View Full Version : Click.Giftload (and other malware?) becoming a real thorn in my side

Spybot has detected Click.GiftLoad and my PC is running really slow with random popups and the browser opening up random websites. I am at my wits end. This is the first time I've posted on a forum looking for help, so please be patient if I am not doing something right. Below is the DDS text that I ran tonight: Thanks so much for your help!

While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen. It is advisable that you back up your important data before starting any clean up procedure. Neither Safer Networking Forums nor the Analyst providing the advice may be held responsible for any loss.

Until we deem your system clean I am going to ask you not to install or uninstall any software or hardware except for the programs we may run.

Besides Click.Giftload your also infected with a nasty Rootkit

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\featurecontrol\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION]

Copy the entire contents inside the Quote box and Paste it into Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad ) name the file Regfix.reg and in the drop down box, save it as All Files. Save it to your desktop. Then Rightclick on the Regfix.reg file and click on Merge, when it asks you to merge with the Registry, say yes.

If you saved the file correctly it should look like this http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/reg.jpg

Download aswMBR.exe (http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.exe) ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan

Good Morning

Disable your Antivirus program by right clicking on it in the system tray and select disable.

Please download DeFogger (http://www.jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/Defogger.exe) to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.

The application window will appear
Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
Click Yes to continue
A 'Finished!' message will appear
Click OK
DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK

IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Re-Run aswMBR

Click Scan

On completion of the scan

Click Fix

Dan - I ran the defogger and got the 'finished!' message. However, it did not ask me to reboot. I did however reboot manually (should I have done that?). When the desktop came back up after the reboot, I noticed the defogger_disable log. Below are the contents. I have not yet re-run aswMBR. I will wait for your next instructions before doing anything. Thanks!

Go ahead and run aswMBR, open it, run a scan then click on the Fix button.

DO NOT CLICK ON FIXMBR

jeff524
2011-05-13, 19:22
ken - I ran aswMBR this morning and I clicked the 'fix' button as you suggested. It appeared to be doing something, but then my desktop locked up. Not completely, but all I could do is move the cursor. It wouldn't respond when trying to move the windows or clicking anything else.

After about 15 minutes in this 'locked up' situation, I regrettably had to turn off the PC and go to work. Before I left for work, I booted up the PC to make sure it started up 'normally' and it looks like it did. I then did a normal shut down of the PC.

I am still at work now, but unless you suggest otherwise, I plan to try and run the aswMBR, run the scan and click fix when I get home.

How long should it typically take for the aswMBR Fix process to run?

thanks

I dont think you need to run it again, do this, run DDS and post a new log and then run TDSSKiller and post that log

Please download TDSSKiller.zip (http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip)
Extract it to your desktop
Double click TDSSKiller.exe
Press Start Scan

Only if Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
Then click Continue > Reboot now

Copy and paste the log in your next reply

A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\)

The Rootkit is gone , but sometimes friends of these guys hop along for a ride

I need you to run Combofix, BUT AVG will prevent it from running, so go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall AVG, we will reinstall it a bit later

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v706/ried7/RC2-1.png

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Great! No rootkit!
However, I am running into a problem with combofix and AVG. I went to add/remove programs and uninstalled AVG. I then downloaded combofix and started to run it. Then I got a message that says combofix cant run with AVG.

Couple things:
1) The AVG icon is still in my system tray
2) when I go to add/remove programs again, AVG is still there, I click remove and I get a message that says something like, you can't uninstall AVG, its already uninstalled.

Is there a secret trick to uninstalling AVG 2011?

thanks

Hi

You have Ask Toolbar installed, not recommended

* It promotes its toolbars on sites targeted at kids.
* It promotes its toolbars through ads that appear to be part of other companies' sites.
* It promotes its toolbars through other companies' spyware.
* It is Installed without any disclosure whatsoever and without any consent from the user whatsoever.
* It solicits installations via "deceptive door openers" that do not accurately describe the offer; failing to affirmatively show a license agreement; linking to a EULA via an off-screen link.
* It makes confusing changes to user's browsers - increasing Ask's revenues while taking users to pages they didn't intend to visit.

There is no uninstall so if you want to remove it do this, but if you like it and want to keep it that ignore these instructions

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Open Notepad Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories> Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad )and copy all the text inside the Codebox by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above Registry::

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]
"{3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98}"=-
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{4b1c1e16-6b34-430e-b074-5928eca4c150}]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\Webbrowser]
"{3041D03E-FD4B-44E0-B742-2D9B88305F98}"=-

Driver::
ASKService

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/CFScriptB-4.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

So far, so good! It appears to be running very smoothly and I think all the bad stuff is gone..

I take it the scan file shows the same?

Yep, looks good

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /uninstallin the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

Everything seems to be running great. Thanks so much for your assistance in getting this fix. I was able to uninstall combofix per your instructions.

However, I am not understanding your comment

Open OTL and click on Clean Up and it will remove programs we used to clean your system along with there backups.

What's OTL? Thanks!

Oppss, sorry, I thought we used that tool, you can do this instead

Now to remove most of the tools that we have used in fixing your machine:
Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
Download OTC (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTC.exe) to your desktop and run it
A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTC to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
Click Yes to begin the cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

I downloaded OTC and ran it. OTC ran and a clean up file window popped up. I never saw a list of programs and my firewall/protection did not give me a message that it was trying to block anything. It asked me to reboot and it did. When the desktop came up, the only thing that was removed was OTC itself. The desktop still has multiple icons including aswMBR, erunt and multiple attachments. Should I just delete these to the recycle bin or should I try another method?

Thanks!
