Dell Latitude E6400, College Laptop
Was home two weeks ago.
Windows slow, disk drive not shown in Device Manager or Admin tools.
SpyBot S&D reports and claims to remove Click.GiftLoad (just like others)
McAfee Enterpise not detecting
TDSSKiller won't run (fails at 80%)
GMER hangs
No success and daughter returns to college, 2 days later computer is shut down as unusable. Fast Forward to today.
9AM Boot to normal mode, and run SpyBot S&D while McAfee On-Access runnning.
McAfee definitions and Spybot's definition were updated first.
McAfee reports trojans, etc., while Spybot scanning.
Task manager is open and about five minutes into session a svchost.exe process jack up to 50%, and McAfee starts reporting trojans. Spybot slows to crawl. I'm forced to kill svchost.exe process and stop Spybot which has already reported Click.GiftLoad. Spybot removes registry entry and McAfee removes some TDSS.d!mem trojans... Computer is shut off

6PM - boot into SAFE mode.
Spybot S&D finds nothing on full scan
McAfee fins a couple Trojans in restore points
Microsoft Safety Scanner, no problems
MBAM finds no problems.
Task manager shows no rogue svchost.exe.....
Nervous about booting in Normal mode.. so here is my DDS log and MBAM log.
It might have been removed, what next?

Please read Before You Post (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen. It is advisable that you back up your important data before starting any clean up procedure. Neither Safer Networking Forums nor the Analyst providing the advice may be held responsible for any loss.

Until we deem your system clean I am going to ask you not to install or uninstall any software or hardware except for the programs we may run.

Sorry for the confusion, if you still need help than run DDS and post a new log please

Hi

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\featurecontrol\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION]
"svchost.exe"=-

Copy the entire contents inside the Quote box and Paste it into Notepad ( this will only work with Notepad ) name the file Regfix.reg and in the drop down box, save it as All Files. Save it to your desktop. Then Rightclick on the Regfix.reg file and click on Merge, when it asks you to merge with the Registry, say yes.

If you saved the file correctly it should look like this http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c30/ken545/reg.jpg

Then post a new DDS log please

Let me start by saying thanks for your help.
This was college laptop and need was critical, so I had to move forward (at my own risk). So let me update before I perform your last instruction.
As mentioned, I think McAfee Enterprise actually removed a rootkit that it detected while Spybot S&D was scanning....McAfee actually told me to re-boot and run scan after detection.
Here is what was done after above (and I will post logs)
Step A - Ran SpyBot S&D (SAFE Mode), nothing found
Step B - Ran McAfee Enterprise OnDemand (SAFE Mode), found 3 viruses in Restore Points
Step C - Ran Microsoft Safety Scanner (SAFE mode), no problems found
Step D - Ran MBAM (SAFE mode), no problems found
Step E - Ran DDS
Step F - Ran aswMBR (SAFE mode), didn't report rootkit
Step G - Ran DDS
Step H - Ran ComboFix (SAFE mode), ran to completion and re-booted.
Step I - Ran MBAM (SAFE mode), no problems

Finally, forgot to F8 and booted to Normal Mode on ComboFix reboot, but log file was created and everything appears happy, but I need an expert to help me make sure everything is good and clean.

Looks fine, how is your system behaving now, any redirects or unwanted pop up windows ?

Thank you for reviewing all those log files. It is greatly appreciated.
Ran in Normal Mode for a couple hours last night while monitoring task manager.
Can see disk drive in Device Manager and partitions in Computer Management.
No svchost.exe runaway.
Logins and logouts relatively fast and no IE redirects (but didn't surf much).
Have been reluctant to do much until logs were reviewed and clean-up completed.

BTW, here is the log from when McAfee found the problem.

McAfee may have just removed parts of that rootkit, it may not have fully installed. What it also found where files in Quarantine in Spybot. Open up Spybot and go to the recovery folder and remove it all.

ESET Online Scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
ESET OnlineScan (http://eset.com/onlinescan)
Click the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetOnline.png button.
For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
Click on http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetSmartInstall.png to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
Double click on the http://billy-oneal.com/Canned%20Speeches/speechimages/eset/esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png icon on your desktop.

Need some advice on clean-up
(a) Should I run ATF Cleaner or OTL??, specifically concerned about all the temp folders floating around....
(b) Will uninstall ComboFix (combofix.exe /uninstall)
(c) Should I create fresh version and clean out XP Restore Points?

ken545
2011-05-17, 18:55
Sorry, at work with very limited internet access and didn't want to leave you hanging

ATF Cleaner is free and yours to keep, Malwarebytes is the free version also

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Click START then RUN
Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

System Restore is a component of Microsoft's Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems that allows for the rolling back of system files, registry keys, installed programs, etc., to a previous state in the event of malfunctioning or failure. Old restore points can be a source of re-infection.

Please follow the steps below to create a clean restore point:

Click Start > Run > copy and paste the following into the run box:

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next.
Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create.
When the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Then remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start > Run > copy and paste the following into the run box:

cleanmgr
Choose to scan drive C:\ (if C:\ is your main drive).
At the top, click on More Options tab. Click the Clean up... button in the System Restore box.
Click on the Yes button.
When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Need anything else please post back

Excellent, I will perform clean-up this evening (9PM EST).
Really want to make sure I've cleaned out all the nooks and crannies.

One more question (answer at your leisure). This is Dell Laptop with a Diagnostics partition, one thing I originally noticed was that I was unable to boot to diags (first thought hard disk was going bad). Would like to try again to see if MBR was fixed by McAfee or others... Any chance I could reinfect by booting Dell's Diagnostic partition.....

I doubt that partition is infected. If you need help with this post here in this windows forum and they can guide you through running it

Let me know how it went

ATF Cleaner ran fine.
ComboFix uninstall ran fine.
Cleaned up XP System Restore.
PC appears happy.
Oh.. and Dell Diagnostics partition now boots thru the F12 key (chose Diagnostics), so MBR must be okay.
Thanks again for all your help.

But, one more question: I have 4G USB thumb drive and 500G external USB hard drive. What is the best way to scan these devices for trouble???
