View Full Version : Toolbars, popups, Qoologic.bj seem gone, but...
POST-edit: And a few popups just came up, as I was about to post this, so it looks like I didn't get it all after all :(
========================
A few days ago, while practicing unsafe net, I picked up something nasty. I can specify where and when, if it matters - it was from an ad on a previously-friendly site, and I had turned off TeaTimer, ZoneAlarm, etc.
That installed several toolbars, "internet optimizer," Qoologic.bj, and some similar junk. I was able to remove most of it between SpyBot, AdAware, ewido, and a few others. The last remaining popups were the hardest to eradicate, but they seem gone now.
But... I'm in a somewhat odd situation. Due to stability issues which I think are unrelated to Malware, I'm not able to start in SafeMode (BSOD every time). (Yeah, I'll be reformatting and/or buying a new box, when the money's there...). This might be related: I had previously noticed TeaTimer.exe taking significant chunks of RAM and/or CPU cycles, as well.
All that said, I'd really like know whether I got it all, and whether there's anything else lurking in my registry. I really appreciate your help - thanks!
HJT log follows; other progam logs are on hand, if they'd be helpful.

Hi
Why dont i see an active antivirus program ?
Scan and fix this item with Hijackthis
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe,hgowsdj.exe
==========
O23 - Service: Windows Time (W32Time) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\W32Time.exe (file missing)
Are you comfortable working with the registry ?
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2005-032311-2503-99&tabid=3
Thank you for your help!
I ran HJT and fixed "F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe,hgowsdj.exe"
Yesterday, I had removed C:\WINNT\system32\W32Time.exe with msconfig, and it no longer shows up in HJT.
I am fairly comfortable working in the registry, given specific instructions. I don't generally run realtime anti-virus software on my box; instead, I scan all downloads separately, and I periodically run a general system scan, as well as keeping general malware blocking live.
What should I do regarding the Backdoor.Fuwudoor information from the Symantec site? Would it be possible to do if SafeMode is inaccessible?
(I'm only on this site and the Symantec page, and Protowall is blocking repeated packets trying to be sent to Omniture[BargainBuddy], w/ IP 216.52.17.225 . )
Current HJT log:

Are any of the files mentioned present on your system ?
"%Windir%\system32\ntms.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\w32t.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\lmhosts.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\netlogin.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\dmsrv.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\kdc.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\trks.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\trkw.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\browsvr.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\appmgmt.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\ipsec.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\mesg.dll"
"%Windir%\system32\protstrg.dll"
%windir%\system32\Drivers\usb2.sys"
Are any of the registry entries present mentioned on the symantec page
"I periodically run a general system scan,"
What does that mean ?
Please install, update and leave running atleast a free antivirus program
there are three mentioned here, never install more than one av or firewall
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279
None of the files mentioned were present in c:\winnt\system32 (or system32\drivers).
Checking the registry, there were no exact matches to the dlls mentioned by Symantec.
In some cases, the key off of Services did not exist (e.g. there was no Services\W32Time dir); in some, the key existed, but the Parameters subkey did not; in some, all keys existed, but no reference was made to the dll. I'm assuming this is standard behavior, and that these dlls are trying to hide themselves in normally benign locations?
re:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ntmssvc\Parameters
"ServiceDll" = "%Windir%\system32\ntms.dll"
This was not present; however
"ServiceDll" = "%SystemRoot%\System32\NtmsSvc.dll"
was there. Again, I expect this is normal?
By "I periodically run a general system scan," I meant that while I did not keep real-time virus protection running, I frequently use an online scanner, such as Panda ActiveScan.
Taking your advice, I've installed AVG (it may be worth noting that the link in the original thread does not appear to be active; I downloaded AVG from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-free ).
After installing and updating, AVG reported no problems.
Protowall is still blocking some attempted BargainBuddy links; I believe that is just from ads on the Symantec site.
I will post a new HJT log in a separate post.
Again, I really appreciate your help.

Periodic onlines scans in addition to having a full time antivirus program is a must if you connect to the internet, period.
Glad you installed avg
Im not familur enough with protowall, but i dont believe there are adds at Symantec's site
"ServiceDll" = "%SystemRoot%\System32\NtmsSvc.dll"
was there. Again, I expect this is normal?
Yes Normal
Your Adobe Acrobat 5.0 should be updated
Update suns java manualy
Sun Java "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 7" is Available:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Afterwards it's important to uninstall the old version's via addremove programs.
Updated Java and Acrobat Reader.
If there are no ads on the Symantec site, I wonder why I'm trying to send packets to BargainBuddy. Could that be indicative of some kind of malware?
Protowall just blocks send/receive from blacklisted IPs - mostly ad sites, with some spyware types as well.
I notice that certain webpages cause significant processor usage - for example, just idling at at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html , CPU usage goes up to 70-90%, mostly from iexplore, with the rest from the misc blockers (teatimer, etc). Irritating - but is this problematic?
Newest hjt log, and again - thanks :

Due to stability issues which I think are unrelated to Malware, I'm not able to start in SafeMode (BSOD every time).
Possibly a problem with your video card, update it if there is one avaiable.
Download and run Silentrunners.Vbs post the log it creates please
http://www.silentrunners.org/sr_scriptuse.html click no to not skip the suplimentry searchs
Wait until there is a All Done message !!, Then open and post the log next to it.
Your antivirus script protection might interfear or alert, please allow it to run after a bit box will say done.
Have you checked for rootkits ?
Post a report from this tool if any FILES show
F-Secure Blacklight: https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Click the i accept button near the bottom of that page.
Download and run blacklite click > scan then > next, next again then exit
there will be a new txt near blacklite. post it please.
Important: If any files show Do not rename them YET.....legitimate files can be listed.
Have not updated video drivers lately... will check that out soon.

Theres no need to.
Hows the PC doing now ?
It seems to be doing well, as best I can tell.
With all of the programs now running in the background (zonealarm, avg, spywareguard, ewido, spybot resident, protowall), I get some spikes of CPU usage that border on unacceptable; I'll probably play some and see which of those I can do without.
Other than simply parsing HJT logs and the like, are there any other ways of determining how safe/clean my box currently is? That is, something like the checks at auditmypc.com ; or turning off the protective software and looking for popups ; etc ?
Thanks!

Everything looks clean for the most part; however, a Pandasoftware.com activescan reported...
Adware:adware/dyfuca
Spyware:spyware/media-motor
Adware:adware/webhancer
...all in the registry.
Also, one websites that I visit ( http://www.ecipublic.org )is getting flagged as Hijack-Spy by proto-wall (which is just a blacklist of IP addresses); I get the impression that it's a false positive, but I figured it'd pay to check. Proto-wall's exact message is "Packet to Everyones Internet, www.neededware.com, roings.com [Hijack-Spy]" 67.15.16.51 blocked."
So... here's my current HJT log:

Im not familur enough with proto wall to have a comment
without a more comprehensive report that what the panda online shows i cannot make any suggestions.
You could try an online that might offer to actualy fix that, try housecall/bitdefender or Computer Associates. but unless theres a problem i wouldnt worry about it.
I think your good to go.
