Hope someone can help!

Problem started when we tried to open an existing Word doc (Word 2007) and received information that Word was attempting to repair itself when accessing existing files. It was allowed to repair itself all night with no positive results. Execution was aborted and when restarted we were asked if we wanted to restart in ‘Safe’ mode. Have attempted both with ‘Safe’ and responding 'NO'. Safe mode brings up Word and permitting normal creation of doc, while ‘no’ places us back in mode to repair itself. Trying to print on same HP printer in all circumstances. Suspecting a possible virus I downloaded Malware’s free version and ran it. On initial run, found 2 copies of PUM and took care of it. Then repeated process identified below without success, so Malware was run again. This time it identified 2 distinct copies of Trojan viruses and deleted those. Repeated process below again without success and ran Malware and 3rd time. The 3rd time it identified 2 copies of a virus that attached itself to documents. Tried again and again no success. It was recommended by a friend that I submit my problem to this blog for help.

Everything works fine if Excel or PowerPoint are used, problem is only with Word.

Each step below was attempted prior to each time one of the errors was found.

Process used when trying to resolve problem.
1. Would create a new document and then try and access it. The new document would never open.
2. Would remove printer and then install again and try to print - no success
3. Removed printer via the “Add/Remove” software option within Control Panel and then download latest driver from HP Internet site - no success
4. Would remove print driver as in #3 and then remove MS Office the same way and then reinstall MS Office 1st and try to write to a dummy printer - no success. Then loaded print driver back down from Internet and tried printing an existing file again - no success.

Hello Larry31,

Please list any all security programs you have running and your operating system. :)

Best regards.

Norton Security was on at highest level, meaning security was on at Internet only and nothing else. Appears as though subscription had expired. OS is XP.

Hi Larry31,

Appears as though subscription had expired. OS is XP.
Might be best if someone takes a look at the system, you can start a topic in the Malware Removal Forum (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22) and a volunteer analyst will advise when available. :)

First see that forum's FAQ which also includes instructions in post #2 on how to provide a preliminary DDS log, which is used for analysis.
"BEFORE you POST"(READ this Procedure BEFORE Requesting Assistance) (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

If the DDS won't run please start a new topic there anyway and make a note of the issue.

Best regards.
