View Full Version : Malware on my computer - lots of popups
Hello - There is something on my computer that is generating crazy popups. My computer has also gone dead slow and something simple as opening an application or browser takes a long time. I am unable to do this post from the infected computer and am using a different one to do it! Here is the DDS log. I have also included attach.txt as a zip file.

I followed the steps. When I clicked on 'Fix' after scanning, the console showed that the infection had been removed but at the step where it was verifying the same, the computer crashed (blue screen).
I restarted the computer and ran the scan again. This time, it did not report any infections and the 'Fix' button was grayed out. Here is the log from this run of aswMBR.

Looks like the Rootkit is gone so you should see a big difference in your computer. With a Rootkit, sometimes friends hop along for a ride so we need to run a few more scans, I am sure there will be more to remove
Please download Malwarebytes from Here (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php) or Here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html)
Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.

Download OTL (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe) to your desktop.
Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.

Great, what I would like you to do since this infection was so serious is to run Combofix, but it will not run with AVG installed, so what you need to do is uninstall AVG via Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel, run Combofix and then we will reinstall it when where done

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Hello Ken545. I am unable to uninstall AVG. It first complained about not being able to stop some services. When I manually stopped them and uninstalled, the uninstaller crashes in the middle of the process.
As a result, I am not able to run ComboFix.

Hello Ken545, Thanks for helping me with this issue. The computer seems to be back to normal - not slow anymore and no popups. I have re-installed AVG.
Is my computer clean now? Is there something else that I can install to prevent this from happening?

I would say your good to go. Cant really say how you got infected, you may have wandered into a bad site, opened an attachment in an email. Stay away from any form of file sharing , very dangerous.
Malwarebyes is the free version and yours to keep, you can upgrade to Pro and it will activate a protection moduale that will block access to known bad sites with a PAGE NOT FOUND and a warning . The cost is minamal , but this is up to you.
Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

Open OTL and click on Clean Up and it will remove programs we used to clean your system along with there backups
