemental.zip
4/30/2011 8:42:06 AM downloaded update Detection rules: Update

4/30/2011 8:42:06 AM - Local file: C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Updates\includes.zip
But,usually a window opens after you select a mirror, then you have to press the Download button.

Your update log does seem to indicate that a mirror site was selected when updates were downloaded on the 30th:

4/30/2011 8:41:36 AM - URL: http://www.spybotupdates.com/updates...es.malware.zip
That is one of the Safer Networking #1,etc. listed in the mirror list,I believe. Why you weren't shown the list of mirror sites so you could choose one yourself,I cannot fathom.

Hi (Again) Zenobia,

I just remembered there is a way to attach a file to these posts -- and my "screen grab" is saved as a file. I followed the "Attach Files" instructions under "Additional Options" for posting -- the file seemed to upload OK but, I don't see any evidence (here) that it has been "connected" to my message yet.

So, if it is attached, it shows what I get on the screen when I select either "Update" or "Search for Updates" on the SB Home Page. As I recall, in the past, I didn't get this small window at all (the "SB Updater") -- it went directly to one for selecting the "mirror site".

Zenobia
2011-05-03, 02:12
Yup,it attached fine. :)

If there are updates available to download,it ordinarily goes right to the window with the mirror sites,or the previous updater window(which you showed in your attachment) flashes by very quickly, then the mirror sites list is shown.

If there are no available updates, then the window you attached is normally shown on mine as well, but a progress bar goes by.Mine indicates there are no newer updates available, though, after it checks, and there is also a window that indicates no newer updates available, too, like it is in my attachment.

You don't have Spybot set up to autoupdate and autoclose,or anything like that,do you? It's about the only thing I can think of. :)

Koosharem

I should have checked the forum before I sent you the last post.

Your "Updater" window looks slightly different than mine -- are we running different versions (mine is v 1.6.2)??

That is one of the Safer Networking #1,etc. listed in the mirror list,I believe.

I took the "quote" above from your most recent posts-to-me, and it gave me an idea to look again at the FIRST log I sent to you. Look at the difference between the logs for 2 Apr (and before), vs the logs for 30 Apr (and after). The earlier ones show the sending URLs as: http://mirrors.gignet ... and http://www.safer-networking.org .... For 30 Apr (and after) the sending URLs are: www.safer-networking.org ... and www.spybotupdates.com ... -- no "gignet"!

This suggests, at least for MY update requests, I don't go thru a mirror site any more. Well, that's OK, and the logs do show that updates were sent/received. However, what got me started on all this -- the change in procedure (e.g., no link to mirror sites, no search-button to click on, and the
rapid-moving progress bar) -- caused me to be suspicious about the update process!

So, I guess I'll just have to get used to my "strangely acting Updater". Please let me know if you think of anything I'm missing! :thanks:

Zenobia
2011-05-03, 05:10
No,I think we have the same version. My version of Spybot is version 1.6.2.46.Could you open Spybot, click Help, then About, just to confirm that yours is the same? :)

I'm still stumped.I tried making Spybot autoupdate and autoclose, but all I got from that was a "Please select some updates from the list first" error message,so I don't think that your Spybot was configured that way.

The www.safer-networking.org ones you see in your logfile are just for the update info file. The http://mirrors.gignet ones you see in your logfile would indicate that you picked Gigenet(USA) in the mirror list.

The www.spybotupdates.com ones you see in the list would usually indicate that you chose the Safer Networking #1(Europe) mirror to download from,(except in your case, you didn't have much choice in the matter.) :D:

You can see this in my update logfile, also:
02/05/2011 11:39:53 PM - URL: http://mirrors.gigenet.com/spybot/updates/help.francais.zip <-----This is where I chose Gigenet(USA) from the mirror list.

02/05/2011 11:40:22 PM downloaded update Francais language
02/05/2011 11:40:22 PM - URL: http://www.spybotupdates.com/updates/files/lang.francais.zip <------This is where I picked Safer Networking #1(Europe) from the mirror list.

02/05/2011 11:43:39 PM downloaded update Farsi help
02/05/2011 11:43:39 PM - URL: http://www.spybotupdates.biz/updates/files/help.farsi.zip <-----This is where I picked Safer Networking #2 from the mirror list.

The detection updates should be released this Wednesday. If you don't mind, and aren't too busy, would you be able to check for updates on Wednesday, and post back here and let me know if Spybot does the same thing?
If Spybot automatically downloads from Safer Networking #1 when you check for updates,it should be fine, but then again, you never know,if you were to get a bad checksum error in the future,it would be better if you were able to pick another mirror site to download from. :)

Hi Zenobia -- Yes, there has been a long gap in my postings!! The summer has been busy for me and, SB S&D [B][I]seems[I][B] to be working. But, I still have that nagging suspicion the "Integrated Updater" is different than it used to be. I still don't get the "option" of selecting my own mirror sites for the downloads, and it all happens now in just a few seconds!

I went to the "How To" tutorial for "Updates" and got what I used to see when I selected "Search for Updates" on the program's home page (See Atch 1).

The only thing that opens now when I check for updates is a single window (as shown in Atch 2) with the "Search" button greyed-out!

I "exercised" the Updater earlier this afternoon (a couple of days since new updates were available) and got the following in the Log:

11/11/2011 12:13:23 PM Downloaded update info file. (http://www.safer-networking.org/updates/spybotsd.ini)
11/11/2011 12:13:29 PM downloaded update Detection rules: Supplemental
11/11/2011 12:13:29 PM - URL: http://mirrors.computerbild.de/updates/files/supplemental.zip
11/11/2011 12:13:29 PM - Local file: C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Updates\supplemental.zip
11/11/2011 12:13:40 PM downloaded update Detection rules: Update
11/11/2011 12:13:40 PM - URL: http://mirrors.computerbild.de/updates/files/includes.zip
11/11/2011 12:13:40 PM - Local file: C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Updates\includes.zip
11/11/2011 12:13:44 PM Downloaded update info file. (http://www.safer-networking.org/updates/spybotsd.ini)

All this downloading appears to have occurred in just 21 seconds! And the Log shows that Zip files were included! When was there time to un-zip & install them?? Does SB S&D do this automatically?? (This is what puzzles me -- in the "old days" this whole update-process would consume at least several minutes!)

A short time later, I went to the Website and did a "manual update"; and the log showed only the following:

11/11/2011 2:10:44 PM Downloaded update info file. (http://www.safer-networking.org/updates/spybotsd.ini)
11/11/2011 2:10:46 PM Downloaded update info file. (http://www.safer-networking.org/updates/spybotsd.ini)

What is in the "update info file"?? (Is this just an indication that no more recent updates are available?)

Here's hoping you can see what I'm missing -- I just want to be sure my scans are being done with the most recent program updates latest detection rules.

Zenobia

The zip files shown in the logfile are normal.Spybot handles them on it's own. :)

Let's see......I did find a post where someone else had a somewhat similar problem with updates back in 2009,and they said reinstalling Spybot seemed to fix the problem.
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=51207

Would you consider trying that?
There are uninstall instructions here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/uninstall.html
Also,if Spybot hasn't removed anything major lately, and you think it would be safe to remove the backups(quarantined files) that Spybot creates, would you also consider doing this part of the instructions as well?

Also, neither the automated uninstall nor the manual uninstall like described above will remove the following directories, which you will have to remove by hand:

Windows 95 or 98: C:\Windows\Aplication Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\
Windows ME: C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\
Windows NT, 2000 or XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\
Windows Vista: C:\ProgramData\Spybot - Search & Destroy\

(Please note that the Application Data Folder is hidden. So if you cannot find this folder please check your folder properties.)

Explanation: this folder contains the backup (the quarantined files) that Spybot-S&D creates. If the Uninstall would remove this folder as well, this would mean that those backups would be gone. We saw it a few times that new users uninstalled Spybot-S&D in panic after they have experienced a small problem, thus removing the backup that would have undone any changes.

If you do decide to uninstall/reinstall,then there is a mirror list here where you can pick a mirror to redownload Spybot:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

Please let me know how it goes. :)

Thanks for the info and ideas on what to try.

I think I will go for the "uninstall - reinstall" approach. But, first I need to solve another problem that has cropped up in doing uninstalls.

The most recent occurrence was in uninstalling Ad-Aware (using the uninstaller provided by Lavasoft!) in preparation for installing a new version. At the end of the uninstall procedure, I was prompted to re-start the system ("to complete the uninstall").

When I did the restart, Windows XP got to the point of displaying my "wallpaper graphics" and halted! No Desktop nor System Tray! Not much I could do with that! I was able to recover using Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager, and close Windows from there. Simply rebooting didn't help. 'Had to boot in Safe Mode, and use System Restore to get to an earlier configuration. This isn't something I want to do very often!!

So, it may be a while before I get back to you with any "news". In the meantime, SB S&D appears to be working successfully with this "spontaneously automated" update procedure" . . . . :euro:

Zenobia
2011-11-15, 19:39
That might have happened if explorer.exe did not start. If it happens again, when pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del,look to see if explorer.exe is listed in task manager. If it isn't,then clicking file,New task, then typing explorer.exe sometimes works,or you may get an error if explorer.exe cannot be started.
Did that happen just the one time when using the adaware uninstaller? :)

Koosharem
2011-11-15, 21:24
No, the bootup halt has occurred several times before the Ad-Aware experience.

But, thanks for your suggestion Re Explorer.exe. That was suggested on another forum also. I'll try it next time the halt happens (if I don't get a "fix" in the meantime :D:)

Zenobia
2011-11-17, 01:35
You're welcome. :)
It only happens when uninstalling programs?
Do you reboot your computer,or shut it down regularly,or do you leave it on most of the time?
Is your computer working pretty good, other than when the booting halt happens?

Koosharem
2011-11-20, 07:31
No, the "boot up - halt" doesn't occur just with uninstalls. I've had it happen when returning to normal boot after using Safe Mode, and another time, some months ago, in doing a system re-start after installing a new program!

Yes, I shut the system down and re-boot regularly -- I don't leave it running when I'm not using it.

Yes, the computer is running fine otherwise. I run MS Security Essentials as my primary anti-virus tool along with Ad-Aware Pro (before this latest boot up halt occurrence, when I re-started the system after uninstalling Ad-Aware).

Since I've been unsuccessful in finding a "cause", I'm uneasy about making [U]any[U] change to the system -- this is tough, 'cause I like to "tweek" things! ;) Oh well, perhaps your "Explorer.exe" will be a good "safety net" for me :D:

Zenobia
2011-11-20, 09:39
Yes,or at the very least,if you get an error when manually starting explorer.exe (if the bootup halt happens again),it will help to maybe find out the cause by googling the error, hopefully.Good luck with it. :)

Hi Zenobia!!

Good news! I discovered why my "getting updates" had changed and I no longer got the opportunity to choose a mirror site for the download -- and everything seemed to happen "too fast", causing me to be concerned that I wasn't getting ALL the updates (detection rules AND program updates).

I was reviewing my settings (in Advanced Mode) and found, down in "Web Update", that I had checked the first box ("Check at each program start"). I changed that to the second box ("Remind me to look"). That's all it took -- I'm back to the "familiar" pick-a-mirror-site routine!

I guess, now that I understand the "check at each program start" option does, indeed, result in getting ALL the updates, it probably is the better choice since it automates the process -- no room for forgetting! :santa:

So, thank you for sticking with me and offering suggestions.

The "boot-up-halt-at-Wallpaper" issue may still be "out there" -- 'hasn't happened recently, but I'll remember your suggestion Re explorer.exe if it does.

Best Regards

Zenobia
